About Kelly Lipsey

Pat and Sue Tighe live in Statesville, NC. Pat is a pilot and I am an appraiser. We live in Statesville, NC and love to pack up our 4 dogs and head to the Smoky Mountains. The dogs love it too. They especially love to go for walks around the community. Roxy likes to look for turkeys and Blackie is a big black shaggy dog and some day may be mistaken for a black bear!

Why Kelly Lipsey chose East

We chose Shagbark and the Smoky Mountains for our vacation rental because we love the mountains and it is within close driving distance of our home in NC. We have been visiting there for many years and always enjoyed staying with Pat's sister, who also owns a home in Shagbark. We thought it was time to buy our own home so we could go up more often and be close to her when she retires and spends more time there.

What makes this cabin unique

Even though our cabin is located in a peaceful and relaxing setting, it is close to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. There is so much to do in the area including hiking, waterfalls, shopping, wildlife, restaurants and also lots to do for the kids...Dollywood, swimming, tubing, go carts.

we had a party of 6 adults and a small dog and had plenty of room in this cabin, worked out great for us, easily accessible from the main road, plenty of room for parking 2 vechicle's excellent mountain views and fresh air , if you want to keep the coons out of your garbage cans, when your done for the night slide them in the laundry room. we loved our time here and would like to thank the owners for sharing their beautiful cabin with our family, I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone.

Disappointing cabin in the mountains

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was fairly nice and worked ok for our family (6 adults and one infant). We didn't realize how far up the mountain it was and how far out it is from things to do in town, so we were disappointed with the location. It did have beautiful views over the mountains, we just got tired of the 20-30 min drive to/from Pigeon Forge. We were very glad to be able to take our dog with us to this cabin; she had lots of fun chasing the raccoons off the back porch every morning and trying to catch the bugs and spiders in the bathrooms. It would be nice if there had been curtains or blinds on the master bathroom window. Despite the great view of the mountain and a neighboring house, I would prefer the feeling of privacy that window coverings provide. The igniter on the grill didn't work so we had to use a lighter to get it to light. We tried to use the hot tub but it was more of a lukewarm tub, so we only stayed in it for a few minutes. The wifi service was spotty, so don't plan on being able to connect to the Internet while you are there. We had a good time and enjoyed being together as a family but we won't visit this cabin again.

We stayed a week and had a good time but so much was wrong with this cabin and for the price we paid I expected it to be in better condition. First off the pics of the two bedrooms upstairs are deceiving and there is no downspout by the master bedroom sliding glass door so that's pretty loud. Every cabin in the area had a locked garbage bin to keep bears and racoons out of it, this cabin has cans on back deck which the racoons got into every night. The air went out on us and couldn't be fixed next day, my problem is the hous was hot and not one window had screens. So we couldn't even open windows due to the bugs. Beds not very comfortable and really hot due to a plastic cover for mattress. Zero lighting by hot tub and the heat for it never worked. The basement is under construction not a big deal had a nice pool table down there problem, the dryer vents down through the celing making it incredibly hot to even be down there, that can't be safe either. I don't normally complain but like I said for the price we paid I expected a much nicer cabin. We've been to this resort 3 times and have paid less for a much better cabin. I'm sure we will be back but def won't be looking to stay in this cabin again.

First let me start off by saying we had a wonderful 4 night stay at this cabin. It snowed our first night coming into the cabin, but still got there with no issues. It was nice having the security gate up front because the high winds caused lots of unexplained noises. :)

The inside of the cabin is every bit as beautiful as the pictures show, and the abundance of board games was nice for the family. We also LOVED the wood burning fireplace. Every other cabin we looked at had gas. The Kroger down Wears Valley Road (don't go over 35 on this rd it's a speed trap) sells bundles of wood, but we had to use starter logs to really get their wood going.

The view is awesome, and it is one of the few lots that doesn't require you to drive up a steep driveway.

Nice distance from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, but far enough away to feel like you're out away from it all.

All in all we had a great time.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because of the living room furniture. It was not very comfortable. And, the hot tub cover looked like it was falling in on the hot tub, so we decided not to mess with it.

One suggestion: We have experienced in other cabins we have rented is that they have spices and some other essentials around the kitchen. I would imagine this is primarily due to people purchasing them and leaving them behind, but it sure helps out when cooking so you don't have to go buy all new spices for limited use.

All in all a great time and would definitely rent Appalachian Sunset again.
