About the Property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

A 500 year old farmhouse with all of the original beautiful stone walls restored with the convenience and practicality of contemporary furnishings, 2 new luxury en suite bathrooms, newly renovated kitchen, 2 bedrooms, and a couch bed. Perfect for a family with up to 3 kids or just the 2 of you (maximum of 4 adults). Stay where the animals once stayed 1000 years ago, hiding from the heat of the summer in the cool stone caves, with the added plus of air conditioning just in case for those hot summer days.
Your residence is complete with a new kitchen with everything you need, a Jura coffee maker so you can play barista in the morning, an indoor dining table plus an outdoor patio to enjoy breakfast outside and gaze at the beautiful vineyards in front and the Larzac mountains to the side.
The detailing of the stone work is so beautiful and was restored stone by stone. One can see how each stone was carved out by hand and beautifully laid together to form the arches in the roof.
The nearby town of Aniane (5 minutes by car) and Gignac (8 minutes by car) have everything you need to get a croissant and pain au chocolat for breakfast and bring it home, a visit to the friendly and local butcher who knows each chicken he gets (really) once a week on Thursday. There are local markets - Aniane on Thursday and Gignac on Saturday. Plus the nearby Pezenas (30 minutes) has a wonderful historic visit and market on Saturday as well.
When you arrive, you will park right in front of your house, gaze at the flowers in front and vineyards all around.
When you walk in the kitchen is to your right with a full refrigerator and freezer, gas stove, oven, sink overlooking the vineyards in front, full size dishwasher, kettle for tea plus the Jura coffeemaker for espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes.
The dining area is just to the left leading on the the living room, flat screen tv, and a purple velvet couch that opens to a thick, comfortable queen size bed.
A luxury bathroom with a 2 person Duravit tub and shower is right off of the living room. Full size Duravit sink, duravit toilet, stone floor, and full size washer and dryer tucked in its own closet.
The largest bedroom is a step up from the living room with the beautiful stone walls surrounding, new king sized bed and mattress, and plenty of space to relax and unwind.
The second bedroom and bath are connected with a queen sized bed and en suite shower, sink, and suspended toilet.
Guests share our beautiful 14 meter pool with their own entrance and pathway to the pool. Guest pool hours are 10am to 5 pm.

Located along Aniane's wine country road and in the vineyards surrounded by the garrigue forest (dwarfed oak trees), tranquility awaits in this wine country escape just far enough away from it all to relax and in close proximity to many historic sites.

Close to the Unesco World site village, St Guilhem le Desert, the Pont du Diable and the potter's village St. Jean de Fos and in between the villages of Gignac and Aniane.

Montpellier and the beaches are 30 to 45 minutes away.

Hiking and Mountain biking trails abound including Pic St. Loup, scenic walks and drives plus vineyards hikes and wading in the natural streams a minute from your house.

The Roquefort caves, the king of cheese, are a beautiful 45 minute drive away with tours in English and French.

Pezenas, Molière is reputed to have created some of his famous characters in one of the barber shops and lovely to visit the old town's period mansions where you can peek at the interior courtyards. A wonderful Saturday morning market awaits.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1990

About the owner: We are a French American couple with 3 children that owns the Grand Cru winery, Mas de Daumas Gassac. We live part of the year in France and love the vineyards, the countryside, hikes through the forest, long days on the beach, the warm summers, the laid back lifestyle, and long lingering lunches and dinners on the terrace by the pool. Going to the local markets and music festivals, taking scenic drives, and biking and hiking through nature, wading in the streams - this is what summer is all about.

Why the Owner Chose Aniane, France:
We fell in love with this 500 year old farmhouse in the middle of the vineyards and spent 2 years renovating it, stone by stone. Recently, we renovated the ancient caves on the first level to make a warm and welcoming apartment for our family, friends, and visitors. The L'Herault area has less tourists than the neighboring Provence and a wonderful escape in nature. The Gassac Valley has a unique microclimate and organic soil that has never seen a chemical, completely organic - we drink the water right from the well after a bit of filtering. There were Roman and prehistorical remains discovered on the property and a pigeon house from Napoleonic times stands in the middle of the forest. This is our first time to share our cottage with visitors and we are excited to welcome you to our paradise!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
You live within the property of a world class vineyard near a couple of historical villages (St. Guilhem le desert and the pont de diable - 8th century), St Jean de Fos potter's village, Pezenas (medieval city), and Montpellier. 15 minutes away from the scenic Gorge of L'Herault where you can canoe in the summertime and swim at the beach, and the Grotte de Clamouse - crystal caves. Day or overnight trips can include Aigues Mortes (fortified city in the middle of the Camargue - the largest wildlife preserve in France), Provence, Avignon, Les Baux de Provence (where Van Gogh and Cezanne painted), Carcasonne (the third and most visited site in France), and even Barcelona (3 hours). Montpellier, the major city nearby - a 25 minute drive, is a 2 hour TGV train ride to Lyon and 3 hours and 15 minutes to Paris. The close villages of Aniane and Gignac both have butchers, bakeries, organic stores with gluten free options available, small cafes for lunch or dinner. Secluded, relaxing, quiet, an ideal retreat to get away from it all and enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle.
