About Sue Penrose
We're a British family with a love of France, who settled over ten years ago in what's undoubtedly its most stunning region. We moved to Germany four years ago for professional reasons, but still pop back when we can, to see our friends in this wonderfully welcoming village, a stone's throw from beautiful Lake Annecy.
Sue Penrose purchased this House in 2002
Why Sue Penrose chose Annecy
We've lived in several areas of France, but the Haute-Savoie has it all - in all seasons! We fell in love with this 'maison bourgeoise' and set about renovating it in 2002. We particularly liked the architectural style of these houses built for the wealthy merchants of Annecy in the 1920s and 1930s, who wanted country retreats close to the town centre. The houses were built in locations where the merchants could enjoy the best views of the mountains and have larger gardens than would have been possible in the centre. With views and relaxation in mind, the house was designed with huge windows in the living room and master bedroom, facing southwards to the Alps and a sunny private garden, with plenty of shady spots to doze off in on hot summer afternoons. Restoring this 1930s country home gave us the opportunity to think about how to combine authenticity with eco-friendliness. The wooden features are all original, the heating is by an energy saving heat pump and the original well and sloping terrain are part of an underground rainwater recuperation system. We believe you can retain old fashioned charm and be environmentally friendly too!
What makes this House unique
We love the stunning alpine views from this sunny house. It's in a quiet, friendly village just 15 mins (7km) from Annecy's magical lakeside town center & beaches. It's a great place for families and friends to get together and make the most of every season, skiing, swimming, hiking, or cycling by day, then coming home to relax in the cosy lounge or in the garden. Some of our best evenings have been spent watching the sunset over Annecy from the terrace or wooded aperitif spot, then barbecuing in the late evening sun. If you don't want to cook, we can recommend the high quality, but affordable gourmet restaurant Le Clos du Chateau within a 5-minute stroll from the house. The restaurant closes during Christmas-New Year and part of August. These are our favourite things about the area that has become home: • Lake Annecy – the purest lake in Europe: crystal clear waters in a picture postcard setting - for swimming; sailing and water sports galore. You can walk, skate or cycle on designated paths around its shores • Annecy “Vieille Ville”- wander enchanting medieval streets, laced with canals & lined with lovely restaurants, scenic terraces & dreamy cafés, to see why Annecy has become “the Venice of the Alps” • The Northern Alps – some of the best, most varied skiing in Europe, from traditional village resorts to challenging summits – all within easy reach. Great also for hiking! • The nearby Bauges, Aravis & Semnoz mountains – protected beauty spots for nature lovers; walks with breathtaking views of Mont Blanc; delightful flora & fauna & farms to visit, with delicious cheeses. There are sporting and cultural highlights throughout the year, including the fabulouus Lake Festival in Aug and the Annimation Film Festival in June. The mountain stage of the 2018 Tour de France leaves Annecy on 17/7 and amateurs can race this stage on 8/7. Participants staying at La Maison de Promery can house their bikes securely in the garage and will be within 7km of the race start point.

Stunning and beautiful !
Beautiful house, very spacious and everything tiny thing was provided and more. Lovely large back garden with BBQ which we used several times even though it was New year ! Also stunning views from upstairs master bedroom and sitting on the front veranda in the New year sunshine, will always be a memorable holiday, thanks 😊
Thanks, I'm really glad that you all enjoyed yourselves and that New Year at our place was full of happy memories. We've never tried BBQ-ing in the winter, but you're not the first - some of our guests last year chilled their bubbly in the snow whilst grilling outside, so following your lead we're now keen to give winter BBQ-ing a go too and will leave the BBQ out for our guests all year round!
Beautiful, characterful house with stunning views in an area of outstanding beauty!
This is a truly beautiful home, with plenty of room for a family of four, plus 2 grandparents and family dog! The house was very clean and comfortable and well equipped. Having our dinner every night with stunning views of the mountains is pretty hard to beat! We also loved the sunny veranda at the front of the house, which became a regular spot for a relaxing drink and a read before cooking dinner. We were new to this part of France, and it didn’t disappoint! Annecy is just stunning! We spent lots of days around the lake - swimming and kayaking, and cycling around the lake is wonderful as parts of the route are on dedicated cycle paths. We had wonderful days out in Geneva and Lausanne too. There is so much to do in this area - and something for everyone, whether you want an active or a relaxing holiday! Sue, the owner was incredibly helpful beforehand, giving us information about the area, nearest restaurants and supermarkets etc. She also arranged a birthday cake for my son who became a teenager shortly after our arrival. We were very touched by this kind and thoughtful gesture. Michelle, the housekeeper is wonderful and keeps the house in tip top shape. She is very friendly and lives close by. The neighbours were very friendly too. We couldn’t fault our stay, and would definitely return to this wonderful characterful house. We had a fantastic family holiday!
Many thanks for your lovely review Megan and I'm really glad your family enjoyed Annecy and this fabulous area and were happy and comfortable in our home. You're most welcome for a return visit, there's so much more to discover and new activities to try out, whatever the season! Thanks also on Michelle's behalf, who is always delighted to hear when our guests have enjoyed their holidays.
This was a lovely home that was really unique!
This home had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Lots of space for everyone, great views from the living room and wonderful architectural details that made it really special. It was about 15 minutes to Annecy but had a couple of restaurants just minutes away. Owner communicated well and provided additional directions to the home. We would stay here again if we ever had the chance!
Thank you for your kind comments and I'm delighted that you liked and were comfortable in our house. I would love to welcome you again on a future trip.
Perfect house for a perfect relaxing holiday
We are a family of 5 with older children 14/18/22. Maison Promery was perfect for us. We had everything we could have needed for a home from home feel. The house is set outside of Annecy and we enjoyed being out of the business after a day by the lake or in the town. The house is beautifully quirky and was well suited to our family needs. It is spacious allowing the kids to have their own rooms. The lounge has plenty of comfortable seating and the outside space is peaceful and you can find full sun or shade. The barbecue cooked well and we spent several evenings outside enjoying family meals.
We took bikes with us and spent a lot of time cycling around different parts of the lake. We enjoyed being out in our kayak on the lake and swimming. We also enjoyed walking in the mountains. We did a beautiful walk to the waterfalls at Angon went up to admire the views of Mont Blanc at Semnoz. The town of Annecy is one of the prettiest places we have been to. It has a lovely atmosphere and great places to eat and enjoy an evening out. We were sorry that the Chateau de Clos in Promery was closed as we would have loved to try a meal there.
We were blessed with mostly good weather but had a couple of rainy days which we managed to fill. Decathlon is just down the road and we can fill a few hours in there!
My favourite moments of the holiday were sitting on the front terrace with a drink and a book. Sue made sure that we had everything that we needed and has been very helpful. Thanks Sue for a lovely holiday.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your holiday Wendy. It's great when you can find lots of activities to do as a family when the kids are older. The cycling and walking opportunities are hard to beat here and it's even better if you enjoy kayaking and other water sports as well. Thanks for your review and really kind comments about the house and I've love to be able to welcome you in the future, perhaps in the winter season, when you can try out different resorts and winter sports within easy reach from here. Returning guests are always offered a special discount, so I hope to see you back here soon.
Rainbows and Sunshine
We had a wonderful stay in Promery with our three small children. We enjoyed cracking thunderstorms, triple rainbows over the stunning view from the home and wonderful, hot weather. We even had a hot air balloon fly close over the home on our very last day. Very close to many wonderful scenic locations. I think our favorite was the Gorges Du Fier which was about 15 mins away and had a stunning walkway attached to the cliff walls of the gorge. Sue was so helpful and managed to acquire toys for our kids to play with during our 2 week stay. There were even soft toys for my three kids to snuggle at night. There were so many small details added especially for our kids that it really made them feel so at home, and our stay very relaxed. The housekeeper even bought over outdoor recliners too and she was available if we needed her at all. She even came by on the last day and let the children keep some cars which was so kind. FYI to parents who want to visit, the main lounge/connected kitchen have doors to prevent babies accessing the stairwells so no baby gates necessary at the main level. It is also easy to block the door to the front porch so you can leave the front, glass doors open. The bedroom in the basement is most suited for teens or young adults. The washer dryer is one unit, not separate machines. This was fine for us as we had hot weather and used the clothes line outback. A wonderful home and a fabulous stay. Thank you for all of your effort to make us feel so welcome.
An Outstanding Property in a Convenient Location.
This is a large, very roomy, nicely restored, slightly pleasantly quirky house on three levels, that serves equally well for couples like us who like the extra space, or larger groups. It is in good condition throughout, very well equipped, with the equivalent of two bathrooms, albeit a bit distributed, and has magnificent mountain views from the main front rooms. It is located in a pleasant small village, about 2 kms from the small town of Pringy that has most of the facilities needed for a holiday, including a couple of good restaurants, and has off-road parking for at least two cars, maybe three at a push! All the main tourist centres,
Lake Annecy, Mont Blanc, Grenoble, etc., are easily reachable for day trips by car. Would we stay here again, definitely!
I'm so glad that our house worked well for you as the base for the alpine section of your European tour and that you were comfortable there. It was nice to have been able to exchange lots of emails before your stay, so I feel I know you both, even though we didn't actually meet. I hope you will indeed be able to make another trip, despite Australia being so far from Annecy and look forward to welcoming you back.
