About George Gay

As a family of four children, we inherited our Island home from our parents who inherited it from their parents. We have mainained this classic Vineyard spot as a connection to our past and as a legacy for our future. John sells wine. Trina is a landscape architect. Sarah resides in New Mexico, and George is an environmental lawyer.

George Gay purchased this house in 1959

Why George Gay chose West Tisbury

We love West Tisbury. It is an Island location with a rural, agricultural feel. We are close to Vineyard Haven and just a short drive to Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. We can easily get to some fantastic Island restaurants or prepare meals on the back lawn.

What makes this house unique

Our house is walking distance to the farmer's market, Alley's General Store with direct access to all the wonderful bike trails on the Island. It is close to aLambert's Cove and Manemsha. You can easily line up a private access pass to Lambert's. Yet, it is not in the midst of the Island's mid-summer bustle. It has a remote secluded feel. The back lawn is private, beautiful, and affords sweeping Up-Island views.

The back side of our house is where we spend most of our time when we aren't out and about at the beach or in town. It is a great place to hang out. Near the house we serve cocktails, grill, and relax. The lawn rolls away from the house toward our private meadows. Here we play croquet, wiffleball, soccer, and frsibee. The view is classic Up-Island. Vistas of rolling meadows and forest.

Wonderful experience at West Tisbury home with great host, George Gay.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the authentic and rustic former stable/barn that was full of charm and on a beautiful property. We really appreciated the communication between us and George before, during and after the use of his home. The home in West Tisbury was an easy drive or bike ride to anywhere on the island. We were visited daily by a flock of turkeys that just meandered through taking their time. The home was well supplied and the large rear yard was well used by our dog Bear. We took advantage of great weather and the supplied beach chairs and spent time at several beaches with Lambert's Cove Beach being close and our favorite. Thanks George for a wonderful stay at your home. Hope to return soon.

Definitely will return

  • 5 of 5

We recently visited this wonderful Vineyard home. It was perfect. Centrally located. Very quiet , Nature surrounding us, wild turkeys in yard, just absolutely beautiful. Everything we needed for our vacation. Being so close to Alley's was perfect for our son. The house has so much charm. I would spend each morning watching the sunrise in the window bench in the living room. We will definitely return!

Great Vineyard Home Base

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a great trip to Martha's Vineyard this year, and it was due to George and this house! I can't imagine a better home base for exploring the island. West Tisbury is right in the center of the island, and with a car (or two for a big family - there's two parking spots), the house is a perfect launch pad for all the classic Vineyard destinations - obviously Edgartown and Oak Bluffs as well as the less traveled "up-island" destinations of Menemsha and Chilmark.

George pointed us towards Lambert's Cove, a private beach reserved for those staying in West Tisbury, and it was spectacular. Great place to play kadima and spikeball as it wasn't ever overcrowded like the public beaches. Another highlight for us was the proximity to the Vineyard's State Forest, which is accessible right next to the house. We enjoyed a really long run there. It was a great way to enjoy the Vineyard in a less touristy way.

The house itself is really comfortable. It's a functional older family home that had everything we needed to enjoy our vacation - kitchen, grill, outdoor shower, washer/dryer, and plenty of space inside (many bedrooms and bathrooms!). We were there mainly to explore the Vineyard, but I think this would be a great place to entertain friends or a big family - especially outside as the backyard is huge! Our visit was a great trip and a great experience on MV. We will definitely look to stay here again in the future.

An Island Home

  • 5 of 5

Staying at this house was like a homecoming for this family of long-time summer Vineyarders. The location far from the tourist centers but on a paved road was just right as access to stores, beaches, and family events was very easy. The comfortable house accommodated three generations easily. The grandchildren loved the yard and the private second floor space behind the stair. The adults loved the living room, the view from the dining room, and the sitting area and picnic table outside. The beds were comfortable. The dog was as happy as could be. We hope to go again.

Fun with Family and Friends

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided on short notice to vacation on MV. We fortunately ran across this property and rented from George who was helpful, honest and very knowledgeable of MV. We stayed 10 days and the property was perfectly located in the center of the island and a few miles to everything. It was furnished with everything we needed and provided space for all the family and friends to enjoy themselves. The backyard was huge and perfect for cookouts and clam boils. Lambert's Cove beach is awesome and great for walking the dogs in the morning. Plenty of local dining spots close to the house but without the crowds and traffic. We truly enjoyed ourselves and would stay again. The best part was that my rent security deposit refund check was already at my house in South Carolina before I got home. I was surprised and states volumes of the owners character, Thank you George!

Comfortable family home

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a lovely vacation at this comfortable and charming home! The island was busy for July 4th- this house was close enough to the action (fireworks, parades, ice cream!) to be convenient, but far enough to still be quiet when we needed a break. Walking distance to farmers market, playground, delicious bakery/sandwich shop, general store, galleries. Short drive to beaches, hikes, restaurants, etc. Excellent location! We were four adults, three kids, one baby, and one 40 lb dog and all felt very comfortable. Plenty of sleeping, playing, lounging, and eating space for us all. The house sits close to the road in front, but the large yard in the back feels very private and is perfect for kids and dogs. Clearly an old family home, which is part of the charm, but not lacking in modern amenities (well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, plenty of bathrooms, etc) and we were able to easily find everything we needed. George was a VERY helpful and attentive host. Highly recommend! Thank you!
