A place to rest your head and a place where you feel at home. The Terraces is a place where you are treated as Ohana. We are glad to have you on the island, and believe that most businesses try to color your Hawaii experience one way or another. The point of our farm, is that we don't. Hawaii is a beautiful place. Where you can have fun all day, and always come back to our Ohana and yours.
'The Terraces' is a educational and sustainable farm. Located on the south side of Hawaii's Big Island. We specialize in every thing from fresh food, to the Hawaii experience. But every thing we do here we do with love, a smile, and the Aloha spirit.
The Terraces' motto is, 'where small things matter, choose wisely.'
Our mission is to provide an environment in paradise, where you choose your vacation.
We have every thing from vegetables and meals, to Big Island knowledge. But that is far from the end product. Here we are trying to make a place, a home, and a foundation for the Hawaii experience YOU want.
We have good cell phone service, and parking and we can tell you about many of the 'secret spots' in Hawaii ... but we do not have cable TV.
Local attractions include: South Point, Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach (Punuluu), the fishing village of Milolii, Nahalehu, Manuka State Park, Wood Valley, Road to the Sea, Hookena, Whittington Beach State Park, Pahala, coffee farms and Wood Valley.
Local activities include: hiking, swimming, snorkeling, ocean side cliffs for jumping and diving, snorkeling, volcanoes, lava hikes, dolphin swims, and whales (in season).
Find local organic fruits and vegetables, not to mention health and harmony.
We have plenty of fresh air and a 2980 foot elevation makes air conditioning or heating obsolete, the temperature in the cabin varies only a few degrees. At night you can look out the many windows and, on a clear night, see all the stars that you miss in more 'civilized' locations.
Since we are not licensed as either a B&B or a restaurant we can not serve meals and charge for them. You may cook for yourself in the kitchen. We welcome our guests, as friends, to eat with the family and contribute what they will toward the cost of food and preparation as a donation ... we have no hard and fast rules, we solicit information concerning your preferences and see meals as enjoyable social occasions. You are welcome to make your own breakfast and lunch. Just let us know what meals you will join us for and if you need to have any box lunches made for your excursions.
Kitchen, shower and bath are shared with our very neat farm helper who also is responsible for cleaning.
Infant and child beds, as well as floor mats suitable for teens (who are welcome to stay in the tree house) are available
One caution: We 'enjoy' intermittent weather related problems with our microwave based internet link. E-mail is usually fine, but it will not support streaming video. There is a nearby church that intentionally leaves on open network available that can always be used in an emergency.
For stays of one or two nights we ask for your understanding if we change your room assignment to a comparable room to accommodate a long term rental.

Phillip was the Program Manager for the Manned Undersea Systems and technology group of a major oceanographic institution. he was spent over 6,000 hours underwater. He is a fellow of the Explorers Club.
Phillip Sharkey purchased this cabin in 2007
Stacey was in Hawaii on vacation and looking, for property. After looking at over a hundred properties, she chose this one because of the incredible view and the 600 year old ohia tree.
'The Terraces' is the life long dream of founder, Stacey Richards. It was created to provide an environment for people to learn about their health and nutrition, as well as provide a venue for community activities.
In Hawaii we have a word: 'Ohana'. Now, the literal meaning of Ohana is family. but the way it is often used is to describe a guest house or spare bedroom, because that is where your Ohana would stay. So at The Terraces we try to provide both.

Friendly and helpful hosts made us feel right at home. The cabin had everything we needed. Loved the gardens. Great location
The cabin is located in a beautiful garden setting. The owner's dog and one of their cats stopped by at times.
Of the various VRBO properties we have rented to date, this is the first one that did disappoint us. It did not meet the standard we are used from VRBO. Instead of going into the various issues that we feel should be addressed, we'll address them directly to the owner.
Of interest to other visitors of this location maybe:
* visit to the Place of Refuge ( during our picnic on the beach we saw whales)
* visit to Southpoint
* Volcano National Park (very tricky to find a parking space)
* grocery stores are close by along route 11
* nice restaurants are Mehe's Ka'u bar & grill (Ocean View) and Manago (Captain Cook), a 100 year old hotel and restaurant (make reservation)
* In case you have laundry to do, visit the local laundromat: they do it for you. For about $2.00 per pound, they wash, dry and fold your clothes.
Phil went out of his way to make us feel welcome. He had a schedule conflict in placing us in the house shown in the listing, so he placed us in the second floor of his home adjacent to the listed property. The accomodations were clean, comfortable and private. Although we were disappointed in not being able to stay in the listed property. Phil thoughtfully prepared breakfast each day along with wonderful locally grown coffees. Also gave us guidance in touring the South Point area. We had a 4WD Jeep, and found the roads not as fearful as the guidebooks lead you to believe. Recommeded.
