About Sherron Skeele
As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist. Mahalo nui loa, Sherron
Sherron Skeele purchased this House in 2003
Why Sherron Skeele chose Hilo
The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, I took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and began the 'restoration' of the gardens. I made arrangements for the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department as a training drill for cadets. My husband and I then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. I love to share the gardens and continue with ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.

Great Home Base
Spent March 5- 18th in Hilo. The accommodation's were better than expected. David and Sherron have made a home away from home. Lovely decorated house, and very comfortable. Spectacular landscaped back yard. All the amenities to make a stay in Hawaii fit for royalty. We highly recommend this destination. Close to Volcano National parks. Plenty of pristine beaches nearby. Don't forget to hit the market on Wednesday's and Saturday's. We will definitely be back.

Very nice house and garden, noisy location.
The house is almost perfect, it is newly built, everything is brand new and very well chosen and arranged. The garden is spectacular and really a find. The location although is somewhat out of the way and the street next to it gets surprisingly noisy in the mornings, so starting 6 am the night is over. If you are looking for a quiet place, this is not the one. Unfortunately the advertised hot tub was not working the entire time, no apologies or updates were given during our stay. In general a nice place to stay with limitations.
Aloha Frank, Thank you for your positive comments about our Craftsman Garden Bungalow home and gardens. It is unfortunate that your overall experience was less than perfect for your 5 night stay. I understand your disappointment that the hot tub was closed, and I personally apologized when you arrived. I regret any misunderstandings on the progress of the repair. It was my understanding that you only wanted to be notified when the hot tub was fixed. Due to our remote location on an island more time is required for parts to be shipped and repairs made. It is also unfortunate that you were disturbed by traffic noise in the mornings from residents driving to work. Our future guests are made aware that there is some traffic noise, but only a very few out of hundreds of guests, many returning year after year, have considered it a problem. Mahalo nui loa, Sherron
Beautiful house and garden
This is a beautiful well equipped house with an amazing garden (including a water feature). I would have loved to stay longer.
Aloha John and Jo-Ann, Thank you for staying at our Craftsman Garden Bungalow in Hilo. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet you and visit when you arrived. I hope you will be able to return and stay longer next time. Mahalo nui loa, Sherron
