About Merrie

Our names are Darrel & Merrie, we met in Williams & have been married 43 years. We have 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren. Merrie grew up in the area, and has always called it 'home', she loves the mountains, pines and the quiet pace of the location.

Merrie purchased this house in 2007

Why Merrie chose Canyon Country & Northeast

We purchased the land in 2002 and dreamed of the day we would see our cabin there on the property. We drew the plans and sub-contracted the construction beginning in 2005, the home was, for the most part, completed in 2007. We have enjoyed the process, and have been doing some finishing touches since then. We are confident you will enjoy the property, and make many happy memories there.

What makes this house unique

There is a peacefulness you'll feel when staying at our home, and the proximity to the Grand Canyon, Williams, Bearizona, The Grand Canyon Railway, Flagstaff and Sedona makes our home perfect for daily outings taking in all the sites. We enjoy taking the family to the cabin to enjoy the cool weather in summer. The smell of the pines, relaxing around the fire pit and taking walks in the forest, along with the occasional sightings of the deer, elk and antelope in the area are a welcome change of pace. The Kaibab squirrels that live in the neighborhood enjoy the handouts and are very entertaining. Winters are beautiful with the fresh snow, sledding and holidays in front of the fireplace with the scent of cedar wood, freshly baked cookies, coffee and hot chocolate. Christmas in Williams is a sight to see, with the lighting of the huge Christmas tree, and boarding the Polar Express is a joy for the kiddies, young and old. Bearizona Wildlife Park and The Deer Farm are a must see, near Williams, only a few miles away. (Sorry, we do not host pets in consideration of those with allergies)

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a gorgeous Getaway. I definitely recommend this lovely chalet for your next trip to the Grand Canyon or the Flagstaff area. A cozy home in either winter or summer. We found it to have a lovely well-stocked kitchen...perfect for our family getaway. The living & dining areas are very spacious and our group of 8 was easily accommodated. Thanks for a lovely time....we'll definitely be returning.

Our beautifully decorated 1765 sf home on an acre of pines offers 2 King bedrooms, a Queen bed and a twin bed in the loft, a queen sleeper sofa in the living room as well as a playpen/crib, air mattress and extra pillows. We provide all linens, kitchenware and utensils, some spices, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and spiced cider. Spend time in Williams shopping the unique stores there, taking a walk in the cool pine scented air or relax on the porch. Pine wood can be found on the lot for the outdoor fire pit, and wood for the fireplace can be purchased in Williams at Safeway or Circle K. In the back yard there is a large play set, and we are planning to add a horseshoe pit and additional shrubbery/landscaping next spring. Please come and enjoy yourselves here at The Gateway Cottage.

Great vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

The home is beautiful and the owners are very responsive. There was a wifi problem and even though the owner was on vacation herself, she took time to get the issue resolved quickly. We would definitely rent here again! Thank you Merrie!

Spacious and clean cabin near Williams, AZ and Grand Canyon NP

  • 4 of 5

Great open floorplan and nicely equipped cabin-style home. Home is clean and equipped. Suitable for family with children.

While the home is in a secluded development, the rail line (within 1/2 mile) was quite active during our stay (July).

Overall, we really enjoyed the home and our stay. We noted that the owners are in process of updating the gravel driveway, which will be nicer for future guests.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding your stay in our home. We do try to make the best experience possible for our guests, and yes, there were a few loads of gravel on the property during your stay. We do not want to make our guests uncomfortable by our being there doing yard work and maintenance during their stay, so we came in at the first vacancy and spread the material, as well as cleaning and repairs our housekeepers don't do. The driveway and walkways are much improved, and it looks beautiful. I'm sorry you could not rate your experience a five star.

Fantastic Place!

  • 5 of 5

We used the Gateway Cottage as a launchpad for our adventures in the area. The Cottage itself is wonderful - spacious, comfortable, modern. Two families of four stayed very easily and the owners were very nice to deal with. We highly recommend for your Grand Canyon adventures!

Lovely, clean house. Spacious with all the amenities except air conditioning.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the home and the area. We know owner can not control the weather but thought listing should have mentioned the fact that there was no air conditioner. It took awhile in the evening for home to cool down after heat of the day.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience regarding your stay at our home. Unfortunately, the weather was much hotter than normal, and I apologize for the house being uncomfortable during your stay. We have since installed an evaporative cooler on the house which makes it quite pleasant.
