About Darin Bankhead

My wife and I have 4 wonderful young sons, 3 dogs, 2 horses, and a cat. We are a very active family and love snowboarding, hiking, fishing, and exploring all around Big Bear Lake. We love spending time at the cabin and we know your experience will be the same!

Darin Bankhead purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Darin Bankhead chose Big Bear Lake

We love to get away from 'big city life' and escape to the mountains. Big Bear Lake is so close to all of the cities of Southern California that it is the perfect getaway. You feel like you are in the high Sierras, but it is a short drive to get here. The cabin is in the perfect location close to the lake, shopping and skiing.

What makes this cabin unique

Whispering Pines Lodge is in the perfect location. You can walk to Holloway's Marina and rent a boat to do some trout fishing, or rent a kayak to explore the serene lake in the morning or evening. You can also learn to wakeboard at their new cable park! Shopping at the Village is only a couple minutes away, and you can be on the slopes in minutes! Or just relax on the deck and listen to the wind whisper through the pine trees.

Home very nice

  • 5 of 5

The home was very nice and well equipped. When we realized that the wifi didn't work the owner told us that he would comp us some of our pay as we'd need to use more of our data plans which is very nice as the company wouldn't be able to come out on the weekend to fix it. I would definitely recommend this home for a nice stay in big bear.

Poor ventilation, very dark in the front of the cabin, very poor, poor lighting.

  • 3 of 5

So many things not working. Ceiling fan lights in the dining room and in the living room do not come on. Only one lamp works in the living room. Garbage disposal does not work. No propane in the barbecue grill and the grill was dirty. The master bed in the master bedroom, sags to the middle. The dining room, kitchen, living room are all dark-even when opening all of the blinds there it's very, very poor lighting. Last but not least, there is poor ventilation in the cabin. With it being 84° in Big Bear Lake, the cabin stays at a steady 79°and there is no way of cooling it off. We pulled out a box fan and opened up the front door and the cabin still remained between 76° and 79° morning, noon, and night. More than likely, we won't be booking this cabin in Big Bear Lake.

Owner's Response: Hi Jean Thank you for the heads up on the lighting. We will have our handyman check what bulbs can be replaced and have them fix the garbage disposal as well. Unfortunately, it does get warm in Big Bear Lake in the summer. Luckily the cabin has a lot of windows and it gets cold at night (in the 40's this week), so that is always a good way to cool it down. Thanks again for alerting us about the items that need to be fixed and we will get right on it.

Better for winter stay than spring

  • 4 of 5

Owner accommodated our request to postpone arrival due to late season snow we had not anticipated. Great kitchen, fully stocked with all the necessary appliances, cookware, etc. Although we were only 3 adults, this 3 bedroom home could easily accommodate 6 adults or a family. Mattress not great and living room couch cushions need replacing. Unfortunately, the outdoor patio furniture was not cleaned off so we couldn't sit outdoors and enjoy the nice weather. House needs a good airing out from winter use of fireplace and a spring cleaning of the walls and carpet.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the info! We always need to do a lot of cleaning after Winter, especially with all the snow we got this year! Thank you for the heads up and we will get on those things. We appreciate you staying with us!

First Big Bear Trip

  • 4 of 5

A few friends and my girlfriend wanted to go to Big Bear and rent a cabin. I came across Darin's cabin, and it seemed to be perfect as far as look, number of rooms, and proximity to the slopes/lakes/restaurants. I contacted Darin with my interest in his cabin, and he was very nice and prompt in responding. The cabin itself was very nice. It is located very close to all the major hotspots and was not very difficult to find. From the outside, it looked like a cabin from a movie! Inside the cabin was very modern, but still had its cabin feel and touches. All appliances, lights, and heating worked as expected. Only a few minor things: 1. the master bedroom shower door was stuck and seemed to take too much force to open, and in fear of breaking it, we opted to share the other shower 2. The ceiling fan light in the living room was not functioning, which Darin stated to us before arriving 3. Bunk beds were very squeaky, so one of our friends decided to sleep on the couch. Besides those minor things, the cabin was perfect. We will definitely be staying there again! Thank you Darin!
