Absolute Oceanfront Suite with Spectacular Kona Sunsets

Bedrooms Studio
Space 600 sq. ft.
Property type studio
Minimum Stay 1 - 10 nights

About the property

Large oceanfront studio with an extended lanai, sleeps 2

Kona Magic Sands is nestled between Magic Sands (La'Aloa) beach and Pahoehoe Beach Park. The unit was fully gutted and remodeled in June 2011.

As you open the front door and step inside the unit (303), you realize how clean and modern the unit is. You walk to the glass wall and open the doors to the lanai. You step outside and hear the ocean, you see the waves and the colorful fish swimming...maybe you see a few turtles swimming next to some snorkelers. You look at the 180 degrees of ocean at your feet and you realize that this is why you rented this unit. You sit outside at the dining table or enjoy a cold drink at the bar table/chairs as you watch the sunset with camera in hand. The palm trees dance with the tradewinds and you decide to sleep with the lanai doors open and screen doors closed so that you can hear the ocean.

The next morning, you grind your Kona coffee and brew a fresh pot and enjoy another day in paradise. You spot more colorful fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and in the winter, humpback whales; you might decide to get to see them up close and go snorkel/swim at the beach next door.

For dinner and after a day of sighseeing, you grill your dinner on the gas BBQ while you take a dip in the pool. You may choose to eat on the dining tables under the pavillion. At night, the quiet central air conditionner and stainless steel modern ceiling fans keep you cool. The updated kitchen with the granite countertops and stainless steel appliances help you create great frozen drinks or delicious dinners. Dimmable track lighting and under cabinet lights set the mood for an enjoyable evening. Large flat screen TV, in-wall speakers, state of the art receiver/DVD/CD player, iPod plug/play, cable TV, new furniture, bedding, towels, etc. add to your comfort. You can even do your laundry in the unit's washer and dryer and go home with clean clothes. There is a free assigned parking stall near the entrance to the condo, so you never have to look for a parking spot.

We are located on the famous Alii drive, where you can go for a walk/run. There is a public bus that stops in front of the condo and goes between the Kailua Pier (less than 4 miles away) and Keahou shopping center (2 miles away). Kailua town offers many restaurants/bars, and stores for shopping. Keohou has a few restaurants, a supermarket, drug store, cinemas, book store and more.

Enjoy hanging out at the beach or watch the hula dancers practice their routines in the park. Keahou offers daily free Hawaiian cultural activities, including ukulele lessons, making flower leis or watching a hula performances.

Whatever you do, you will have a great time on the Big Island.

We request that you do no re-arrange the furniture inside or outside.

If you choose to book our unit, we thank you in advance and request that you provide a mobile/cell phone number so that we may be able to contact you in case of an emergency.

About Sonia

We have been visiting Kailua-Kona for the past 20 years and finally decided to buy at KMS where we always stayed. The third floor unit had everything that we wanted for. So we bought it in 2010, gutted and remodeled the place to our liking. We hope you enjoy your stay and make many memories like we have. Kona is paradise for us and we are glad that we can share it with you. Aloha!

Sonia purchased this studio in 2010

Why Sonia chose Kailua-Kona

We love the location. We have stayed in KMS every time that we visited the Big Island. We have done so for the past 21 years. We enjoy the beach next door and the fact that there is so much to do here or just hang out and relax.

What makes this studio unique

The location can't be beat. The view from the lanai, the fish and turtles, the sunsets! You have to see it to believe it.

“Kona Magic Sands 303”

5 of 5 starsReviewed July 26, 2013

Paradise on a budget!

I love the Big Island and especially Kona; fell in love with it 40 years ago on my honeymoon. I dive and for many years dove with Dive Makai, but unfortunately the original family owned business was bought out by a mainlander who drove it into the ground. I have tried Jacks and they are good but I would also highly recommend Big Island Divers (same dive sites for less).I personally like to rent condos and have tried a variety of properties over the years. I have stayed at Kona Magic Sands a couple of times before and always liked the location. There aren’t a lot of beaches in Kona and this property is right next door to one of the nicest ones. This year I splurged and rented one of them (Unit 303). It is on the top, 3rd, floor so you have a large open lanai and you’re practically standing over the ocean. Sitting out on the lanai you can watch dolphins and turtles at almost any time. The constant surf provides a pleasant backdrop and you can see an amazing amount of reef fish just by looking down into the water, we call it porch diving.

There is large table and umbrella for al fresco dining, a lounge chair and some other seating out there so it is all very comfortable.

The unit inside is very nice, everything looks new. It is kind of laid out like a large hotel suite, very roomy. My wife really really liked the place (she has not always appreciated some of my previous choices).

There is a big screen TV, which I never turned on, but I did use the WiFi all the time which was pretty fast (looks like a cable modem)

The kitchen appliances, like everything else, looked new and we seemed to find everything we needed. We brought our Costco card and packed the fridge, so we pretty much ate in, or packed the fridge, so we pretty much ate in, or packed lunches to go most of the time. The farmers market is on Wednesdays and great place to get local food cheap. BTW the fish at Costco is really good but I think the best fish can be bought at Safeway which is near the local Walmart.

There is a restaurant on the property, although I didn't try it this trip. Tried it years ago and it was okay but it looks like it is under new management now. Something to try next year.

There was a washer/dryer in the unit which as divers came is real handy; because after a dive almost everything comes back wet.

Communication with the owner was quick and easy. My wife wants to re-rent the unit.

Enjoyed our stay so much. Spent many lovely hours watching dolphins and whales from the lanai including a mother and calf humpback for about 45 minutes! Unit is nicely updated and well taken care of. Thank you Sonia!

Owner's Response: Thank you Malinda for the review. This is a beautiful time of the year to watch the whales. Being able to see them from the lanai, with the pleasure of a cup of coffee or drink in hand, beats having to get on a charter boat to enjoy the whales. Sincerely, Sonia

Great oceanfront location in outdated condo complex

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this unit while celebrating our 15-year wedding anniversary on the Big Island. Overall, we would give this rental 4 stars. The unit was cozy, but pretty much as anticipated. All of the essential supplies were provided by the owners. The lanai/oceanfront view is the big selling point of this unit. The one negative we experienced with the unit is the presence of small ants throughout the condo, especially in the bathroom. We did very little cooking/eating in the condo, yet ants were seen in multiple rooms and just a nuisance (not what we expected on our paradise vacation). We were less impressed with the condition/location of the Kona Magic Sands condo complex and would give it a 2-star rating. It is very close to Ali'i Drive and anyone staying here should expect traffic noise during most hours of the day. It is also next to a public beach which attracts a variety of different users (e.g. tourists, locals and transients) and associated traffic to the area. The Kona Magic Sands could also do a better job of improving the sight distance at the entrance to the parking lot. The visibility was limited and at certain times of the day, it was difficult turning left towards Kona. In summary, we felt like we got good value with this particular unit; however, we would look at other rental options/condos for our next trip to the Big Island.

Amazing Sunsets

  • 5 of 5

The is an ideal unit for a couple. The overall condition is new and well maintained. The Lanai is huge and a major plus. This unit, along with the 3 that are next to it, are the best in the building. It does indeed have AC which we really did not need due to being oceanfront. Pay close attention to that because many rentals do not have AC. It has a solid entertainment center. The bar area has a wine fridge and all of the accoutrements for serving your favorite beverages.

The beach next door had some pretty intense surf due to it being January, so we did not get in the water much. But it as very convenient having a beach to hang on right there. The location is convenient for exploring, and the weather on the Kona side was definitely better than Hilo.

The owner was very helpful and quick to respond. The welcome bottle of wine was a nice touch. I would definitely return to this rental if I come back.

A couple of minor things to note are that there is no toaster, only a couple of small pans, and a small 4 cup coffee maker. I found that this contrasted what was an otherwise well equipped kitchen. However, I will stress that those things were minor, and the overall décor and newness far outweighed the small inconveniences.

Keep in mind that this is an older building, and part of it is closed off for renovation. That does not have any bearing on the condo itself though, and you can’t see any of it from there anyway.

The best oceanfront condo ever! Thanks Sonia!

  • 5 of 5

Property was exactly as described, very clean, and you cannot get any closer to the ocean without being in the ocean :)

Popular beach next door was great - no need to fight for a parking spot!

Spectacular ocean view, fantastic beach and access, well equipped and quiet surroundings

  • 4 of 5

We felt immedialty relaxed from the moment we arrived. The unit is charming and lanai is exceptional with fantastic ocean views. A very nice private pool and patio/lawn area right on the water awaits you below. The adjacent Magic Sands Beach is perfect for sunning, swimining, surfing and snorkeling with plenty of aquatic and human creatures to keep you entertained.

Sonia was more than helpful and very responsive to our questions prior to and even during our stay. Her home is very comfortable, intimate and the building is old Kona classic. Understated in its simplicity. Super convient location no matter which direction your travels take you. Can't wait to visit again.

"Absolute Oceanfront"- We enjoyed our stay.

  • 3 of 5

Our ten day Dec. 2017 stay at "Absolute Oceanfront" allowed us to be right on the beach in a third floor condo. There is no elevator so be prepared to carry bags up three flights of stairs. No problem for us. It is a smaller complex, located right on the beach. We loved hearing the ocean sounds all night long. The view was beautiful. The location, good, and even though this property is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kona, there was a lot of construction and "banging" taking place at this property. Also, a lot of outside street noise. There is a beautiful pool at this property backing up to the ocean which was a real deciding factor to stay here, however, we could not really use it. The pool water was freezing! Also, the water inside our unit had very limited hot water. Showering, particularly for the second person, was more of a cold shower. The sliding doors leading out to the balcony would not lock properly and no safe to protect valuables. All in all, we liked this property but expected more for the price.

Owner's Response: Hi Christina, Happy New Year and thank you for the review. We appreciate you taking the time to submit one. Yes, our condo is on the 3rd floor as stated in the description and yes, there isn't an elevator in the complex as this is an older condominium. Hawaii laws no longer permit building on the ocean side and have set backs, so our condominium is grandfathered in. Your review mentions the complex, the lack of an elevator (not listed in our amenities), the street noise (we have no control over it), the construction (almost complete for an onsite restaurant/bar owned and managed by the Kona Brewing Company owners) and an unheated pool (no control over it. Same temperature as the Ocean). Most hotels don't have heated pools unless you are in some of the resorts in Kohala and you pay their nightly rate. Your comments are about the complex and not our unit. Our condo amenities list does not include a safe nor do we claim to have one for the same reasons that I stated in my email to you. The shower has a 12 gallon hot water heater, that is enough for 2 people. Were you able to use the control (pictures in the Welcome Book) that shows you how to use the shower to increase/decrease the hot water? You mentioned that you expected more for the price, I am sorry that you feel that way. I guess you like to see the glass as half empty versus half full. You stayed in a great location, as oceanfront as you can get without getting wet. There is an assigned parking space (no need to look for parking space or pay for valet parking). The beach is next door (no need to drive anywhere). Free WiFi, no charge for the Air Conditioning (yes, some condos charge for that). The heavy duty washer and dryer (we provide laundry detergent unless you are allergic to our Tide brand) are at your service to make sure that you go home with clean clothes. We provide you with beach chairs/towels/cooler to make sure that you can take your food with you as you tour the island. We provide you with a full kitchen and a nice bottle of wine to welcome you after a long flight from the mainland. I hope you enjoyed celebrating Christmas in Kona, one of the most expensive time of the year to be visiting the Big Island. I am sure that we could have given you more for the nightly rate that you paid, but we feel that our amenities, the cleanliness of our unit, providing you with what we show in our pictures justify our rate. With Aloha.
