One of our favorite winter traditions is cutting down our Christmas tree at one of the beautiful tree farms near Boulder Creek.

Our house: We first saw our house in the winter rains and were instantly charmed. It is a cozy retreat in the redwoods, and it has been lovingly maintained and decorated for our family and friends' use. It was exclusively our family's weekend and holiday retreat for seven years before we began sharing it with others via HomeAway and VRBO. Our family has had countless special times there with our children, friends, and visiting relatives. It isn't just another rental house - the rocking chair is the one Grandma Linda rocked all her children in, the rugs have been in the family for 40 years, and so on. We are very happy to share the house with others and have been thrilled that so many guests have discovered the Santa Cruz mountains while visiting.

Boulder Creek: Boulder Creek is a vintage small town - it has one stop sign! It's the town closest to Big Basin Redwood State Park, so most visitors go to Boulder Creek on their way to take walks or hikes in the old-growth redwoods. Even though Boulder Creek is very small, there are two grocery stores - one Safeway-like, the other more similar to Whole Foods. There are also several restaurants, some great coffee places, a brewery, a couple of fun antique stores & thrift stores, a pharmacy a tea room, and a few places to get wonderful massages/facials. One of our favorite outings (and our dog's!) is a ride on Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad - we ride the steam train up to old-growth redwoods at Bear Mountain, followed by a hike among more amazing old-growth redwoods at Henry Cowell State Park (right next door). We also love to spend the afternoon exploring the river and river-beaches and berry picking. Several guests have gone zip-lining at nearby Mount Hermon's Redwood Canopy Tours...we've gone as well and it is so much fun! Visiting some local wineries is another favorite way to spend an afternoon with friends.

Why Suzanne Koch chose California

We loved the magnificent redwoods all around, including our own 'Fairy Ring,' and only 25 minutes down the hill to the beaches.

Notes:
Enjoy your own private Redwoods 'Fairy Ring' with a large family hammock strung across the grove halfway up the hill above the main house. The sky is crystal clear at night, and the stars shimmer above the outdoor fire pit or the beautiful outdoor hot tub. The hot tub is the traditional California style-- a large round (84') wood hot tub with bench seating and dozens of hydrotherapy jets. The house has two decks. The front deck with a cozy table and umbrella, seating four. The large back deck overlooks a stream and waterfall (in the rainy season) with a redwood table seating eight, two rocking chairs, and an outdoor gas grill.

Beautiful mountain home. Very comfortable and charming.

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a wonderful stay. This charming mountain home was comfortable, well taken care of with all the amenities we needed at hand. I loved being in the redwoods and we enjoyed the roaring camp railroad ride, visiting Capitola (especially Gayle's Bakery) and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The only thing we didn't love was the steep driveway. However, Suzanne gave very detailed directions on how to find and navigate the driveway (which was very helpful).

Simple easy and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our quick two night stay this weekend was lovely. I wish we got to spend more time here! We all loved the house so much we didn't even make it down to the boardwalk or the beach! We did make it to Big Basin for a beautiful hike and came back to soak in the hot tub. Sitting outside under the redwoods and on the deck is such a retreat.

There were eight women at the house and we all fit in the main house. We had all the tools for BBQ, cooking elaborate dinners and breakfasts each day. There is one bathroom which was slightly hard for eight women but it all worked out fine!

Suggestion to renters: make sure to read through the rules and "items to bring" list....we were supposed to bring toilet paper but we all didn't so went down to the town market for more (which was very easy) but very expensive! I think many of us will definitely come back here whether it's with each other again or our own families!

Thank you so much Suzanne for your clear and consistent communication and for opening up your lovely family home. -Ashley

Magical cottage in the woods

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect venue for my relaxed, homey bachelorette weekend. The house is beautiful and cozy, although it easily fit our 7-person party. The property was easy to find thanks to the homeowners thorough instructions and the woodsy, mountainous location can't be beat. It's located about 2-minutes away from a cute little town with little grocery stores and restaurants and the kitchen included every cooking utensil we needed for a weekend of grilling! The hot tub was also lovely. Take advantage of this unique property!

Fun, cozy cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. This is a comfortable place right off HWY 9. Everything is clean and kept up. Awesome deck off the back with a BBQ, plenty of seating and a fire pit & jacuzzi. The inside is nice with plenty of space to relax, play games or eat a meal. The hammock nook was perfect for an afternoon nap. The owners were quick to answer any questions we had. No problems getting in or checking out. We'll definitely come back!

The driveway accommodates 3 cars. But it's tight. I'd also suggest ear plugs for any light sleepers.

A lovely cabin nestled in the woods with all the comforts of home and none of the chores!

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! We had the most wonderful getaway at the cabin. You feel as though you are at a retreat miles away from everything, and yet it's less than an hour from home. Calling it a cabin doesn't tell the whole story. It is a lovely wooded holiday home, tastefullly decorated, comfortable and well-appointed, with everything you could need and then some. In one day we went for a long hike in the gorgeous redwoods, relaxed on the warm sands at the beach, had a gourmet meal, and finished the evening with a hot tub under the stars. A truly magical visit! We are going home as rested and rejuvenated as a week away with none of the hassle. Thank you for sharing your home with us...we can't wait to come back soon!
