We purchased Seashell Cottage in 2003. We own 3 cottages all on Lora Lane in Birch Bay. We rent 2 of them exclusively for travelers. After retiring, we moved into the 3rd cottage. Our other cottage is Lora's Cottage, VRBO # 594108. We believe in being locally connected and belong to the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, Bellingham – Whatcom Tourism and Go Northwest.
Patti purchased this Cottage in 2003
Why Patti chose Birch Bay
It is centrally located in Birch Bay to shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Particularly, of course, the beach is even easier! It is big enough for our growing family - grandkids. They are mysteriously drawn to that special shop called the 'C' Shop! It has such a village atmosphere, family oriented and that appealed to us, too, and no railroad tracks between us and the beach.
What makes this Cottage unique
We liked the charm of the home. It has the unique flavor of old Birch Bay, very calming with Alaska Yellow Cedar on the Living Room ceiling and Western Red Cedar on the Living Room walls.

Wonderful time for our Family!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this warm cottage and hope to return again and again. We would highly recommend it. If you're concerned at all about renting a place that is miles from any owners or managers, this place will give you peace of mind as the owners are right in the neighborhood, just knowing they're nearby helped us relax. Everything is there you'll need. The beach is a straight shot from the cottage, we really enjoyed how close it is, you just walk out the door and go. Can't say enough good about the place, obviously well cared for.
Lots of space!
We rented Seashell Cottage for a Christmas gathering so we needed lots of beds, which was a primary selling point. A cafe with espresso was a short walk away (although closed for the holiday!) The cottage is old and a bit funky but with up-to-date appliances and a fully equipped kitchen. It is very close to the beach but too cold to enjoy in December! The owner was very helpful when we had questions. Parking for four cars and arrangements were made for the fifth car when it came for dinner.
Comfortable and charming
The cottage is lovely, well equipped and comfortable. There was ample seating for 8 of us to hang out in the living room. The owners set up the cottage beds just how we wanted them. They handled any issues- few and minor- quickly. The beach was close and easily accessible.
Very disappointing - no privacy from owner
The house was ok, but right from the start we felt monitored by the owners. My family, including my elderly father and my siblings age 50+, were all were appalled by the lack of privacy, whether we sat out front or on the side patio. A guest arrived and was still getting hugs and unloading when the owners came over to tell him to move his truck, and that wasn't the only time they watched us and came over to enforce rules. We have never encountered anything like this before in Birch Bay in the 40+ years we have been coming here. This is the first negative review I have left for any of the Birch Bay places we have stayed at. I do not recommend staying here unless they promise not to stay across the street.
One of the benefits of staying at Cottages By The Beach is the owners are nearby and available. Unfortunately, the above guests did not expect staff on site and brought two pets to a no pets property. The guests also hooked up their RV to our RV hookup, after inquiring about the cost of the service. The guest was billed for the RV hookup and charged a fee for violating house rules for pets.
Very cute cottage - AMAZING location
This was perfect for our family gathering. Good for kids and adults. Kelvin & Patti have done a great job updating it so far.
Thank you for your wonderful comments. We enjoyed having you stay at Seashell Cottage!
We recently had a flood at our Adult Family Home and needed to evacuate immediately. Patti and Kelvin were so gracious. They allowed us to move in immediately and were so sympathetic to our situation. They provided us with cinnamon rolls and were available to help with anything we needed. They went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable despite the unfortunate situation that brought us there. We will forever be grateful to them for their hospitality and would definitely recommend their cottage.
We were so delighted we could help you! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting your residents!
Our restaurants and cafes are right along the beach and within easy walking distance, Birch Bay state park has beach and forest trails, The Water slides are always a favorite, Eagles & herons within sight and sound of the cottage, many of our guests plan day trips to Vancouver and Victoria, B.C., our Canadian guests love to shop. Lynden is a Dutch themed town with cafe's and shops. Sand castle contests, 4th of July activities and Polar Bear Plunge are some highlights of the year. Birch Bay is an Audubon Birding area. Some of our guests plan whale watching expeditions or salmon fishing charters, Birch Bay is noted for clamming and crabbing and when the season is on, we have even been known to bring fresh crab to our guests!
