Grammies Room on the Banks of Brushy Fork Creek on Beulah Land Farm

Bedrooms 1
Property type farmhouse

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 shared Bathroom, Sleeps 2 or 3

Beulah Land Farm used to be a working farm where we raised edible flowers herbs, animals and boys but is now a lovely retreat for friends from all over the world. I am privileged to be the on site owner/manager and I enjoy meeting all of the interesting people who are sent my way, as do my other in house tenants.

My home is a hundred years old. I will not promise that the floors are perfectly level or that there is a single square corner in the whole place but I will promise that it is a house full of love and interesting people. It is a six bedroom house on about two acres of land. There is also a small two story guest house on my property. I rent out the two apartments on a permanent basis. I also rent out two suites on the second floor on a permanent basis as well as a converted root cellar on the first floor. This makes for an eclectic living experience that I find not only stimulating and interesting but is like a loving family environment. I maintain all of the common areas myself on a daily basis- It is keep neat and clean and the room that I rent out for VRBO has a private bathroom and is on the first floor.

'Grammies Room on Beulah Land Farm'

is a large two room suite which is right across the hall from a large shared bathroom. There is a shower available in the shared bathroom if you do not want to use the jacuzzi tub.

In Grammies Room, you will find:

*a comfy queen sized bed

*windows that look across the covered porch to a bold creek running twenty feet away

* a lovely attached sun porch which has recently been converted into a spa bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and french doors that open onto your intimate covered porch with privacy shade

* Grammies fenced in flower garden and pond

*flat screen tv with cable and DVR.

* shared bathroom across the hall has washer/dryer

*Bird feeders teeming with locals

Three steps down and you are in Grammies Garden with its picket fence, stone pond, flower garden, concrete table and lounge chair. Your own private wonderland. Through the arbor you will find yourself in the front yard, which gives you private access to the house.

My name is Lee Ann Johnson. I've lived here at Beulah Land Farm, just five minutes from Boone for twenty five years. YOU are invited to the mountains where you can experience the peace and rest of my hundred year old farm. Beulah Land is a unique vacation opportunity. Once a working farm, where we raised herbs, edible flowers, animals and boys, now it can be YOUR farm away from home...

I would like for my place to be a refuge from the rigors of your own mountain adventures! This house with its old hardwood floors and high ceilings is the ideal place to come home to after a day of hiking, sightseeing, visiting or skiing!

- Want to come and visit your student at App? -Need a quiet weekend getaway?

-Make it a romantic retreat..

- or a girls weekend- come on up and cook your meals together, stay up late, giggle and laugh as you reconnect without distractions!

-We are fifteen to thirty minutes from skiing

After almost two years on Homeaway It has been a fun and interesting ride!

My guests are welcome to use the kitchen for cooking meals. Of course, I expect everyone to clean up after themselves, leaving the kitchen in the same shape they found it. I put all the dishes away every morning.

Guests are also welcome to make use of the big living and dining room as well as the covered front porch which is tastefully furnished for dining with large rattan and glass table, a seating area with comfortable rockers and of course the porch swing.

There are a number of places to sit and just enjoy the farm around the yard and gardens. There is also a classic old tree swing hung from the maple tree as well as a climbing rope for kids of all ages.

You are also welcome to take a Creek Walk up Brushy Fork Creek which runs by the house just thirty feet from the front door! Fishermen will be happy to learn there are trout in my creek and we are a hop, skip and a jump from the Watauga River!

You are my guest! If I am here, I try to make myself available whenever I am needed but am sensitive for your need for privacy at the same time. I love people and enjoy interacting with guests when I am in town.

The Neighborhood:

About Owner/ Manager

I was born and lived in Utah till I was six, at which time my family moved to Miami, Florida. This was where I think I developed my LOVE for the things I couldn't have there- the mountains, the beauty of changing seasons, and the color of a Carolina Blue Sky! I came to the Asheville area for summer camp for a few years in my teens and that sealed it for me!

After thirteen years of marriage and baby making, my husband and I sold everything in Florida and moved to Boone in 1987 with our four sons. We lived in a rental house for six months while I searched for my lifelong dream house- an old farmhouse which we found just five minutes from Boone in a perfectly lovely setting. I have lived here for almost thirty years now and wouldn't live anywhere else! We finished raising our sons here as well as cows, horses, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, goaats, cats, dogs, iguanas, ferrets- the list is endless.

After losing our son in 2004, we took on the task of raising his three year old daughter-

and before too long, my husband went on a walkabout that ended in our divorce. We have remained friends and he lives at the other end of our property now. My grand daughter is now fourteen years old and still lives with me. Jonathan, one of my boys lives in the garage apartment next door and sort of co parents with me. He has been a wonderful help to me over the last twelve years and she loves him very much. I began just renting out some rooms in my house to make ends meet until a few years ago, when my son sent my best friend and I to Italy for the trip of a lifetime. This year I have added VRBO and homeaway- I look forward to reaching a whole new group of people who are looking for something more than two beds and a dresser in a hotel for a reasonable rate!

Owner/ Manager purchased this farmhouse in 1988

Why Owner/ Manager chose Vilas

When we moved to Boone, I was so full of the dreams I had held dear for most of my life that I told my husband, "Just tell me how much we can spend- God will give me the house that is in my heart" We rented a house just a few miles from here for six months. I began the search in earnest. I had a very specific 'list' I had to fill. It had to be a very old house- a farmhouse with a big open hall upstairs, decent wiring and plumbing, outbuildings for farm animals, lots of property for my boys to run, running water- at the very least a bold creek, and as I began to drive around and look at the surrounding countryside, something came to me... I began to realize that one of the most important things to my search was the woman who had lived in the house before me.. and i wrote a poem about it. Since there weren't any old farmhouses on the market back then, I decided that I was going to make a cross stitch of the poem and when it was done, i had this feeling that my house would come available. So I set to work on the cross stitch. My realtor was very sweet and kind and never gave up on helping me find my dream house. She probably thought I was a little crazy, but she loved the poem and the cross stitch. Another person who never gave up was my best friend who had moved up here with HER husband and four boys just a month after we did. She called a realtor one night an gave him my 'list' and he said, "The hair is standing up on the back of my neck- I just came from the house you are describing." The next day, my realtor showed up to bring me to look at the house- when she held up a skeleton key, I began to cry- I just KNEW this was it. So it was. And when we made the offer on the house (they had six offers in two days) I insisted that they include a letter from me with a copy of the poem. It ended with these words: And the future will hold a place of honor for her, whose dream come true became mine. Several weeks later out of all those offers, they chose ours!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Ha. They say it is a magical place- that there is something very special here. I believe this also. It is a beautiful place on a gurgling creek under an ancient maple tree and I think that sometimes you can just feel the memories and laughter and tears of a hundred years of living from three families who were raised here- And who knows how many before that because I discovered that there was another house on this same site that was eventually torn down to build my house here in 1917! It is a gracious and welcoming home and I feel blessed to wake up here every day of my life!

Close .... but.... no

We were trying to avoid paying high hotel costs in the Boone area, which we did. But several things were not good.

We had to walk through the old kitchen and dining room, sagging floors, to get to our bedroom. Double bed, so my 6'2" hight didn't fit very well, feet hanging over. It was weird having to stick your head out to see if anyone was using the shower. We did have a bathroom, on old sun porch, but it had a jacuzzi, no shower. Didn't like the fact the dog or cat could have been on the bed or chair. Furniture had an odor that bothered me. Not my wife so much, which was unusual. No A/C. It was hot for the mountains.

The owner is dong the best she can, with her situation. Quite inventive actually. It just wasn't for us.

Fine if you're really budget conscious.

Owner's Response: Wow. That was the most stinging review I have ever had. While I might appreciate the part where you called me "inventive" it was a sort of back handed compliment.. with a dash of pity that I am "doing the best I can with my situation.." My response is as follows: First, I would like to suggest that THIS guest and ALL guests READ the information that is provided by your host from cover to cover before you make a reservation, something that this gentleman obviously failed to do! My site VERY clearly states: 1.that this is a 100year old home 2.that I have a dog and a cat 3. that there is a Jacuzzi in the en-suite bathroom 4. that you are welcome to use the shower in the SHARED bathroom across the hall, 5.that there is no air-conditioning. If these were issues that would bother you, why book, only to complain about the things that were clearly set forth in the description? Most of my guests find it enchanting that this lovely old girl has been the scene of three families sharing all the joy and grief of life together on these "sagging floors". It is beyond ironic that someone who would book a room in a home and complain that he had to walk through the "old kitchen and old dining room" but not even notice the myriad of birds feeding just outside the dining room window or the china cabinet which holds my precious grandmothers collection of china or the assortment of little fancy bottles across the top of the dining room window with my dirt collection from all over the world. His repeated use of the word OLD with such distaste and almost contempt suggests to me that he might have a more positive experience if he limited his future choices to NEW places from now on. More irony: for all his complaints, the room has a private entrance they never used! The bed in Grammies Room IS a QUEEN, not a double and most people rave about how comfy it is. If you are a very tall person I should think you'd be used to your feet hanging over the end of the bed by now. Two of my boys are 6'4" and they have long since accepted that as a fact of life. My take away from this is : 1. READ your hosts description 2. If you feel the description was inaccurate, tell your host or complain about it in your review: by all means, hold them accountable! 3. But if you find that the description is accurate, it was just that you failed to pay attention to it, its really not very kind to just say mean things about their home and life style

I stayed overnight at Grammies Room January 28th so I could attend the Winterfest in nearby Blowing Rock. My room was very cozy and I felt like I was staying overnight at a Friend's. There was even a fancy piece of candy on my pillow! Though I didn't need to use it, I had access to a washer/dryer and thought this might have come in need if I were staying longer. My room was great to relax in after walking around Blowing Rock all day. The bed slept very comfortably. I am a dog lover and Susie greeted me at my car with a wagging tail. We had a snow shower when I woke up January 29th. I took my morning coffee to the outside porch attached to my room and admired the falling snowflakes. The home is very cozy and just like being at home. This was actually my very first experience with VRBO and I was very happy with it and plan to return.

Shared Bathroom and Country Hostel Type of Accomodation

  • 2 of 5

Please be aware that this place has a shared bathroom and the Ad does not clearly state that. We had rented this room for 2 nights but ended up leaving after the first night. The owner is helpful in finding the place but does need some attention on keeping it clean.

Owner's Response: For future reference, this room DOES have an en-suite bathroom now on the little sun porch. Im sorry you didn't find it perfectly clean! I was away for the weekend helping paint sets for a play my friend was producing. I promise it was spotless when I left before you came. But you know it was a shared bathroom then and I do have another tenant sharing that bath...

Friendly Country Stay

  • 4 of 5

Quaint farmhouse only 5 miles from downtown Boone. Leeann is a friendly hostess. I enjoyed the outdoor spaces as well as the bedroom with separate sitting room and private porch and garden. Fridge space, kitchen facilities. Also loved that I could bring my dog! Lots of animals plus people staying there, so come if you enjoy a place where there's plenty going on. I liked it because I was traveling alone. She also has a really cute tent arrangement outside with plush beds/outdoor kitchen, etc. that you can rent. Also close to Valle Crucis and other attractions.

Make sure to read every single detail before booking. You share a bathroom with other visitors in a shared farmhouse, and that is not very clear on the description. Lots of people are in and out of the house, so if you are big on privacy, this is not your kind of place. I also had difficulty getting directions to the house. The host was really nice and accommodating, though.
