About Cathy

I built and run the top lakefront resort at Lake of the Ozarks in MO all summer long. It's 7 days a week for about 100 days straight. I loved taking my winter vacation where it's warm so in 2012 I decided to use my building skills to flip a couple condos in St Thomas. After purchasing them and remodeling, I decided to hold on to them and let others enjoy my little piece of heaven. It worked out so well, I added a small pub in Charlotte Amalie to my collection of businesses. Side Street Pub. When visiting the Islands be sure to stop by Side Street. I am blessed to have the best of both worlds.

Cathy purchased this condo in 2012

Why Cathy chose East End

I chose this property because of the views my units have directly over to St John. It's a beautiful sight to watch the boats coming and going from the Marina.

We enjoyed this older complex with a newly updated unit. It was difficult to communicate in the beginning vrbo/owner along with the exceptence of our submission. But it all worked out in the end.

uvsi family trip

  • 5 of 5

This condo is great for family of 4-5. Great location to the ferry if you want to visit St. John or Bristish island. Very close to Coral beach for kids aquarium exhibit. I suggested if you plan to do one or more activities at Coral Worl, book early online. The Moe's market is within 5 minutes of driving, this market have every thing you need. If you dont have a car, you can call a cab to come get you, can by red hook ferry is closer, so it cheaper. A short walk to Sapphire beach, blue, warm water. Kids can see fishes by snorkel or just short dive with their goggle. Oh one important, there alway a security gaurd at the gate property on duty for 24 hours. I recommend this property eventhough it is not a beach front. Our family enjoy it. Cathy the manager for this property is very nice, she communicates with you when ever you have questions.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the time to rate the Villa and provide additional information for other travelers. It's sort of best of both worlds as you sit on the balcony & watch the boats coming & going from the marina or walk across the parking lot to beautiful Sapphire Beach.

Beautiful Condo, Amazing Beach!

  • 5 of 5

We just stayed here last week for 7 nights. After reading negative reviews on the condo complex I was nervous what I would find until I actually got to there. It's beautiful! The condo overlooks the marina and had beautiful nights with the marina lit up and the moon over St. John in the distance. The sun is a little bright in the morning but keeping the shades closed in the morning works great to keep the sun out. The condo is very nicely decorated. I usually book my vacations through VRBO and reading reviews on the whole complex I assume the bad reviews are by people expecting a hotel environment which this is not really going to give you that. Everyone was friendly. The owners of the dive shop invited my children to their personal Easter egg hunt and even gave me a free drink and hugs all around, they were warm and inviting. I couldn't find the cooler the first night and sent an email to Cathy and someone knocked on our door later and brought us a cooler and asked even we needed anything else. Great service!! The pool is great, the pool bar is boarded up but really who wants to sit at a pool bar and pay for drinks when you are staying in a condo you can bring your drinks down for free. I have seen a lot of negative on the pool but we loved it. It's a bit windy up by the pool so on a hot day it felt great but on the colder days we had to stay down by the beach where there is less wind. Not having a car we had to take cabs and use the Safari bus. We took a 60.00 cab ride to the condo once we got there and it was very easy (And fun) to catch the safari for 1.00 - 2.00 per person down to redhook, downtown ect. There are cabs everywhere, we would take the Safari to redhook and then take a cab back. The Safari is like a tour bus with no commentary. The hill is quite steep that you walk up to get to the main road to pick the cab up but it is not a far distance and my 6 and 8 year old did it. You can also cut through the condos just south of Sapphire beach and go to the main road that way and then there is no hill to walk up. We saved a ton of money and piece of mind not renting a car (The roads in St Thomas are crazy and steep), the beach itself is incredible! The snorkeling is great along the edges just be careful as it is pretty shallow and you don't want to get caught up over the coral and scratched up. Lots of cruise ships come in on Tues & head to Sapphire so use that day to explore somewhere less appealing to the cruise ship passengers. We will be back

Great property, odd location

  • 4 of 5

This rental is very nice. Everything seems to be new (except the broken toilet paper holder which may be fixed by now). The lanai faces the marina, which is its own little world. We enjoyed watching the tour boats and fishing boats come and go. I wanted to trim the palm trees that limited the view of the marina, but they weren't too much of a hindrance. Nice pool. Great beach.

As for the location, be prepared. The "safari" bus system will pick you up at the gate of Sapphire (which is a STEEP hike up the hill). Be aware, however, that the safari runs clockwise around the island, so if you are dropped off at Red Hook, just a half mile down the road (emphasis on DOWN, because if you hike back, it's a lot of UP), and you want to go back to Sapphire, you would get on the safari and ride all the way back to "town" (Charlotte Amalie) and it would take over an hour to get back. In Red Hook, you can board the ferry to St. John, which we found to be far friendlier than St. Thomas. If you don't rent a car, you can take a very vigorous hike on the Caneel Trail and come back on the tamer Lindberg Trail. Several nice eateries.

Red Hook also has a grocery store where you can buy things for more than double what you pay on the mainland. So if you're planning to use the very nice kitchen at the rental, plan to pay more for the fixings than you will pay for prepared food. The wine wasn't too badly priced, but milk was $6 a gallon! Note: it is legal to kill the local chickens, if you're inclined to a little home butchering! But you can't kill the iguanas. There is only one place to eat on the property. Don't expect a smile from the lady who works there. If she speaks English, she doesn't admit it.

If you're sight-seeing, there isn't much on St. Thomas. If you want a quiet beach, this is the place. Take food with you! People will tell you it's not possible to take the safari to the airport. It is possible if you don't mind a half mile walk. The sidewalk is nice and wide and it's all downhill. We got from Sapphire to the airport for $2 each. Taxi is $30. The safari is kind of fun once you get used to it. Most locals won't speak to you unless you smile and say good morning/afternoon.

If you walk to/from Red Hook, be very vigilant and in good physical condition. In the dark? I wouldn't try it.

The perfect place!

  • 5 of 5

After numerous recommendations from friends to use VRBO.com, this was our first VRBO experience. If every place is as good as this one, we are definitely VRBO converts.

The condo was fantastic! It is decorated like a high-end condo rather than the warn cheap wicker tropical decor you see in many hotels, so it immediately feels very comfortable. There were plenty of amenities including beach towels and beach chairs, extra towels, coffee pot, etc., and a fully stocked kitchen including a blender. We found everything we needed and really felt at home. The space was very roomy and the bedroom can be closed off using the sliding shutter doors. This was ideal for keeping the room dark on those mornings we wanted to sleep-in. The wifi worked well, the place was very clean and if you're wary of bugs (the norm in tropical climates), you have nothing to worry about here. (This was a huge relief for me!)

The balcony overlooks the quaint Sapphire Beach marina. Sapphire Beach is off to the side of the building and is one of the prettiest beaches on St. Thomas. The snorkeling is great...better than anything we saw when we took a snorkel day tour! We saw numerous fish, sea turtles, sting rays, eagle ray, squid, nurse shark etc. There is also a public dive shop for snorkel/dive rental and a couple of options for lunch.

Red Hook has several good restaurants and Moe's Market is the nearest grocery store (located in Red Hook). Red Hook is less than a mile away and although walkable, after walking to/from town a couple of times, we chose to go by taxi since the road is narrow with no real shoulder to walk on. I would definitely not recommend walking with children. Plan on $4/pp each way by taxi.

Definitely take the ferry to St. John. It leaves on the hour, every hour, until 11p. It's a 20 min ride and is only $14 roundtrip per person. St. John is beautiful with many restaurants, shopping and activities. There are a few bars/restaurants on the beach where the ferry stops; ideal for watching the sunset with a boat drink in hand.

After an exhaustive search to find the perfect rental, we highly recommend this place and we will absolutely be back again.
