About Dorothee

VRBO Alert: after many years with vrbo, we are letting the subscription lapse because of changes made by Expedia/HomeAway. This listing will disappear on Feb 5, 2018. If you want to reserve please google Wildhorse+ heisenberghager and you will find our website and contact info.

We enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and downhill skiing and wanted to be in the mountains, ready to do the activities without a long drive to get there. Photography is also our hobby, and so it had to be a place with beautiful views and sights. On our website you can see some of the wildflower pictures we took and some of the winter pictures.

Dorothee purchased this house in 2011

Why Dorothee chose Mount Crested Butte

Mt Crested Butte is a beautiful valley (we think it’s more attractive than Aspen or Snowmass) and we wanted to be in a quiet place on the mountain but with many amenities that make getting home at night a pleasure. The skiing and snowboarding is world class (the second X-Games were held in Mt Crested Butte), as is the mountain-biking (invented here). Mt. Crested Butte is also the official wildflower capital of Colorado.

For skiing we wanted to be close to the slopes, so you can just walk 5 minutes to the Gold Link lift. For the summer we wanted it to be a little quieter so it’s nice that the lift does not run then.

There are so many things you could do every day that even when the weather’s not great, you can find something to do. We also wanted something that would accommodate our 3 extended families and kids, so we created a space for the cousins to all hang out together and play (Wii and games) and watch TV/DVDs (the bunk bed room).

Our dining room table expands to fit 15 people and we like to cook, so the kitchen was important. One of our favorite places in the summer is the deck that we enjoy in the morning with a blanket and a cup of coffee, and the evening with a glass of wine as we watch the sun go down over the East River valley.

What makes this house unique

We added a Digital Piano in the queen bedroom which makes it an ideal place for people who like to play for fun but don’t get a chance to do so in their “regular” lives as much as they would like. Wildhorse is the closest housing to the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab in Gothic, so if you are visiting someone there for the summer, it’s as close as you can get (3 miles up the road).

The free shuttle to Crested Butte leaves from Mountaineer Square to the intersection of Prospect Drive and Gothic Road (approximately 1500 feet from our doorstep) in the winter.

Blue sky and great skiing in Colorado!

VRBO Bear stayed here

Jan 28, 2015

This spacious 4 bed 4.5 bath home far exceeded my expectations. The home is located at the bottom of Prospect Lift on Mount Crested Butte, perfect for our six day ski trip. The home was stocked with more than enough beds, extra mattresses, and bedding to accommodate my guests. In total we were able to host fifteen people! Each day started early, waking up to a gorgeous Colorado sunrise provided through the oversized east facing windows. We cooked nearly every meal in the spacious upstairs kitchen and dining area. There were plenty of serving dishes, utensils, and cooking accessories to prepare various meals for all fifteen guests: chili beans, meatballs, salads, spiked apple cider, fajitas, the works! For my friends who skied, we took less than a five minute hike to the slopes. The home was close enough to the lift that we could even ski home to make a sandwich for lunch. For my friends who did not ski, they enjoyed watching movies on the big screen TV and catching up on a little R&R. They played games and built a puzzle provided in the home. A few of them took the shuttle that’s located at the end of the drive into the town of Crested Butte and enjoyed pizza from a local restaurant, and an oxygen treatment at an oxygen bar. The shuttle service ran every hour from morning until late night, making it perfect for all of my friends to come and leave as they pleased. This home couldn’t have been more perfect. The town of Crested Butte is a true mountain town, and was the perfect getaway. Dorothee, the property owner was more than accommodating. She quickly responded to any questions we had before, during, and after the trip. I highly recommend this spacious mountain home in Crested Butte, CO, the various activities are endless!

Views and Amenities galore

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this house for a birthday trip with 11 adults for 5 nights. The house was perfect, even for this large of a group of adults. The house was easy to find and the instructions for accessing the house were simple. Everything was clean and well maintained and there were plenty of extras (chairs, pillows, linens, etc). We only went out to dinner 2 times because the kitchen was so easy to cook in and after a long day of skiing, staying in by the fire sounded great! Access to the lifts was also extremely easy. You could walk or park your car close to the base of Goldlink lift and ride the mountain all day! All in all, I was extremely happy with our stay and recommend this property for anyone looking at a trip to Crested Butte.

Well equipped mountain-view home with great owner

  • 5 of 5

This home is very spacious - the bedrooms and baths are generously sized. There's everything you'll need for your stay. The home is nicely maintained and clean. And the views from the common space (dining and family room) and bedrooms are fabulous. Watch for wildlife out the windows. Both the sunrise hitting the mountain peaks and the colorful sunsets are spectacular from the dining and family room. We stayed during the winter so we also could see people out on the cross country ski trails and the snowcats making their nightly grooming runs right from the family room. If you are skiing, there are multiple ways to get around...it's a quick run down the road to park at the base of the mountain or you can take the free shuttle bus from the stop that's about 1/4 of a mile from the house. Either is easy and convenient. This was the first time I had skied at Crested Butte and was happily surprised by the terrain and grooming...and that it was not busy! No lift lines! The town of Crested Butte was also bigger than I expected and had quite a few restaurant choices. There's even a small movie theatre (something not always available in ski towns). The owner was very responsive to my questions and even provided helpful info about grocery shopping and discount lift tickets. I would recommend this house (and the owner) to my friends and family.

Amazing home with a wonderful view!

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about this house and it's locations. We slept 15 adults more than comfortably. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and more to cook every night during our week long trip. Every room had its own bathroom which made this very convenient for everyone to get ready. There was a shuttle in walking distance to the house that would take you to town which made skiing and errands very convenient. Crested Butte is absolutely beautiful and this house made it that much better. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had before, during, and after the stay.

I would recommend this house to anyone and definitly plan on returning.
