This is a house rental only. Come and relax in a lakefront paradise. Lake views from all bedrooms and sunroom. Enjoy dinner overlooking the lake and walking along the beach afterwards. You can sit and watch the sunset either on the porch on the patio with a fire to keep you warm. Watch the stars come out and count the falling ones. Be sure and look out for the eagles soaring along the lakefront. Listen to the birds as they sing their songs to the waking day. There are plenty of trees to sit under and picnic or just rest. Take a nature walk through our paths and check out the wildlife. If you are lucky you might see a deer, definitely go tracking and find their hoof prints as they walked by.
For the hunters in your life, there is plenty of hunting areas less than a mile from our Lodge. If you are lucky enough to bag one, we are happy to get a photo for our wall. My husband loves to hunt, but I think he enjoys the time out watching the deer instead of shooting them! He rarely brings one back, but always happy to have spent time sitting out in the cold watching.
For those who love to eat and not want to cook, be sure to check out the many restaurants available on the island. There is something for everyones palate! Dessert is always a favorite and the ice cream here is wonderful. Too make up for the dessert a bike ride is always on the list. Ride down to Glacial Grooves or over to the State Park. There are many historical sites the island has to offer.
Our lodge has four bedrooms. The master has a king size bed and separate bathroom. There is also a queen size bed, another king size bed and then two twin beds. We also have a sunroom that has a day bed if you happen to need a nap overlooking the lake. A full kitchen is provided for those who want to cook.
One thing I need to mention, please bring water socks for swimming in the lake. The lake bottom is limestone and has pepples and occasional shells that cause slipping in the water.
We added a treehouse! Photos have been added. We allow 8 years and older in the treehouse with adult supervision. This is mainly for adults but the kids want to check it out and we allow that. Under 8 it is probably not safe. Just ask us if you have questions. Safety is our concern.
We do not allow weddings, reunions, or bachelor/bachelorette groups. Our home is for enjoyment and recreation without disturbing surrounding homes. We are located on the property as well because of rules set for our renting. If anything goes wrong or you have questions, we are available.

Our Lodge was built in 1970's by Dr. Charles and Mrs. Kathryn Herndon, David's parents. He & his brother grew up every summer next door at Kay's parents home. Building here was just another step in having a place for the family to share time together and with the family when on the island. David is a Burn Surgeon for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas and his wife, Rose is a volunteer there. They travel as often as possible to visit the family and island. They have three children: Heather Herndon Suhey, Charles Christopher Herndon and Benjamin David Herndon. We have two new additions to our family; Stephanie Bruno Herndon and Steven Suhey recently married to Chris and Heather. The photos on the living room wall are generations of the Herndon's and Blair families. Along the kitchen walls are our family photos. We enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, nature walks through our orchard and watching the deer as they walk by and eat from our feeders. The most enjoyment is sitting on the patio and reading a good book with a glass of wine.
Rose Herndon purchased this house in 1998
My husband grew up here and next door was a family home. We enjoy coming up and sharing fun times with other family members and friends. Our place is secluded in the woods and therefore no traffic so children can play freely. The fishing and hunting is wonderful as David will attest to!
Waking up taking our coffee out to the lake and watch the sunrise. Having breakfast on the porch and watching the eagles soar and birds sing. We enjoy taking long walks and cutting the grass! Working in my garden when we are there is very therapeutic and relaxing. The swim in the lake after working is wonderful!
My husband and six of our friends from Ford Motor Company Engine Plant #1 booked Memorial Day weekend, and we were NOT disappointed! We met Rose upon our arrival, and were given a tour of the property which is beautiful, and absolutely gorgeous. It's like a private tucked away island, ON THE ISLAND. Your front yard view from every bedroom is THE LAKE and there is a brand new tree house built for leisure. We spent our mornings up there with coffee, and the resident pooch, Shadow, who we fell in love with all weekend.
Everything we needed was provided and Rose and Carmen were incredibly accommodating. They spent some quality time with us, explaining the history of the island and the area. We also traveled into town (about ten minutes away) in one vehicle for evening fun. There is a kayak, a canoe and fishing equipment provided. We loved every minute there and will be returning next spring/summer. Thanks to Rose for her gracious hospitality and friendship. Such a sweet family!
Wonderful week with our entire family. Grandchildren loved collecting rocks on the beach. Our children enjoyed kayaking, canoeing and biking the island. Wonderful place to relax and enjoy the view of the lake. Our hosts were outstanding - if we needed anything, they would provide it for you. Only thing you need is your food and clothing - everything else was provided.
We had seen the outside of the Lodge before and hoped that the inside matched what we had seen--We were not disappointed! The bedrooms each provided a view of the lake and the sunrise each day. There was adequate seating for a large gathering--we had a birthday party there with extra guests. The amenities provided and all the little extras made this a very enjoyable vacation. Rose and her aunt Carmen proved to be excellent hosts and provided extra help for the surprise B-day party! We liked this place so well that we have already booked next year's vacation!
This home was perfect for our family getaway. Plenty of room for six adults and three small children. Clean, private, easy access, plenty of shade and sun areas to sit and relax. All bedrooms face the lake. The sunrises are fantastic. Just sixty feet from the lake. Nice level, well-maintained yard to play volleyball, kickball, any yard games. This home is just like it appears on the website. The only surprises were pleasant ones. We enjoyed using the furnished canoe, kayak, (life jackets provided) and six person golf cart. Unlimited firewood for evening and late night patio campfires. We grilled several evening meals. We also fished, (caught rock bass) hiked some nature areas and biked the roads and trails. A large beachfront tree house will be finished in July. There are plenty of restaurants on the island if you don't want to cook. Check out the Winery, the Brewery, the glacial grooves and the quarry. Rose was very accommodating. Every question was answered and every request was granted. Thanks to Rose, this was probably the easiest rental process we have ever experienced. We have already recommended this home to some friends. We will certainly be planning our return trip for next year. Thanks Rose!
Thank you very much Rose for sharing your home with us. As you know, I traveled with two elderly people and two people with developmental disabilities and your home was accommodating to every need. We enjoyed walks along the shore and fires in the evening by the lake. These memories will stay with us indefinitely.
We had 7 people there (including a 4 year old) and it was perfect. Rose and Carmen could not have been easier to work with. The property is beyond beautiful. Secluded, but easy to get to, and close to everything you want to do. It is the side of the island where the water is almost always smooth and you have great beach access, plus swings to sit in and admire the lake.. They are even building a wonderful treehouse with perfect views of the lake. This is THE place to stay, you will feel at home, and have plenty of room for board games, beach s'mores toasting, etc. the sun room alone is enough to come for. Great, great house and wonderful owner operators.
We have the Glacial grooves that are a must see on the island.
