Down the road from Fairfax and San Anselmo, this is a gem of an artists' home, charming, sparkling and sunny in a wonderful part of Northern California, just 30 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, doorstep into San Francisco.
The house has white wooden floorboards throughout, stunning views, that all-important heated pool, and very lovely hot-tub nestling in the oaks. You can't help but feel happy here, a home from home. We're surrounded by trees so the house is exceptionally quiet and private. In the summer, it is very hard to leave the house which feels like a mini-resort - the feel and aesthetic is that of a beach-house-on-a-hillside/art-studio-that-people-happen-to-live-in:) We have sun all day, all summer long as we are in a micro-climate (so we have sun while San Francisco is covered in fog).
On our doorstep is the Open-Space of Marin, famous for hiking & mountain-biking. 45 mins from the gorgeous beaches of Stinson & Pt. Reyes National Park, half an hour to the Golden Gate bridge, 1hr from Napa Valley and 5 mins from downtown Fairfax & San Anselmo. It's a perfect place to have as a base for exploring the region, or as an escape from San Francisco. Best suited for a family with 2-4 kids, or a couple (we're not renting it as a party home).
Fully equipped kitchen and sunny outdoor living, with big family table on deck overlooking pool and valley below.

We are artists and have 2 teenage girls. We're South African, lived in London for many years, and we're lucky enough to have moved to sunny CA five years ago.
The Owner purchased this house in 2011
This is our primary home. Moved here because we wanted to feel on holiday all the time. We travel a lot.
Beautiful setting, gorgeous light and a gem of a home. Large heated pool and hot-tub nestling in the trees. Close to San Francisco, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, beaches, Napa.
My family of four just spent the Christmas holidays at this charming, wonderful house. And even though it rained almost every day of our visit, the weather could not put a damper on our trip, largely because we absolutely loved staying in this house. (My husband joked that he hoped the owners wouldn't mind a lodger... because he was not planning to leave). The owners opened their home to us as if we were their close friends. And my daughter was so inspired by their art that she came home and tried to replicate it. More than anything, though, we just knew that we were staying in the home of a happy, warm family (odd as that sounds given that we never met them!). I am a Bay Area native and know Marin County well. You cannot beat the location for a true "Marin" experience: close to the city, but an absolute retreat. Best things: the views at sunrise and sunset; their extensive, interesting library and art collection; relaxing in the hot tub on a rainy evening; driving the "back way" to Pt. Reyes. Also, the proximity to open space trails means you can hike in the morning with views of the SF skyline and the East Bay, then make into the city for lunch in Chinatown. The neighborhood is great for running, too. Truly, this house (and its location) exceeded our expectations.
My family and I spent a wonderful month of July in this fantastic house in San Anselmo. We wanted to be near San Francisco but in the surrenders. We could not have found a better place.
The house is beautiful. It is decorated with works of art made by the owners. They are really nice. We spent hours trying to choose which one we liked most and we were not able. We loved all.
It is great to have breakfast in the kitchen or in the dock, depending on the weather. Views are extraordinary. The swimming pool is very nice and my children spent long time in it. When you are in it you don’t need to go anywhere else.
All my family agree that these holidays have been one of the best we’ve ever had.
Artists' home with one of the best views in Marin. Seeing the sunrise from the balcony in front of the kitchen or the Moon rising over Mount Tamalpais is priceless.
We're from Germany and spent two summers in this nice and individual house and just loved it. The owners are very friendly and have been helpful in every case. Too bad that we cant come over from Europe to stay in the house again this year.
We spent a GREAT week in this awesome home over Xmas. We were visiting family in San Anselmo but also wanted a base for getting into San Francisco - approx 25 mins to the Golden Gate Bridge. Everything was easy - the house was clean, fully equipped and the hot tub is really special nestling in the trees. The location is an ideal combination of feeling like the countryside, including the beaches and Point Reyes National Seashore - but close enough to San Francisco. Strongly recommend!
We stayed at this charming house for two weeks in Spring 2013 and loved every minute.
What a perfect location - tree-covered mountains in every direction - also extremely sunny and peaceful.
The Birdhouse is a well-loved home, the joie de vivre of its artist owners shines from every object. We spent many happy afternoons browsing their extensive library of travel and art books and could not have felt more at home. The kids loved the extremely well-stocked crafts cupboard, toys, books and games...and of course the pool.
The living here is simple, not fancy, but we were after the simple pleasures. Having the cool bohemian town of Fairfax down the road was a huge bonus. We want to move there! The local markets offer top organic food, so we had lovely fresh family meals on the deck, there are amazing hikes a couple of minute's away, constant sunshine, a huge and WARM pool. And the spa was just perfect, private and surrounded by trees.
As we wanted to get away from the city life (being from London), we really appreciated how the house and backyard has maximum privacy and quiet. Some days we just stayed home, we felt like we had our own private spa resort (and we did!)
Thank you for making your home so welcoming and comfortable! As a young family it was the perfect base for us and we have already recommended to our friends to stay there.
We had a very comfortable, enjoyable stay- longer stay while in between houses (sold our old house, new one wasn't ready yet). We loved the pool on warmer days and the cozy fireplace with the large couch for rainy days. (we had a longer stay and enjoyed warm and cold weather!) The views are gorgeous: enjoying breakfast and a cup of coffee at the kitchen table or out on the wrap around deck, watching the sunrise and the birds were definitely a highlight. Another favorite- the hot tub! Near the house, but set back under a large oak tree, it was one of the most peaceful spots we have been able to enjoy in awhile! The owners were helpful and very responsive to questions.
Very close to various hiking trails and open space and less than 5 minutes from both the towns of San Anselmo and Fairfax. Very close to West Marin, 30 minutes to San Francisco.
The house was even better than the description and pictures!! Clean, orderly and spacious. Artists' home with charming decor. The kitchen, pool and spa were especially enjoyable. We would recommend the property with enthusiasm. It is equally good for family enjoyment or entertaining.
Marin County - known for the great outdoors life; hiking, walking, biking, surfing. Great food and wine and scenery, and 30 mins from San Francisco.
