About the property

Steps from sandy beach, sleeps 6; two other cottages that sleep 6 and 2

This listing is for the Viking Cottage. See our other Firefly Cottages listings to reserve either or both of the other 2 cottages. We have 3 rustic waterfront cottages located on 1 acre of property, along a quiet road on the Lake Michigan side of the Door County Peninsula in Sturgeon Bay.

If you love the outdoors and enjoy activities like camping, our unique cottages may be just for you! They were built in the '50s and have loads of character and many return guests. They are rustic, so even after cleaning you may find a little sand and an occasional bug, just like at home. Firefly Cottages are more laid-back than a condo or hotel and over 95% of the guests enjoy their time immensely. But for the <5% who think they're getting a modern 21st century villa, these family style cabins may not be the place for you. We do boast a high recommendation and returning guest rate. The 3 cottages are located on 1 acre of property- the Viking and Nook up front, the Hideaway behind. Despite their close proximity to each other, a good deal of privacy is found with the layout of the yard and bushes. Bring your adventurous spirit and explore Door County with a home base of the finest beaches Door County offers; about 10 minutes from downtown Sturgeon Bay. See more pictures at the Google site at the bottom of this email. Don’t forget your suit and towel!

If you're looking for a romantic escape that includes sipping wine on the beach, listening to the still of the night and moonlit walks at the water's edge..or you'd like to recreate those childhood memories with your family without the intrusion of our modern "plugged-in" life, this is the place for you! Enjoy fishing, campfires, movie nights & fireflies.

Our cottages are perfect to escape the hustle & bustle!

THE VIKING, with beautiful water view sleeps 6. You'll find a double bed in the downstairs bedroom & 2 doubles in the loft (open-concept with steep stairs-NOT for toddlers!), full bath, kitchen including dishes, utensils and cookware (no dishwasher), wood burning fireplace and TV with antenna channels & DVD.

The largest cottage, THE HIDEAWAY, sleeps 6: queen in a sleeping area off the living room, 2 twins in a typical bedroom with a closing door and a -double/full in a walk-through (from the twin bedroom) sleeping area off the dining/kitchen. You'll enjoy a more woodsy setting in this cottage. It's set back about 100ft from the road & lake, behind the other 2 cottages. This spacious year-round cottage has a central furnace, woodstove-firewood-available at most local gas stations), large living area, kitchen-including dishes, utensils, cookware and a roll-across, attach-to-the-faucet type dishwasher (for well rinsed dishes..not the strongest water pressure), full bath, woodstove and TV with antenna channels & DVD.

The cozy, studio style NOOK is best for couples and is about 30' from the one lane road, across from which is our beach. It has a soothing water view, queen bed in the main room, (plus a sleeper sofa in the adjoining room-best for small kids-not forgiving for older backs), 3/4 bath, full kitchen including dishes, utensils & cookware and DVD-ONLY TV.

PLEASE NOTE This is a 3 season cottage that we only rent into October; heated by baseboard heaters and a small propane wall heater-no central furnace-so it can be chilly if the weather's cold.

Linens: All cottages are supplied with one set of sheets and bedding per bed and several dish towels & cloths, at the beginning of your stay. There is not a daily housekeeping service and linens are not changed by us during your stay. Cottages are supplied with pillows, mattress pads, blankets and/or comforters. Bath Towels are not provided. Beach Towels are not provided.

Kitchens are supplied with glasses, dishes, pots/pans and a variety of cooking utensils. While these are full, functional kitchens, do not expect that they are gourmet kitchens. They are cottage-y, as in not always the newest appliances, dishes may not always match, etc.

Highchairs, booster chairs, strollers and cribs are not provided.

Paper/Cleaning Supplies: Beginning supplies are provided that include toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, hand soap and garbage bags. This supply is only to get you by for the first couple of days and will not be replenished by management during the stay. All additional items needed i.e. additional toilet paper, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, charcoal and lighter, firewood, soap, shampoo, etc are the guests' responsibility.

Each cottage has a charcoal grill & there is a shared fire pit on the beach. The Hideaway also has a fire pit of its own.

Our rustic cottages do not have A/C. Usually the lake breeze is perfect, but we have good 'ol fashioned fans on hand too. You'll have an opportunity to unplug- no WiFi (and sometimes spotty cell reception). TVs in the Viking and Hideaway are antenna channels only + DVD player. The Nook is DVD only. Our return guests welcome this step back in time :)

The cottages have MAXIMUM OCCUPANCIES of 6 Hideaway, 6 Viking & 2+ Nook (including children) & PARKING LIMITS of 2 vehicles per cottage (Hideaway & Viking only: possibly 3 if they're all compact). *Hideaway guests must park only on the cottage side of the shared driveway, in front of the Hideaway. Please ask me in advance if you're wanting to bring a small boat as one of your vehicles. This may work, but you must have prior approval.

*No camping/setting up tents outside the cottages or on the beach (a sun shade or see-through type shelter on the beach is fine).

About Irene Johnson

My fiance and I along with our 4 girls live in Green Bay and are never more than a phone call away if you need anything. We are pet lovers and you are invited to bring your well behaved (at least 1 year old) dog along for your stay. I truly love sharing this beautiful place.. seeing families and friends make memories. Just the other day, a letter in the guest book made me cry happy tears :)

Irene Johnson purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Irene Johnson chose Door County

These cottages are a part of me. My grandfather and his siblings acquired much of the property along this stretch of Lake Michigan in the 40's- way before it was a tourist-y area. They built family cottages as a getaway from their busy lives in Milwaukee. My parents took over the rentals from my grandpa before I was born..so I grew up building sandcastles on this beach and having slumber parties in these cottages. When my dad fell ill in 1999 I moved home to help take care of him and to oversee the rentals (known as Johnson's Cottages). Later that year, after his passing, I moved home for good and have been running them as Firefly Cottages ever since.

What makes this cottage unique

The walk down to the beach is meadow-y, leading to a perfect for relaxing or building sandcastles, lakeshore. The-sandy bottomed water, with a gentle slope, is perfect for swimming. The cottage road is one lane and has very little traffic-perfect for walking and biking. Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve is right up the road near the lighthouse and is a gorgeous place to hike!

Rustic but modern enough for comfort!

  • 4 of 5

The location of this cabin is perfect! Just a short beach walk from the ship canal pier. It's a bit rustic and some things could use updating, but the owners keep it clean and well stocked to keep you comfortable. The collection of books and DVDs was a nice luxury. The view out the front windows is excellent, especially during sunrise! And the beach might be across the street, but it doesn't seem that way. The road is very narrow and not heavily traveled and the beach begins immediately once you cross it.

We'll Be Back!

  • 4 of 5

After our grown children from out of state returned home from our stay, they called to ask that we go back next year! We fell in love with the rustic charm and the expansive beach, a perfect place for our family -- space to roam but also places to gather. Our special family time was made even more special when our oldest son proposed to the love of his life -- a forever happy memory of Firefly Cottages!.

Loveee The Nook !

  • 4 of 5

Stayed overnight for 2 nights. I was looking for a little get-away for my fiance and I for his birthday and was looking for a small intimate place. This place was just the ticket. I was expected a beach front, but not this close ! It was very enjoyable to listen to the waves at night whilst we were dozing off into sleep; despite the chilly weather. Although, we are not sure if we would be returning to this place once the weather gets warmed up. There are a lot of properties on this road and I would be worried that the area would be too eventful for our taste of a get-away. Regardless, this is a beautiful place.

Happy Guest

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted to give our grandchildren a place to remember forever so, starting in 1994, we have rented a Firefly cottage every summer. We chose Firefly Cottages because of the beautiful beach, the firepit where the grandchildren could roast weiners and make s'mores, and the reasonable price. Our dreams of making warm memories for our grandchildren came true. It was the highlight of their summers and now we are on to our second generation of happy guests.

To make memories of your own, I suggest you try Firefly cottages just once. You may fall in love, too. I

Quiet Lane

  • 5 of 5

We've rented the Firefly Cottage for several summers and have never been disappointed. We return every summer because both cottages are pet friendly!!! That being said, they are a bit on the rustic side, but so cozy and well equiped. The cabin is always clean when we arrive and in good repair. We love being off the beaten-path. Both cabins sit on a quiet lane with a great view of Lake Michigan, the beach is just steps away from your front door. We enjoy walking on the beach, riding our bikes into town, grilling dinner every night, visiting wineries, hiking in State Parks, visiting other towns in Door County and basically just relaxing from the everyday work world. We have recommended this property to friends and family members, who also have rented. I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants to take their well-behaved dog on vacation with them. The Innkeeper has always been accomodating and gracious to our group!!!! We love the Firefly and The Viking!!!

Great vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

This vacation spot is fantastic. This coming July will be my 7th year spending a week in lovely Door County. We are a walk across the road to the beach and the lake. Our dogs love to walk the beach and chase tennis balls in the water. We are very comfortable in our cottage.

Fall asleep and wake up to the soothing sounds of the waves. Have your morning coffee on the beach, campfire there at night and a stroll along the water. Our cottages are just across a quiet one lane road from one of the best beaches in Door County; the sandy Lake Michigan beach, in a woodsy rural area with the main activities being swimming, enjoying the beach, hiking just up the road in the nature preserve, fishing off the pier a short and beautiful walk up the beach or road and good ol relaxing.

The small city of Sturgeon Bay is just a 12 minute drive from our cottages and from there you can drive north and enjoy all that Door County has to offer. It is "The Cape Cod of the Midwest"!
