NOTE TO OUR GUESTS: Hale Mar is located north of the current lava eruptions, in the OPPOSITE direction from that in which lava is flowing (it is flowing south to the ocean, AWAY from our area). Also the volcanic ash and fog ("vog") is blowing in a south-west direction from the eruptions, again in the OPPOSITE direction from our area. We want to assure our guests and potential guests that we are not threatened by the current volcanic activity. If this were to change, we assure you we will keep you fully informed. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.

The weather was not welcoming but Hale Mar offered wonderful comfort and amazing ocean spectacle
The home was spacious, well equipped, clean. Weather not the best but it didn't stop us from enjoying the pool and the hot tub. The view from the master bedroom was wonderful!
Ocean front paradise! Nothing like sleeping to the sounds of the waves crashing right outside your window. Easy booking and owner thought of everything with helpful tips and suggestions. Five stars!
If you're looking for a beautiful large home on the coast near Hilo with everything you need and plenty of room for 6 adults Hale Mar is for you! We stayed for a week in January with our adult children and their significant others and had a great time! The house was clean, well appointed and comfortable. All had there own space along with enough common space for all to spend time together. The master suite encompasses the entire 2nd floor which was great for my wife and I. The house is very quiet and secluded and felt very safe. Attached garage adjoining the kitchen which made unloading groceries easy especially if raining. Pool, hot tub and outdoor areas very nice! We saw turtles from the master suite lanai while having our coffee almost every morning and a whale once. All in all a wonderful stay and would recommend!
Mahalo for your great review, Doug! We are so glad you enjoyed Hale Mar, and that you even saw the wonderful turtles - a special feature of sitting on the upstairs balcony where you can look down into the waves! We hope you’re able to come back soon. With much aloha,
Hale Mar Hawaii
Property needs some TLC
It’s always difficult to write reviews when you didn’t love a place. But we didn’t love this place & we feel out of step with all the 5 star reviews. The house could use some tlc. Firstly, the musty smell was overwhelming. We opened all doors and windows for the whole stay but couldn’t get rid of it. The bedrooms downstairs are tired & could do with a refurbishment. The smallest room is really a study or hallway turned into a child’s room. Someone also needs to go through the kitchen & restock wine glasses, cutlery etc.
The house is in a very quiet neighbourhood & if you are looking for something half way between Hilo & Volcano this is a good option. However for us it was too far from Hilo. This is my mistake & not the houses fault!
The ocean in the winter has spectacular waves crashing, loudly, all day but don’t expect them to quiten down at night. Again it’s the location that I didn’t realise would be an issue & has nothing to do with the house per se. The windows & doors vibrated from the noise.
The master bedroom is lovely; bed is comfortable but we did step back into the 70s in the bathrooms. The outside space is great. We had energetic kids with us & appreciated that they could go outside & run around.
We stayed in 5 different places during our travels around Hawaii & this was our least favourite.
We have a family beach house that we rent out so understand the challenge of maintaining a holiday rental. But this is really only a 3 star property.
Our family of 7, ages 13-69 thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Couldn't have been finer
Have stayed in this property several times over the years. Always a wonderful experience. We very much appreciate the care and attention Hale Mar receives from the owner. Especially enjoyed the upgraded outdoor furniture this trip. Very comfy.
Black sand beaches, rainforests with waterfalls, orchid farms, horseback riding, day and night time Volcano visits to live lava flows, whale watching and fishing from your back yard, swimming and snorkeling in giant tide pools, astronomy and skiing at the observatory, nature photography, wine tasting, art galleries, bird watching, golf, bicycling, whale and dolphin watching from your lanai, turtle sanctuary, macadamia nut farms, honey farms, coffee farms, Tsunami Museum, farmers' markets full of tropical fruit and flowers, rest and relaxation. Other Activities: Volcanoes, coffee & orchid farms, wine tasting, museums, waterfalls. Golf: So many golf courses to choose from! Hilo Municipal and Nanawali Country Club are the closest, just a 15 minute drive, and offer club and cart rental and driving ranges at a great price. Head to Volcano for a cool course at high altitudes on a hot day. Or drive around the island to try even more courses north, west and south of Hilo. Ski: Yes, you can ski Hawaii! most winters there's a little snow atop Mauna Kea (about a 45 minute drive, near the Observatory) and Hawaiians avidly ski and snowboard!
