About Susan Kelly

Susan Kelly purchased this House in 1988
Why Susan Kelly chose Becket
Peaceful, private, charming. Swim and Hike on the property, close to town and attractions. This property is part of an historic model dairy farm dating from the 1800's. The house is built on the foundation of what was a large windmill. A few years ago we remodeled the house and began renting to summer folks- turns out that's really fun- we've so enjoyed meeting guests from all over the world. Unlike many rentals in Becket, the house is not part of a development- drive in, close the gate and enjoy the privacy of 200 acres. We are always upgrading the property- two years ago we rebuilt the bridge over the stream and cleared more of the meadow to hold our daughter's wedding on the property- ceremony by the lake , cocktails under the apple trees, and dancing til the wee hours in the barn. Magical! There are hiking trails by the streams, old wood roads, and the remains of grist mill dams from the early 1800's. In 1994 Andy and a friend reconstructed a traditional post and beam barn on an old foundation, hand chiseling the pegs, and inviting family and friends to help with the barn raising. The barn is rented separately, for weddings and other gatherings.
What makes this House unique
Weddings! . We also rent the property, including the house and the gorgeous restored barn for weddings, family reunions, and gatherings. The barn has three large bays for dancing, a seating area and a loft with couches, overlooking the dance floor.. Beautiful antique rugs cover the floors, and two artisan made chandeliers create a rustic, elegant atmosphere. The house rental is special because the meadows, trails, and swimming are right at hand.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Wonderful Berkshires retreat
We had a lovely stay. Very beautiful scenery and very close to Jacob’s Pillow.
Wonderful Pond for Swimming
For me, the highlight of our stay was long swims in the pond. The pond is deep and provides a huge area with no weeds or obstructions for great swimming. I would guess the temp at high 70s to 80. Perfect. Other highlights: exploring the interconnected ponds by canoe, paddling or swimming to the 2nd pond where there is no visible sign of civilization (not even the house), sitting on the back porches (upstairs and down), watching wildlife (beaver, deer, birds, ducks), lots of comfortable spots for sitting in the house to talk, read, play music. Very easy check in and out and communication. I do have a few complaints that do not reduce my 5 star rating but might be helpful to owners or renters. You can swim right off the dock. The water is deep enough. But for us older renters, it would be great to have a ladder. I couldn't haul myself out of the water onto the end of the dock. I was able to get out onto some flat rocks by the side of the dock, but they were slippery. Walking in the woods was more bushwacking than trail. It was too difficult and buggy for me. The tred on the stairs is narrow and a bit slippery with the carpet - again an older person concern. It is so quiet and peaceful there, I wonder if more trees/bushes between the house and the road would further minimize the noise from the street. Finally, I think the policy of VRBO should be that your security deposit should be immediately and automatically refunded when the house has been vacated and cleaned /inspected. Whenever I have used VRBO, I have had to ask for my deposit back. I always receive it promptly, but I am afraid that if I ever forget to ask I would lose that money.
Hi Diane, thank you so much for the feedback and recommendations. I am so happy that you had a nice relaxing stay!!
Idyllic dream vacation spot!
Our family couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect vacation. The house was clean, spacious, warm and welcoming.
An exceptional property.
We canoed, swam, fished, hiked, picnicked..etc. Absolutely stunning! Looking forward to our next visit.
This is a lovely site very close to a Jacobs Pillow Dance center (not to be missed). There is a nice swimming lake and streams running through the property.
Charming property, Comfortable Home, Feels like stepping back in time
Spent 3 days here, enjoyed them all thoroughly. Beds were comfortable, property was as described. Enjoyed canoeing around pond.
SWEET AND SPECIAL COTTAGE ON BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY
We spent a week at this charming cottage which sits on gorgeous private property complete with apple trees,
a stream, and a beaver-filled pond. The pond appears smaller than it actually is and we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves spending lots of time in the canoe, searching for the ever-present beavers, turtles, and birds.A deer surprised us one afternoon, bounding along the edge of the pond in the brush. It is perfect for a couple or a couple with older children. The second bath is on the main floor and the stairs are a little steep. The top floor bath is inside the master bedroom, quite close to the bed.
We had lunch often under the apple tree - it reminded us of a scene from a French movie. And of course the proximity to Jacobs Pillow was an added bonus and we spent hours not only at concerts but observing classes.
It is truly one of the most scenic properties we have ever seen.
Becket is the home of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, world class dance in a gorgeous mountain setting, cafe, free events, classes etc. Lee Premium Outlet Village shopping is just down the road.Close to all Berkshires attractions such as Tanglewood, Berkshire Theater Festival , Norman Rockwell Museum,.
