This house has been in the family for 30+ years, we still enjoy it, and keep nice, just don't use it as much as we use to. We would ask that you take care of our place as if it was yours, while your there.
Why Todd chose Benton Harbor
It has Great Character. Great location, Great views, with a great beach house feeling.
Beautiful sunset views
The setting and location are wonderful, with an expansive flat yard and wonderful views of the lake. House location is very convenient (quick drive) proximity to St. Joseph which has public beach access, parks for kids, many quaint shops and great restaurants.
Unfortunately our stay started with some significant plumbing issues throughout the rental house, which took the owner 3 days, and several followup phone calls to respond about and resolve. Once resolved we were better able to relax and enjoy our time.
Consider this rental rustic, with many dated features of the house, such as inoperable dishwasher, old refrigerator without working ice maker, furniture that has been very long lived-in.
As described, the several steps to the beach are steep and sturdy. The sand area at the private beach is limiting and very narrow, which we were told by neighbors is due to spring storms earlier in 2017 which eroded the beach area and some dunes.
We made the most of our time together with family and enjoyed the sunset views and lake breeze from the house.
They were the first rental of the season. The house had not been used for eight months. We had no idea drain was partially clogged. I was notified of this Sunday evening, by Monday 1 p.m. I had a professional drain cleaning company take care of the issue.(Roots found their way into the drain line to septic.) Have not had a problem since. The house is set up for a rustic Beach House feel. A ice maker is not mentioned in the description of the house. The dishwasher works, but not great. The furniture is fine and fits the house perfectly. In five years of rentals, we have never had a complaint. I think her review was unfair.
Rebooked as soon as we could!
Halfway through out week stay we starting inquiring about re-booking for next year. We are two families: Four parents and 3 kids aged 8,6 and 4. Kids loved it. Parents cherished it. And everything was as smooth as it could be thanks to the availability and courtesy of the owners.
House: Everything you need and very clean. This is the owner's regular home and it is treated as such. There is more to it than what's listed: There are two family rooms which is huge if you want to watch the Olympics while the kids watch a Disney flick. In addition to the kitchen table, there is a nice game table for Yahtzee, uno and candyland games. The deck and patio are spacious and have nice tables. Whole yard is in your view from the grill. Thus, you can play whiffle ball while manning the grill so that mommy can take a nap after a day at the beach. Winning!!
Beach: Stairs down are solid. No problems for the 4 year old. Even tho there was a shrinking of the beach the last two years along the shoreline on the east side of Lake Michigan, this property had plenty of space for whiffle ball, badminton and paddle ball. We were completely by ourselves Monday - Friday. it's clean, no bugs, no rocks (that can change over the winter), nice sand bar. Neighbors we did meet on the weekend were beyond nice and friendly.
Location: You are secluded yet close to everything you could want. DiMaggio's pizza 4 minutes away. Downtown St. Joe is 8 minutes away. Pipestone (shopping, movie theater, kids museum, go karts, putt-putt) is 20 minutes away. Truckers burger, keno and cocktails at an authentic Michigan bar 2 minutes away (Riverside Cafe).
Convenience and security: When you are on the deck cocktailing or running the grill, you can see both living rooms. Kids are always in your line of sight. Same goes for the yard. Makes it real easy to be responsible while relaxing. 40 yards to stairs directly down to beach. Takes a minute. 2 minutes if you got the four year old and a cooler. Should someone wish to stay upstairs, cheap walkie talkies work great if you want someone to bring something down to the beach or alert someone that a child is going up.
We've rented 6 different places over the years. We will rent this until then say it is no longer available.
