About E.J. O'Leary
Born and raised in Michigan, I currently reside with my wife North of Atlanta, GA.
E.J. O'Leary purchased this Cottage in 2011
Why E.J. O'Leary chose Shelby
Four family generations have enjoyed summers on “the hill” over looking Lake Michigan. My grandfather purchased property from his friend and owner of “Casa del Camino” and built 'Tree Top Lodge” (which is really a cottage) in 1929. In 1988 I purchased the cottage from my mother and three uncles. The two cottages have shared the hill and 10 acres of property for over 85 years Casa del Camino was built in 1928. In 2011 I had an opportunity to purchase the cottage from the second family owner. The cottage was in need of major repair and my intent was to restore this local landmark to its original state as well as preserve the harmony on the hill that our family has enjoyed for so many years. The restoration project for the main cottage, guesthouse and two level garage took approximately 18 months. We are very pleased with the results.
What makes this Cottage unique
Family, friends and visitors all comment on the wonderful character of the cottage. You'll find that the rooms are smaller than newer homes, but the spanish charm and setting is perfect for a family vacation, friends outing or a romantic week on the shores of Lake Michigan. We've also had a few small wedding receptions on the hill, to include mine.

We have been vacationing here for the last 5 years!
We love coming to Casa del Camino each summer because it is a beautiful cottage overlooking Lake Michigan. The details of the cottage are enticing but the details of our care from the owner are so thoughtful. He really does think about how to accommodate guests so we are not lacking in our vacation experience. There is a game room in the basement with wonderful games for us. The well-kept antique furniture makes it magical. The beds are comfortable. We come home very well rested and well cared for!
Casa Del Camino
This has to be one of the most beautiful places that I have ever rented. The property is amazing, the furnishings outstanding, and the owner makes you feel like a welcomed guest. I highly recommend the Casa del Camino for a lakeside getaway!!!
Thanks for your kind words. We very much appreciate the care you took with the cottage. It was in great shape.
Looking forward to your return!
History, Charm and a Perfect Setting
A stay at The Spanish Cottage, or Casa del Camino, is a truly unique experience on Lake Michigan. The 1920’s Spanish-style cottage is full of historical detail but beautifully maintained and updated. Pictures and descriptions can’t capture the charm of the architecture and furnishings any more than they can capture the lake breezes that keep every room cool, or the magnificent view of the lake. The owner is very responsive and has anticipated nearly every need that a family could have, from “floaties” to extra tables for outdoor picnics. The location is close to many activities, but there was hardly a need to leave our hillside, since we could walk straight down to the beach or go floating on Stoney Creek. If we didn’t feel like cooking, Stoney Lake Inn was close by. It’s a perfect place for families — I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Hello Gloria, it was a pleasure to host your friends and family. Thanks for the kind words regarding the cottage! Please keep us in mind for future family gatherings. Best regards,
Paradise on the Hill
This was my 3rd year spending a week at Casa del Camino and I am already itching to return. Words and pictures could never really do this place justice-- it is a FEELING. When you walk in you are surrounded by light and warmth, and you will be immediately captivated by the view.
The dining room is my favorite part of this cottage because it is the perfect place to catch the morning breeze with a cup of coffee and cherry strudel from Cherry Point (make sure to check that out!). The breeze flows through this cottage in every room and you always feel like you are somewhere far from the United States.
The screened in porch serves as the perfect place to read books, nap and watch a storm come across the lake. Even on rainy days Casa del Camino is paradise!
The small town offers lots of activities for the lake such as kayaking, paddle boarding, float trips from one lake to the next, etc. We enjoy grabbing a few meals at the Stony Lake Cafe and we are always sure to grab an ice cream for at least one dinner (btw- one scoop is more like 3).
The cottage itself is so perfectly appointed. EJ and his family have gone to great lengths to make sure that you want for nothing while you are staying in their home. They are very accessible and always respond quickly in the rare case that something additional is needed.
Casa del Camino feels like an extension of "home" for me and the women that I travel with, and we will surely return for many, many years.
Relaxing, unique house overlooking the lake
We had a wonderful week here. The public access beach is a quick 2-min walk down the hill and the outflow from the creek there means the lake water isn't too cold. We loved hanging out on the beach for hours each day and then coming back to sit out on the screen porch overlooking the lake. The house is a quick walk to a playground (very entertaining for kids) and close by to a number of other attractions (lighthouse, petting zoo, etc). We were also amused by the cheering and excitement from the adjacent summer camp. We would love to come back -- perhaps renting the two adjacent properties as well for a larger family reunion.
Thanks Emilie, sounds like your family and friends had a great time on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan! Many thanks for taking care of the Casa del Camino during your stay. Would be great if you could make a return visit, expand the group and include the cottage next door (Tree Top Lodge). Together they are are on 10 Acres of property overlooking Benona Beach.
Best regards, E.J. & Nancy
Beautiful cottage with stunning Lake Michigan view
My husband and I just returned from our stay at Casa del Camino. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully restored. Our favorite part of this cottage was the beautiful lake view from the living room and screened in porch. We could have spent the entire time relaxing on the comfortable glider and gazing out at Lake Michigan. We also enjoyed the basement game room and the shuffleboard table. Everything we needed was provided and the kitchen was very well stocked. Thank you E.J. For sharing your beautiful cottage! We had a great time!
Matt & Barbara, you were great guests...thanks for taking care of the Casa del Camino!
Looking forward to your return visit.
