Come enjoy the Big Easy in this beautiful, recently-renovated home in the heart of New Orleans. The historic house was built five years after the Civil War and has been renovated with luxurious appointments throughout. At 4000 square feet, this gorgeous residence has four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, three outdoor porches, high ceilings, chandeliers, gleaming hardwood floors and lots of sun and light. Enjoy a lemonade in the front porch swing, or lounge on the back porch's outdoor living area near the banana trees.
One block off the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line and parade route, the home is in the best location in New Orleans, at an address the 'New Orleans Times Picayune' calls ' of the most striking blocks in the city.'
In ideal proximity to the restaurants and history of the French Quarter, Garden District and Marigny you could hop on the streetcar for a trip to the French Quarter, or wander over to the Columns Hotel for a Sazerac before dinner. This lovely home is a stunning example of gracious New Orleans living.
The interior is inviting and chic; a well-curated collection of antiques shipped from Paris, hand-loomed rugs purchased in the markets of Iran, custom blown chandeliers from Murano, embroidered textiles from craftswomen in Uzbekistan. The furnishings reflect an international lifestyle, but most important, create a warm, comfortable home.
At the end of a delightful day retreat to your room, lavished with 500 thread count linens and Anichini duvets. The Master bedroom's king bed and Guest Suite's queen are both wrought iron canopy beds; each room has a full attached bath. Or, choose the Jungle Room or White Room just down the hall, equipped with custom made X-long twin beds said by some to be the most comfortable in the house.
Details you won't want to overlook:
--Jacuzzi tub and steam shower in master bath
--Antique claw footed tub in guest bath
--Back porch living and dining areas

Born and raised in Uptown New Orleans I've lived in other cities most of my adult life. More recently, though, I kept thinking of the famous song 'Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?' Well, I do, so I've come home. It's such a pleasure to be back!

An absolute dream house
I've stayed many places in New Orleans, from the finest hotels to some exceptionally charming historic homes, but nothing compares to Alison's property. It is an absolute dream house which perfectly blends the amenities and privacy of a 5 star hotel with the relaxed comfort and originality of being in your own private dream home. Her eye for style and decor is unmatched and she could not have made our stay more welcoming or comfortable. She even left a giant bushel of fresh picked bananas from the backyard for our enjoyment. The master bathroom and steam room is the finest I have ever been in and the master bed is so comfortable that we are replacing our own bed at home with the exact model from her house. We could not have enjoyed ourselves more here and can't wait to return to Alison's historic paradise. If you are a lunatic for history like me make sure you check out and appreciate the original 1870's mantel and mirror in the parlor that dates all the way back to the origin of the house.
JazzFest Annual Outing!
JazzFest this year wasn't the greatest with exceptional amounts of rain on an almost daily basis. Luckily we had rented this Garden District gem to relax, cook and dry out! The house is centrally located between the Quarter and Tulane with great biking and nearby drinking and eating establishments of the Garden District. If you're a chef by heart, you'll love the well laid out and large kitchen. The backyard was relaxing and well used when the rain stopped. Alison, the owner, was both helpful and considerate of our needs and availed herself for any special requests. Overall, an excellent experience!
Cooking, dining and wine drinking in New Orleans
My vacation could be summed up as follows: cooking, dining, wine drinking. And this house is the perfect place to do all three. Being a visitor from New York, daydreaming about a chef's kitchen is an everyday occurance, like putting on shoes. While it's easy to deal with my small-but-well-organized kitchen at home, I was very surprised by how much better my cooking tasted in this large, handy kitchen. The moment I realized I was on vacation was when I found myself laughing hysterically while preparing dinner, drinking wine, and chatting with my friends who were lounging nearby in the den. The huge, open kitchen seemed to open up our conversations and our spirits.
I've been to my share of designer model homes in the DC and NYC areas, and while most of them have style, almost none of them make me feel as happy as this house. The owner has exquisite and diverse taste, both of which are reflected in the way each of the rooms is decorated. Lush fabrics paired with bold prints on the bedding, window treatments that frame the views, the subtle yet brave moments of colors and textures. Each room has a different theme or approach in the decor, and each decision reflects the owner's perspective, consideration and what must be a very heavy travel schedule. It's not often that I see a white room that's not boring or a jungle room that's not too wild. In this house, both are pulled off flawlessly. And the pink vanity with the gilded mirror in the powder room made me a believer in contemporary baroque!
Did I mention that I took a lot of baths during my stay? I don't have a tub in New York so I took at least one bath a day while in New Orleans. Most of the bathrooms have gorgeous tubs and I tried them all. I should mention that, to my eye, all the bathrooms are Elle Decor-worthy.
In a nutshell, the house was a vacation in itself. One minute I would feel like I'm making pancakes on the set of "Something's Gotta Give", the next I'm on the patio drinking an Old Fashioned and re-discovering that I'm in New Orleans. I enjoyed my time at this house immensely. The infectious style and the love the owner has for the house rubbed off on me and my guests. We all treasured the house like it was our own. If relaxing in style is your idea of a civilized vacation, look no further.
5 stars from this happy patron.
Stunning Historic Home
As a regular user of VRBO, and a repeat user of VRBO for my trips to New Orleans, I can say with certainity that this is one of the finest properties listed in the city; we definitely plan on returning in the future.
The Property is located on a quiet street lined with BEAUTIFUL "turn of the century" homes, that together seem to take you back to another era. Honestly, if a horse drawn carriage had come down the street, I probably would have spilt my sazerac and assumed I was dreaming.
Having been to New Orleans several times in the past, I had a general idea of what to expect from the neighborhood, yet nothing could have prepared my wife and I for what laid in store for us behind the beautiful doors of this majestic home.
The Uptown-Carrolton property truly EXCEEDS all expectations. Believe me when I tell you that the online photos do not do this property justice. The owner has done an incredible job of maintaining the historic integrity of the home while at the same time blending a perfect mix of comfort and style into every room.
The heart of this home is an enormous open kitchen and living room area, that provided our group with plenty of space to lounge. The high ceilings and beautiful windows open up to a stunning deck, that is well furnished and was ideal for late night group conversations over a bottle of wine...or two.
The bedrooms were furnished with top of the line beddings and the bathrooms were equally impressive with large tubs for soaking and steam room capabilities in the master shower.
All in all this home provided our group with the perfect alternative to the typical French Quarter routine and was exactly what we were looking for - an opportunity to experience New Orleans from a local perspective, yet in a relaxing setting that that allowed our group to make the most of our limited time together.
The proximity to amazing restaurants (i.e. Commanders palace, Upperline, etc), grocery stores (Fresh Market & Whole Foods), and shopping (Magazine St.) was excellent.
Trolly into French quarter was only a block or two away and a short 15 minute ride in.
In summary, if your looking for a "special" venue for a "memorable" trip, look no further than this property.
A fabulous house and a great neighborhood!
What a fabulous house! I love New Orleans and have visited many times over the years. Usually I stay in hotels at or near the French Quarter and while they are perfectly nice, none can compare with the experience of staying in this beautiful home. I rented the house with a group of friends for Jazzfest of 2012. We all loved it and plan to return as soon as we can.
The house itself is gorgeous but I want to start with a brief description of the locale. It's in the heart of the Garden District, with all that entails. The block is beautiful and all the houses are very unique, even quirky, but also generous and grand. Each house seems as lovingly cared for as the next. I am an architect and couldn't help but want to know the stories and history behind each.
I loved how easy it was get around from our spot. It's just two blocks to the streetcar on Saint Charles so we could be anywhere in the city in about twenty minutes. Some of my fellow house guests would take runs in the morning. They would come back with great stories about what they saw (Audobon Park, Tulane, the Mississippi!) or with ideas about the next restaurant or museum we would go to. I take lots of yoga and found it easy to walk to classes nearby.
Now, about the house. It's a delight from top to bottom. The living room, dining room and library are very elegantly appointed. However most of our time was spent the in heart of the home, the kitchen. It opens up to, and is really a part of, a very spacious and beautiful den. My friends and I would go to Jazzfest during the day then gab about our experiences until the wee hours while hanging out there. We also spent a lot of time on the adjacent outdoor deck. It's got a large dining table and a separate sitting area - great for dining or just lounging around (we did lots and lots of both!)
Lastly, there are four fantastic bedrooms. Each has a very distinctive look. All of them have clearly been very carefully and lovingly decorated with goodies from around the world. It's that kind of personal touch that makes staying here such a joy.
What more can I say? Five stars! I can't wait to go back!
Amazing stay at this beautiful home
I had the pleasure of staying in this beautiful home with a group of friends during Mardi Gras 2012. Having grown up in New Orleans, I was initially drawn to the home's location (just off St. Charles Avenue, a walk from anywhere uptown or in the Garden District, and a short cab from the French Quarter). However, our experience completely exceeded expectations. The house is large with lots of open space, and with an expansive back deck overlooking a roomy yard. Inside, the quality of the home and furnishings are extraordinary. The owner's exceptional taste is reflected in the rich fabrics, rugs and pieces of furniture that adorn each room. From large walk-in closets to carefully devised and charming decors in each different bedroom, the attention to detail in this home is stunning. It combines classic New Orleans architecture with all of the modern amenities, from the sound system to the professional kitchen. I had the opportunity to meet the owner when we arrived, and as we toured the property it was immediately clear how much effort and care she has poured into making her home so warm and comfortable. (The owner had also been an absolute pleasure to coordinate with before our arrival, and even helped us make some of our plans and arrangements for the weekend).
This is the perfect house for a family, a few couples, or a relaxing getaway weekend with friends. For those seeking a fraternity house environment, I might suggest looking elsewhere- the house is far too immaculate to be your party destination. We had an unforgettable weekend and would recommend this house without reservation.
Walk a block to St. Charles Avenue and catch the streetcar to the French Quarter. Or, walk over to the Columns Hotel for a Sazerac before dinner; the area abounds with wonderful local cuisine. Just strolling through the neighborhood enjoying the architecture is fabulous sightseeing!
