Family Home Recaptured, Now Shared with Others: In 1919, my great-grandfather, Erich Menger, and his brother Rudolph, purchased 560 acres in the hill country. In 1922, Erich and his wife, Lydia, bought Rudolph’s share and built a charming rock cottage. My great-grandparents raised registered Angora goats, cattle and sheep, and ran a dairy. Together, they spent nearly 30 years at the ranch. During my childhood, our family harvested our Christmas trees, camped, hunted and gathered for picnics with extended family at the ranch. We swam in the cistern full of fresh rainwater or we rode on the tailgate down to the pool made by a dam in the Helotes Creek. But in 1973, our family sold the property. I vowed that someday I would buy the ranch back. In 2000, my sister drove past and saw the sale sign. Most of the land had been subdivided but the remaining 7 acres contained the original ranch house, a smaller cottage, carriage house and barns. In December 2000, my husband and I fulfilled my dream of recovering the ranch!
People come to our cottage to be close to Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, UTSA and other major attractions but other types of people who love our place include historians, architects, authors, novelists, naturalists, bird watchers, bicyclists, botanists, conservationists, horse people and tree lovers.

Hospitality a Menger-Klar Family Tradition: For more than 100 years, my family has been known in San Antonio for their hospitality and generosity. One ancestor, Rudolph Menger and his wife, Babette, along with his in-laws, William Menger (a different line of the Menger family) operated the famous Menger Hotel. My great-grandfather, Emil Klar, was a butcher who specalized in home-killed meats and “the sausage with a flavor.” Opi, as he was known in the German tradition, gave meat to hungry neighbors during the Great Depression until he could no longer run his business. My grandfather, Roland Klar, along with my grandmother, Floy (nee Menger) Klar, brewed homemade beer to share with their salon of many friends. Today, my cousin Erich Menger is one of the most sought-after caterers in town. Now my husband and I continue that tradition of hospitality with executive and vacation rentals of our historic family properties known as the Menger Cottages. Willkommen!

We've stayed in the Carriage House and now the "Cottage". The term "Cottage" is misnomer, because really is a full house. Very enjoyable; we just relax and hang out in the yard. Old Helotes is just down the street, with great ice cream place. Is conveniently close to San Antonio, midway to some hot spots my son enjoys. Is also pet friendly, so our dog gets to come too. Great spot!
Loved the aura of the older home and the serenity of the property
Lovely time. I wish we had a few more days. We had everything we needed and my family enjoyed the home and location. The dogs loved the yard. Thank you Linda for being so accommodating. Enjoyed our time with our neighbors in the carriage house! Made for wonderful company by the fire pit. :)
Fit our needs perfectly. Very rustic on the outside with modern amenities inside.
The bed in master BR was a little uncomfortable for my wife but, we didn't try the others and got thru the 5 nights just fine. Fenced in area for the dog was fantastic. He loved going out to look for the horses. The cleaning could have been a little better and the grill needs to be replaced but, overall we would definitely stay there again. Very quiet, safe and relaxing location!
great start to the summer
This house was perfect for my family of four. The property was beautiful and we loved feeding the horses each evening. We will be back!
Country life for friends or families.
Get getaway! Nice and relaxing. Go with friends or the family. AWESOME
Ranch cottage and grounds
2 sons, a grandson, my husband and I stayed two nights at the cottage and enjoyed it very much. It was so nice to be in the country . We are from Minnesota and were visiting our son who lives in Dallas, so rented a car and made the drive to San Antonio. The horses and chickens were fun to watch and we enjoyed the porches with the rocking chairs and swing. We would have liked to stay longer but the boys needed to be back for work and college. We did drive into San Antonio to see the Alamo and Riverwalk, but it was spring break and St. Patricks weekend and very crowded! We went to El Chapperalle for dinner on Friday evening and that was great. We fixed 2 meals at the cottage and found the kitchen to be fully stocked with all that we needed. We would definitely recommend this vacation retreat to everyone!

You can tour wineries in nearby Comfort and Sisterdale. Take expedition trips to Bandera, Medina Lake, Boerne, Kerrville and Fredericksburg. Nature lovers will appreciate Government Canyon State Natural Area, the Helotes Creek Nature Center and our own backyard. For the kids, Fiesta Texas is 13 miles and Seaworld is just 15 miles from our home.
