La Capanna, italian for 'The Cabin'

This is how it all started:

My grandfather, Guido Giacometti, came to Hawaii in 1902 to work at Olaa Plantation. He had a chemical engineering degree from the Polytechnic school in Zurich. He was born in Northern Italy, which at the time was ruled by Austria. He came here because the sugar industry was expanding, and the opportunity for a young engineer was far better than staying in Europe. He assisted in the construction of the mill and its machinery, and remained Mill Superintent for more than 40 years. He bought La Capanna in the 1920s, as a weekend place away from the hot weather at lower elevations. Volcano Village was a new neighborhood sold to many folks who wanted the same conditions. He spoke German, Italian and other languages, and became a good friend of Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar, the first volcanologist who lived at Volcano and helped to set up the USGS observatory. I remember going to the Jaggar home with my grandfather, and being rather bored with the foreign language discussions that the two men held. Though Guido did not speak Greek, he was a good friend of George Lycurgus, the well-known operator of the Volcano House Hotel, within the Park. The house saw plenty of use, especially during eruptions at Kilauea Caldera. My parents lived in Kona and friends and family used the place for years. My mother died in 1997, and the place was empty until we renovated it in 2002. Now we are happy to have others enjoy it as a vacation spot.

The property includes a fenced back yard, which allows us to bring our Brittanys when we visit. Renters can arrange for their pets as well, with advance booking.

Volcano Village in the last several decades has attracted a number of artists, and there are many studios and other artisan activities. The Volcano Art Center is close by.

The Friends of Hawaii Volcano National Park is a local organization that works with the National Park personnel to sponsor hikes, lectures and other activities relating to the volcano environment.

Alternatively, La Capanna provides complete facilities for a quiet stay. Phone, cable television, and wireless internet service is provided. We try to provide a number of aging books for the curious.

Finally, our guest book, which began with my grandparents in 1927, provides a history of many visits, with amusing comments. Please visit, enjoy, and record your thoughts for history!

Volcano Village is less than a mile from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance on Big Island. The village is a small, rural place, populated by a diverse community including many artists and near a number of high quality restaurant experiences.

La Capanna is a vacation home available for short term rental. The cabin is fully restored, with three bedrooms, two baths and a full kitchen. It comfortably sleeps six, and is less than an hour from beaches and other parts of the Big Island of Hawaii’s easterly side.

It is at 3800 foot elevation, with a cool and sometimes damp climate. The cabin has a wood burning stove, cable TV, internet access and local telephone service. Wireless telephone reception is excellent, with a Verizon cell site within a few hundred feet.

A trip to the Big Island should include time at the world class resorts of the Kona-Kohala Coast, and a few days or more in the cool uplands exploring the volcanoes that made the place, and are still at work.

While visiting the Volcano area, don't forget to take in the Farmer's Market on Sundays where you'll find plenty of friendly Volcano residents that are willing to share stories of the area and partake in the fresh foods and crafts made and grown locally.

About Donna

I think you'll appreciate the natural wood interior and the native plants throughout the yard. The house is considered a copy of Adirondack architecture, and has been included in the historic home tours of the village. We were fortunate to have a master renovation architect and contractor when we brought the place to current standards.

When we visit, I like to bring my Brittany dogs to run in the cool volcano air and they love it! The backyard and that makes an excellent yard for children as well as pets if they have been approved at the rental.

Many family adventures have occurred here, and I hope you'll be able to create your own too. Hiking trails throughout the park will keep you busy, but don't forget to walk the streets of Volcano Village too.

Why Donna chose Volcano Village

This Hawaiian - Italian home has been in the family for years..just read the guest book! Volcano Village is a special place, and that is why it has drawn travelers from all over the world. I love the sensitivity of the local artists, and the beauty surrounding the place.

What makes this cottage unique

Take in the complete offerings of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Watch the Volcano Erruption movies, visit the local Art Gallery, hike the trails and drive to watch the volcano flow, the latter subject to the whims of Madame Pele, our volcano goddess!

Rustic Cabin With Historic Presence

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully remodeled historic cabin located conveniently in the Volcano Village area. Walking distance to dining establishments; small grocers and galleries.

Lots of blankets, towels, real dishes, huge back yard for dogs. Pet friendly and affordable in comparison to other accomodations in area.

Easily sleeps six and comfortable for even 8 if needed.

We will return! Enjoy! Great responsive management team if any concerns.

Great location, great house in Volcano

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for one week in August. The fireplace was out of order but it wasn't an issue since it was a particularly hot week. We even had to open the windows if we were around during the day to cool the place off. It is on a "busy" corner, but at night when we were sleeping, there was no traffic on Wright Rd. The house has everything you need, including a laundry room stocked with detergent and dryer sheets, just bring your clothes and toothbrush. Tip - if you're coming in from Hilo or Kona, stop and get your supplies before heading to Volcano. More variety and you'll save $$. It's also within walking distance of the general store and a few restaurants if you don't feel like cooking. The fenced yard is great. Our nieces and nephews came over one afternoon and were able to run around worry free while the adults socialized. My husband enjoyed looking at the old photos throughout the house and reading through the old guest books - definitely a treat if you've got a history nerd in your household. The house is not modern - it is typical of most houses in Volcano. We were very satisfied with the cabin feel, it's what we were looking for. We would definitely stay here again in the future. Donna was great in answering all of our questions before we arrived.

Owner's Response: Thank you Nadiera for writing up this nice review. For others that may wonder about the fireplace; it is back in working order again. With winter months ahead; it may be needed.

Okay but not kid-safe

  • 3 of 5

I traveled with my family, 6 adults and two young kids. There was ample room, and the kitchen was well-stocked with supplies that normally wouldn't be found in other rentals (ie, condiments, cleaning, laundry and paper supplies). The utensils were also of good quality and more than enough for what we needed. The washer and dryer were in working order, but the laundry room flooded on account of a leak in the tub where the water drained. I just swept the water out every now and then, and because of our hectic schedule I didn't have time to contact the agent. We just didn't do laundry another time.

There are bumps on the floor where apparently extensions were made on the original structure (eg, each bedroom and bathroom door, the kitchen area) so we had to be conscious of them so as not to trip. Each inner door had a thin metal latch that jutted about two inches out, and I needed to keep reminding the children (and myself) about them. Brushing against any of these latches can scrape your arm. It'd be great if the cottage could be made safer in this aspect.

All told, the place served our purpose well. Thank you for letting us use your property.

Owner's Response: Thank you Odette, It is good to hear of the items that different guests may consider good or bad. I did know about the laundry sink and the work order was in to replace it which did happen right after your visit. Sorry we couldn't get it done sooner. I'll check on the latches you mention; I don't know about that ; but will look into it! I'm glad you had a good stay. We have been working on several improvements in the past month, and the laundry sink has been replaced as well as the collar on the fireplace so that no smoke escapes from it. We've also recently replaced all the sheets and alot of the linens and pillows. Generally giving the place a new face lift!

time to connect

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed getting cozy and ¨unplugging.¨ The home was rustic, cute, clean and lovely. We loved the fireplace and being able to bring our four legged family members! We loved our family time in the volcano flora yard. It was so much fun to learn of the long history of vacationers that we have now become a part of. We look forward to another stay at La Capana.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed yourselves! Yes; it's not Waikiki, but a far removed country cottage. I'd love to have you back; and will look forward to hearing from you in the future. Thank you for your kind words. Donna
