About Steve

We're a professional couple from Seattle with an importing business that brings us to all corners of the world. We love out of the way, undiscovered paradises.

Steve purchased this chalet in 2011

Why Steve chose Northwest & Islands

We became attracted to Marblemount a number of years ago while on hiking vacations and purchased a small farm there. This beautiful chalet on the Skagit River came along a little later, AMAZINGLY, just a few short weeks AFTER we took the rainbow shot that now serves as our logo. 'Rainbow House' is being enjoyed by an ever-increasing number of friends, clients and guests who have discovered the restorative magic of the Upper Skagit Valley and the North Cascades.

What makes this chalet unique

Wherever we are in the world, all we need to do is think of ourselves at our North Cascades property, taking brisk walks in the mountain air along the Cascade River to the Marblemount fish hatchery, watching Marblemount's famous bald eagles in Winter or the King Salmon running in early Fall.

We call it a 'Marblemount Moment.' So will you!

North Cascades

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Rainbow House. It was perfectly situated to allow access to the North Cascades and nearby parks and hikes. Excellent location in beautiful country. Steve was very easy to work with and highly responsive. We'd stay again!

Comfortable, Beautiful Home Close to North Cascades NP

  • 4 of 5

This home is as lovely and well appointed as it looks in the photos. Living room furniture is starting to get a bit worn, but it's still pretty comfy, the art is lovely, color scheme is warm and inviting, setting is very private. Even though it's on Hwy. 20, it's set far back from the road so that when you sit on one of the multiple decks, you feel tranquil and surrounded (literally) by natural beauty. The coffee maker needs an upgrade--a surprisingly low quality mini coffee maker for an otherwise upscale kitchen. The bathrooms are brand new, but there's a tub in the lovely bath upstairs (with a killer view out the window!), so if you are shower-takers-there's only the one off the master bedroom.

A few oddities--check-in process is a texted code on the day of; if you happen to be hiking where there's no reception, you don't actually get the code (and any other relevant message) until you are practically at the house. On the day we checked in, we were texted to wait until 5:30 to arrive, but the housekeeper was still there doing laundry until nearly 6:30. The rates for this house are deservedly on the high side, so it was pretty surprising to be asked to pay an additional fee if we wanted to use the washer and dryer in the adjacent laundry room.

All that said, when we had to leave two nights early from our five night stay as a result of illness, Steve graciously gave us a partial refund for one of the nights and waived the fee for the use of the washer and dryer. Thoughtful available kitchen essentials like trash bags, soap, dishwasher detergent, fresh sponge...but bring your own provisions--shopping nearby is pretty limited and beyond salt, pepper and a couple of spices, there is nothing else stocked in the kitchen. Would definitely recommend this lovely house!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your very helpful comments. We have been planning some kitchen and pantry amenity upgrades following a busy business travel season, and a number of the items you mentioned were already on the list! We do apologize for the late housecleaning, the housekeeper has now managed to find an assistant (not easy in such a remote location!) to help speed things up when check-out and check-in are on the same day. Regarding the door code, as each guest has their own unique code we have always awaited news from housekeeping. It now occurs to us that these codes can be predetermined, and we will try to do so for ASAP notification. Again, many thanks. Our regrets that illness shortened your stay. We hope you will visit us again!

Really lovely.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely and comfortable house on equally lovely land. You couldn't ask for better access to great hiking. And after a day of hiking, it felt wonderful to unwind on the porches and to admire the landscape. If we had the time, we'd stay here for weeks instead of days.

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice stay. The house is very comfortable and is set in a lovely little valley. Truly wonderful hikes in the area!!! The Northern Cascades are splendid! The little towns around aren't much to speak of, so bring your provisions. Steve is very nice to work with.

A magic spot in the Cascade mountains

  • 5 of 5

I stayed with my family at the Rainbow house for a long weekend. The location is perfect, with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and country side and close to multiple hiking trails. We really enjoyed the spectacular scenery of the surroundings and learned about the salmon cycle in the nearby river. The house is adorable and very comfortable, with everything needed to feel like home. Everything was immaculately clean and cozy. The beds were very comfortable, with nice quality linens. The kitchen was fully equipped and the bathrooms had toiletries and every detail needed. The owners were very easy to communicate with and we had no problem at all making the booking or getting there. They also gave us directions and information on the multiple hikes available in the area. If you like to have a quiet and comfortable place to be after visiting a beautiful area of WA with lots of outdoor activities, this is the perfect place for you!

Great location and beautiful house.

  • 4 of 5

This is a terrific house for a group to hang out in. Loved the cathedral ceiling and wood interior! I just wish we had more time to spend there. The owner was very helpful in accommodating our request to access the house before the official check-in time.
