Classic Adirondack log cabin located on 6+ acres of private land, with magnificent mountain views and 400 feet of lakefront . There is a large stone fireplace in the living room, a screened porch, 3 outside fireplaces, a waterfront deck with tete-a-tete, canoes and a rowboat to launch from your own dock. Have breakfast in the fully functional kitchen; refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, blender, pots, pans, dishes -- all the necessities. The new gas grill is ideal for a cookout. The master bedroom offers an Adirondack log bed, while there is a loft area that sleeps four, and a hide-a-bed sofa in front of the fireplace. Watch Satellite TV, DVD movies or just sit outside on your Adirondack chairs, by the campfire, and appreciate the star filled sky.
Surrounded by the sounds of nature you will be reminded that you do have neighbors - loons, ducks, Blue Heron, etc.., Completely private on 6+ acres with 400 feet of waterfront. In the summer pick blueberries down by the dock or across the road. Plenty of dirt roads leading right from the cabin are well suited for hiking, nature walking or biking to discover the beauty and wonder of the Adirondacks.
The Lakes: Mountain view lake is a small private quiet mountain lake home to beavers, ducks and loons. Canoe via a channel and discover Indian Lake. Indian Lake is bigger and better suited for swimming, and tubing. Both lakes offer lots of fishing opportunities; perch, pike and small-mouth bass. Small kids will enjoy the sandy beach area with a wade in point on Indian Lake while older kids (including our labs) have been known to jump right from the cabin's private dock. Both lakes are about 3 miles long -Mt. View is narrow and Indian Lake is wide. The lakes are connected and offer fishing opportunities with small motors, kayaks, canoe, or rowboats.
There are lots of bigger lakes nearby: Meacham Lake, Saranac Lake, Lake Plaid, Mirror Lake, etc.., Fly fishing is renowed at Salmon River. Deer River flow only 20 minutes away offers abundant wildlife, large pike, easy canoe launch and even some trout! Enjoy the St. Regis canoe area and make sure to bring the camera.
The Mountains: Hiking, walking, biking, jogging, running. Whatever you can do with a mountain the Adirondacks is the place to do it. Hike Debar Mountain at Meacham Lake Campground or hike to the top of Azure Mt. with the working firetower but make sure you 'take a rock to the top' to prevent wind erosion. Look for soaring hawks and spectacular views of the St. Regis Canoe area. Dauphin Nature park is only .25 miles from the cabin's front door and offers lots of hiking opportunities without the drive. Paul Smith's Visitor Center offers hiking and walking opportunities for all levels from a climb up Jenkins Mountains to wide dirt paths for toddlers.
The fall is a spectacular time of the year. The Adirondack mountains are encased in autumn splendor and nature is a master artist with a variety of colors; gold, red, orange, etc.... Visit the High Peaks in Keene Valley and be prepared to fall in love!
The cabin: Where do you go to relax? No work, no traffic, no cell phones and no stress. The only thing you have to do is what you want. Build a fire, grab a blanket and listen to the distinct sound of each raindrop while you relax, read or take a nap. Get dressed and get that heart pumping with a challenging hike. Look for wildlife while you hop on the bike or grab the fishing rod and reel in some fun. Rediscover your own voice in nature's golden silence.
Build an outside fire and toast the smores! Throw a log on the indoor fireplace, play cards, watch a movie or look for stars in the nighttime sky. Stay up late and let your body's alarm clock wake you. Snuggle up next to the fire, partner or family pet. Canoe, kayak or take a dip from the dock. You decide! The most important thing to spend is your time. You won't remember the minutes just the moments. Enjoy each moment with yourself or with your family at the cabin on the lake in the mountains.

About Douglas M Johnson
My wife and I are retired public school teachers, who have spent our summers in the Adirondack Mountains for all of our married life. We find the mountains offer us a welcome refuge from the busy work world and a playground that allows us to pursue a variety of interesting and enjoyable activities with our family.
Douglas M Johnson purchased this Cabin in 2012
Why Douglas M Johnson chose Owls Head
Our lakeside log cabin is located on 6+ acres of Adirondack forest land, with no visible neighbors (except for camps on the other side of the lake). This very private type of setting is hard to find on most Adirondack Lakes. It was this location, coupled with the attractive, rustic log cabin that resulted in our purchase of Camp Critters 3 years ago.
What makes this Cabin unique
Past guests have found their time at the cabin to offer a most peaceful and relaxing vacation. There are walking and hiking trails just beyond the cabin's entrance road, while the lake offers enjoyable canoeing, kayaking and boating. Fishing at the lake and on its feeder streams is excellent.

Great place to spend a relaxing Vacation!!
The cabin was very clean and the grounds were well taken care of. Douglas was extremely friendly and welcoming. He explained how to run all the mechanicals in the house to ensure our comfort. He was kind enough to inform us about nearby activities and restaurants. We found the cabin comfortable and cozy. It had all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed the many outdoor seating areas and especially the double rocker down by the lake. Though the water was a little too cold for my wife and I (not surprised as it was October) our American Eskimo dog Koda found it just right!! He went swimming as often as possible. We were fortunate to have had such good weather as temperatures were in the high 60's to mid 70's with sunshine each day.
We took the canoe out and the three of us spent a peaceful afternoon exploring the lake. There are many hiking trails leading straight from the cabin and with our dog leading the way we enjoyed many peaceful walks.
Koda especially loved it as he was able to be off leash the entire time we were there. There were very few people around so we felt safe to let him go free.
A short walk down the road is a small restaurant called Sugarloaf. Douglas suggested we try it and we were so glad that we took his advice. The food was awesome and the owners were very friendly.
The view of the lake and surrounding mountains was beautiful. We enjoyed watching the sun set over the lake and the star filled sky at night.
I would definitely recommend Camp Critters to anyone looking for a peaceful, comfortable and scenic place to spend vacation. It is very pet friendly and there are many outdoor activities close by. The three of us look forward to spending another wonderful vacation there. We cannot thank Douglas enough for his kindness and willingness to let us stay at his beautiful cabin!!
We are very happy to learn of your time spent at the cabin. The area does offer many worthwhile outdoor activities, coupled with a peaceful, relaxing setting. We're delighted that Koda was able to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors. Thank you for sharing your experiences and we look forward to your future stays at the cabin.
Excellent cabin and location.
Our first visit to Camp Critters. Will not be our last. Could just as easily be called Camp Serenity. Cabin has everything needed. Doug an outstanding host. Went over everything with us. Just a relaxing getaway spot.
Thank you for your kind comments about your time at our Adirondack cabin.
The privacy and serenity that Camp Critters offers is a great escape from the hustle-bustle of our modern world. We are happy to learn that you plan to return in the future.
Beautiful Adirondack Experience
This is a special place. The cabin has everything you need and nothing you don't, is right on the water, and extremely quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. Doug is lovely and provided everything we needed. Perfect for our kids and dog, this was a relaxing and restorative time for us. We boated on the lake, roasted smores in the outdoor firepit, played games, watched movies, went hiking and fished off the dock. An amazing place that we hope to return to as often as possible. Thanks Doug!
Thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences, while at the cabin. We're delighted that your family enjoyed spending time at the lake and that you look forward to returning in the future. Best wishes!
A perfect cabin with an old fashioned feeling but all the modern amenities.
Our family stayed at Camp Critter the week before Labor Day. Two adults, children ages 11,11 and 12 and 2 small dogs. We had a wonderful time and wish we could have stayed longer.

We have been coming to the camp for 10 years in a row now. It is like our summer home away from home. We are a family on 3 with our dog. Who also looks forward to the trip! Our son was 8 when we first came to camp Critters and he has loved the Adirondacks ever since. The cabin is exactly what we were looking for when we first came here and we have gotten to know the area. Even Belly at the restaurant on the other side of the lake. We always stop by to eat there. On cool nights we light a fire, on the rainy days we enjoy the peace and quiet, playing cards or watching a movie. The sunsets over the lake are beautiful in the evening. Can't think of another way to spend the summer where we can take out dog too.
Hope to be back again...
Wonderful location, cozy cabin
Words can't express how much we loved Camp Critters! We are a family of 4, including 2 young children and this cabin was perfect for us. It is secluded and private, yet easy to find and close enough to anything you would need. While there is a little drive involved to get to the grocery store, etc. the drive is scenic with beautiful mountain, pond and river/creek views. Upon arriving at the cabin, we were pleasantly surprised. We loved the cabin from the pictures on the website, but thought it was even better than the pictures showed! The photos of the views of the lake seemed to good to be true on the site, but were even better in person. We had a great time paddling around in the provided boats. We found everything we needed in the cabin to cook, clean and feel at home. The cabin was clean and organized when we arrived. The fireplace kept us warm on the cooler nights. There was a great selection of movies, games and puzzles for after a long day of hiking or on a rainy day. There is A LOT to explore in the area, which we did, but we were always happy to return to the cabin in the evening. The screened in porch was great for eating dinner and playing games. Doug was WONDERFUL about answering any and all questions. It's always sad to see a vacation end, but we never wanted to leave Camp Critters. It was truly a vacation that will stay in our hearts forever. We can't wait to return to the Adirondacks, and when we do we will definitely stay in this cabin again.
Thank you for your kind reflections on your week at Camp Critters. From your comments in our "guest book", it is obvious that you really enjoyed a number of interesting Adirondack activities with your family, as well as your time spent at the cabin.
We look forward to your return to Camp Critters in the future.
