About Richard & Janet Wills

We are Dick & Janet Wills, a fun & loving couple who have fully renovated an 1850's farmhouse overlooking Tobacco Row Mountain in Amherst county, VA. We love to hike and explore the AT and Blue Ridge parkway, both only 20 minutes away. We have begun a native plant garden and a wildflower meadow. Janet loves 'her birds' as she sits and drinks her coffee or tea at the kitchen window. Dick is a fern fanatic and has plant many species in the garden. Since we are still both working in Richmond, VA and are hardly there , we began sharing Oak Lawn in 2011. We are pleased to offer our second home for others to enjoy should your travel destination include Lynchburg or Central VA.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The mention of a small pond as part of Oak Lawn was correct. The pond is located on the adjacent property and is posted, no trespassing, by the owner.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

We were four women who stayed in this house while visiting Natural Bridge and Poplar Forrest. This house was our home base. We had planned to eat dinner out and explore the area, but, once we found the charm and comfort of this house, we picked up wine and cheese and found ourselves watching the sunset from those four Adirondack chairs pictured in the backyard. The house is big and comfy, the beds are comfortable and everything you need is right there. We had coffee in the kitchen nook and found ourselves lingering a little later in the mornings just enjoying the view.

There is a train track nearby. I'm only mentioning it because each night we were there, a few trains would go by between 8 and 10pm. They did not keep us awake but after the first night, it was good to know they would not be an issue by being an all night thing. On wine and cheese night, we actually enjoyed watching the trains go by.

If I pass through this area again, I would not hesitate to stay here.

We enjoyed our stay at Oak Lawn Country Home. The home was beautiful, clean and comfortable. It offered a peaceful place to bird watch, star gaze, or curl up in a comfy chair with one of the many books available in the home.

Wonderful weekend at a wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5

After traveling all day it was so wonderful to end the day at Oak Lawn! The home is magnificent!! The kitchen has everything one would need for a long weekend away. My only suggestion is to have a regular plain Jane coffee maker to make the mornings a little less stressful trying to read the instructions for the machine. We thoroughly enjoyed the Adirondack chairs and the view of the property. We would love to return next year!

Wonderful home for a family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We rented Oak Lawn recently for a multi-generational family get together, and found it just perfect! The home was comfortable, well appointed, and in a wonderful location. We had family meals around the big dining table, spent time in the kitchen nook watching the birds at the feeders, and used it as our home base for visiting the Lynchburg area. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing an alternative to a hotel for a family group!

The home was very nice and well represented by the pictures on the website.

Our family enjoyed our stay. Plenty of bedrooms and baths for our group of nine. The setting was nice with a country atmosphere but still close enough to stores and restaurants. The only thing I would change is to add a tv or two.

Will definitely return

  • 5 of 5

When visiting the Lynchburg area in the past, we have typically done the hotel thing. We were traveling with a group of family so we were looking for someplace that would be easier to socialize and "be family" instead of having to go from room to room in a crowded, noisy, busy hotel. We happened upon this place and thought we would try it out. It is approximately 20 minutes to central Lynchburg - not bad at all. So easy to fall in love with this place. The initial impression when driving up (and it was incredibly easy to find) was a gorgeous house on beautiful property. There are plenty of trees, yard area, a small pond, and wildlife galore. In the trees were bird feeders which made birdwatching easy and fun. When entering the home, the appointments were impeccable. The home is near perfectly restored to its original 1800's splendor and in every little nook and cranny was an unexpected surprise of some little artifact or decoration. The BOOKS! So many books that we could have gotten lost into.

My group was so impressed with everything that was available to us from linens to toiltries (including high end shampoo, body wash, and lotion) to food to wine to cook wear to board games to a grill and smoker - we were lacking for nothing.

This is a definite do-again the next time we are in the Lynchburg area.

Popular Grove
Car: necessary

Only 20 minutes away, west on Elon Road (VA-130), is the Blue Ridge Parkway @ Otter Creek (MP 60). Another 5 minutes west from there and you arrive at the James River @ Snowden, VA. Here you can enjoy a pleasurably and easy hike by going south across the river on the Appalachian Trail (AT) and along the river, following the AT up Matt's Creek. Or, going north on the AT, try the strenuous 4 mile hike to Fuller Rocks @ 2,472 ft. for spectacular views of the James River Valley and the city of Lynchburg . There is also good trout fishing (stocked in season) as you ascend on the AT on a little mountain stream, Rocky Row Run. You will also find parking & a public boat ramp right where this stream enters the James.
