About Breck and Mary Montague
I started coming to the Vineyard from Virginia as a small child in the 1950's. We are now a multi generational Vineyard summer family and know the Island intimately. We come with our children and grand child every year.
Breck and Mary Montague purchased this House in 1962
Why Breck and Mary Montague chose West Tisbury
The land was given to my Mother by an old Island friend in the end of her field on Lmbert's Cove Road. The original house was built by my parents in the early 1960's and we have added and improved it over the years.
What makes this House unique
Away from the crowds and hustle of the towns, the location is quiet and peaceful. The view from the screened porch down into the dell is lovely. The beach is truly a 5 minute walk away. When you are done the outdoor shower is refreshing. The Vineyard has exceptional conservation properties that are available to the public for hiking or beach access. There is excellent public transportation and bike paths extend to most of the island.

Wonderful house close to a terrific beach!
This a wonderful home for a vacation at Martha's Vineyard. It is very comfortable with a screened in porch and upper deck and well appointed bedrooms and living room. My family, including 5 adults, and one 8 month old, all loved the house. Its proximity to Lambert's Cove Beach meant easy frequent trips to a truly great beach. As others have stated, this up island house is convenient to Vineyard Haven, Edgartown and the other island towns and beaches. We would definitely stay here again.
Comfortable, well located property that feelhome
This is a great property to base your stay in Martha's Vineyard ! Far enough away from the traffic and clutter of Edgartown ( but easily accessible to the great waves at South Beach ) and a convenient drive to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. Close by to well- stocked grocery and specialty stores and a shorter drive to the west end ( Chilmark and Menemsha) of the Island. A VERY short walk through the sand dunes to Lambert's Cove Beach -New York Times' rated one of the best beaches in Cape Cod ( in an article by a dedicated swimmer - for its calm waters, a week after we got home from vacation !) and close to two great ponds , one for young children (Seth's Pond) that is one big warm wading pool and one deep and serene that only the "locals" know about ( Old House Pond) - for the big kids and grown ups to enjoy an exercising swim or just float around in silence....The property is spacious , the house quaint and well- appointed - convenient for two families with children - my 4 year old grandson called the yard " his meadow" and spent time in the sandbox, the blow up pool , the triple hammock and the swing hanging from a large tree branch....the eight month old had a great time as well...the owners were great to deal with and kept in touch with helpful advice before the trip. A great intro to MV and a laid back vacation in all respects ! Harold G
Truly a Home Away From Home!!
My family and I converged upon this perfect Home Away From Home to celebrate our mother's 70th birthday. Our experience was exceptional...the location is perfect, the setting is lovely and the owners felt like family with the gracious and nurturing way they looked out for us. My 2 year old nephew keeps asking when he can go back to Granny and Auntie's house at the beach (if only!). This home in Lambert's Cove provided a wonderful, family-friendly place for us to enjoy each other and to create priceless memories. We are so grateful for our time there, and hope to return!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Mary & Breck!!
Musty and Mold
While the pictures paint a bucolic image of what could be a lovely home, the overwhelming smell of mold and mildew will make inhabiting this rental very difficult. If you have allergies or asthma, this is not the rental for you. Though we aired the home out for a week, plus, the smell did not dissipate. There is mold on the bathroom ledge, and mold on some of the matting inside picture frames. There is not much seating in the living area or the screened-in porch, and the quality of the furniture is poor. On the plus side, it is a well located home, walkable to Lambert's Cove Beach and easy access to grocery stores, etc. These are definitely plusses.
We take all guest comments seriously. We are proud of our family home on Martha's Vineyard and have a fifty year record of sharing it successfully with family, friends and tenants. We object in the strongest possible terms about these guests' characterization of our property. In fifty years of renting, the last ten with the same professional cleaning service, we have not once had complaints of the nature they are putting forward (including a long-time and frequent tenant who herself has asthma). The house is rented every summer, including 2013, with very happy tenants (save this one). We also occupy the house ourselves a portion of every summer. No one has ever said there is a smell of "mold and mildew" in our house. There is no mold on the surfaces in this house; being an island house, it is possible mildew might have developed on a bathroom window sill, an item easily addressed by our cleaning staff. The seating in the living room w/fireplace is as follows: a three-four person sofa, purchased new on-island in 2011, an upholstered lolling armchair, two "occasional" wooden arm chairs and a wicker fireplace stool. The porch has a wicker sofa and two wicker chairs, as well as two antique "ice cream parlor" chairs, a ladderback rocking chair and a full picnic table with benches. These guests did not register their complaint with us while in residence; rather, we did not hear from them until a week after their departure (we have been in e.mail contact with each other since then). Please note, prospective tenants are welcome to visit the house before renting, and we are always immediately available by telephone to our tenants. We object to this characterization of our property, and wish we might have been able to satisfy these tenants.
A wonderful getaway - comfortable and convenient
We had a fantastic visit to this house. It was comfortably appointed, convenient to Vineyard Haven and up island and provided a relaxing atmosphere. Whether relaxing on the screen porch, sitting on the upper deck, lounging in the hammock, or heading to the wonderful Lambert's Cove beach, we were relaxed and happy. The owners were very accommodating, responsive and gracious. The house was clean and well maintained. The owners provided lots of brochures and clear, comprehensive notes about things to do on the island. We enjoyed grilling out on the lawn and eating on the screen porch. There was information about local venues for purchasing fresh sea food and produce.
The layout of the house is perfect for families. The upstairs suite can be a private space for parents or older children. All the rooms were very comfortable, particularly the beds!
We loved our visit to the cottage! We would recommend it to anyone looking for a great getaway with family and friends.
Wonderful family vacation to this lovely home
We had a wonderful family vacation here at this house! With 6 adults we each had our own space and enough room to feel comfortable. The house and lawn were well taken care of, and we founded everything we needed provided by Mary and Breck, the owners. The kitchen was stocked with all the pans/dishes that we needed to cook our big meals. We spent our evenings out on the porch having dinner with candle lights and often cooking on the grill. The nights were spent with walks to the beach, and cards and wine at the table. The breeze throughout the house with the windows open was perfect to make us all comfortable during the night. There were many books on Martha's Vineyard and novels provided for anyone looking to snuggle in to the couch and read about the island.
We all took turns taking naps out in the hammock during the week as the weather was beautiful. The walk to the beach is close enough that we walked to and from multiple times a day without difficulty and while feeling safe. The owners were very easy to get in touch with when checking in, made themselves available to us with their cell phone numbers at any time, and made our experience a wonderful family vacation.
Located Up-Island off Lambert's Cove Road 1/10th mile from the Lambert's Cove Beach parking area. A quiet country setting, yet within a mile of a family-owned supermarket, drug store, bank and post office. Being 'up-Island' the location is away from the crowds and hustle and bussle of the Island's 3 major towns.
