Away from it all

  • 4 of 5

When we 1st arrived we were surprised at how long it too us to actually get from Murphy to the cabin. Make sure you have everything that you need before you go. It's about a 45 min drive each way from town. That was a pleasant surprise. The cottage was as the pictures depict. The only downside was that there was no satellite service while we were staying there. Only the DVD player worked. We also did not have any cell service. You realize very quickly that you're dependent on your phone when there isn't anything else to do. We drove to town and got some dvds and board games. Honestly, it's a great place. Especially if you want to get away from everything.

view in photo is not from cabin. Smell is unbareable.

I had originally booked for a Thursday a certain amount per night, for three nights i received no response so at last minute it was declined, I had even called and left a message with owner. We began to make other plans and headed on to N.C. staying at a hotel the first night, then owner calls and says it was available, that another booking had fallen thru, I should have just stuck with hotel, but thinking well it costs about the same and it "sounded" so good. But then the price changed , because of first week of July. i thought well still not bad. After it was confirmed was informed we needed to take our trash down to main garbage bin outside gate of the community not to use the trash can at cabin, which was a pain when leaving when you have a car and it is loaded down. We arrive at gate and got even worse feeling when the guy asks," you stayed in the cabin before?" We replied no ,he laughed. We headed up road to cabin the road is not posted on stop sign as the others are. Arrive at cabin to unlock door, sliding glass door can hardly be tugged open. One window air conditioner for entire cabin, which isn't so bad except like when we were there in upper 80s', when we stepped in the cabin was so hot it was like an oven and the smell would almost make you vomit. I had seen other reviews and thought well surely after the complaints they were corrected as most people do. There was a smell of dead rat so terrible in one bedroom it could not be used ended up on sofas, the other odor is very old musky drapes beds and furniture, like a dirt basement. There were rat bait blocks under sofas and in kitchen cabinet readily available for a child to grab. Mattresses have to be from 1970s' The larger bed you had to lay your head at the end as it was sloped downward from being so old and worn. The view of lake is not from cabin all you see in front is another cabin and back trees. I realized my booking was put off to get more money. The one thing ppl look forward to is a nice cozy bed to retire after their day, but it was impossible to sleep with smell and nothing to really sleep on. owner seemed nice on phone, I would recommend a new maintainence person and cleaning lady as it is not just a rustic place it is run down. Laundry room outside down back of stairs has no dryer hose so it gets very hot. And molded insulation hanging from underneath house. We left a day early after prepaying.

Owner's Response: Let me first begin by saying that I sent someone to do a thorough inspection of the cabin. There was no smell and no dead rodents were found. The reservation was not declined, it expired. The reason for this was that there was a tentative reservation pending. This was indicated on the sites' calendar. The two people were enroute from Tampa and were not able to process the payment from their vehicle. In the meantime Martha called from a local hotel wanting to know if the cabin was still available. I called her back immediately and advised her that the previous booking did fall through and that the cabin was available. I tried very hard with the help of the Home Away support team for 3 hours on Sunday Morning to accommodate Martha and her family since this was a last minute reservation request. The Home Away site clearly states that that the rates during the 4th of July week were slightly higher. Obviously the booking was not put off in order for me to get more money as Martha erroneously stated in her review. My apologies that the weather was so hot on the date and time of arrival but I do not leave the AC running so that the cabin is cool when guests arrive. as far as the trash is concerned; I don't think that it is unreasonable to ask renters to kindly dispose of their own trash in the dumpsters by the entrance gate on their way out. Especially since there was a bear sighting earlier in the week and also other critters (raccoons, possum, etc.) roaming the woods at night.. Martha was advised of this. It looks to me that the security guard was just doing is job when he asked if they had stayed at the cabin before. Perhaps he was just asking to see if they needed directions to the cabin. I, or any of my guests never once had a problem with the guards being rude or disrespectful. On the contrary, they have always been polite and helpful. The view of the lake pictured on the website is from the road in front of the cabin. A similar view, but somewhat obstructed, can be seen from the outside deck of the cabin. My final words to Martha on the phone were to feel free to check in early and use the pool. I also told her to call me on my cell if there were any, issues, questions, or concerns regarding their stay...I never received a call.
