About the property

Steps from sandy beach, sleeps 6, gorgeous waterview, rustic, dog friendly

This listing is for the Viking Cottage. See our other 2 cottages at VRBO# 897656 (Nook), VRBO# 897655 (Hideaway) to reserve either or both of the other 2 cottages.

Rustic waterfront cottage located on 1 acre of property, along a quiet road on the Lake Michigan side of the Door County Peninsula in Sturgeon Bay.

Arrival 4pm or later; departure by 10am. Thank you!!

If you love the outdoors and enjoy activities like camping, our unique cottages may be just for you! They were built in the '50s and have loads of character and many return guests. They are rustic, so even after cleaning you may find a little sand and an occasional bug, just like at home. Firefly Cottages are more laid-back than a condo or hotel and over 95% of the guests enjoy their time immensely. But for the <5% who think they're getting a modern 21st century villa, these family style cabins may not be the place for you. We do boast a high recommendation and returning guest rate. The 3 cottages are located on 1 acre of property- the Viking and Nook up front, the Hideaway behind. Despite their close proximity to each other, a good deal of privacy is found with the layout of the yard and bushes. Bring your adventurous spirit and explore Door County with a home base of the finest beaches Door County offers; about 10 minutes from downtown Sturgeon Bay. See more pictures at the Google site at the bottom of this email. Don’t forget your suit and towel!

If you're looking for a romantic escape that includes sipping wine on the beach, listening to the still of the night and moonlit walks at the water's edge..or you'd like to recreate those childhood memories with your family without the intrusion of our modern "plugged-in" life, this is the place for you! Enjoy fishing, campfires, movie nights & fireflies.

You've found the perfect escape from the the hustle & bustle!

About Irene Johnson

My fiance and I along with our 4 girls live in Green Bay and are never more than a phone call away if you need anything. We are pet lovers and you are invited to bring your well behaved (at least 1 year old) dog along for your stay. I truly love sharing this beautiful place.. seeing families and friends make memories. Just the other day, a letter in the guest book made me cry happy tears :)

Irene Johnson purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Irene Johnson chose Sturgeon Bay

This property is a part of me. My grandfather and his siblings acquired much of the property along this stretch of Lake Michigan in the 40's- way before it was a tourist-y area. They built getaways from their busy lives in Milwaukee. My parents took over the rentals from my grandpa before I was born..so I grew up building sandcastles on this beach and having slumber parties in this cottage. When my dad fell ill in 1999 I moved home to help take care of him and to oversee the former "Johnson's Cottage". Later that year, after his passing, I moved home for good and have been running the business every since.

What makes this cottage unique

The walk down to the beach is meadow-y, leading to a perfect for relaxing or building sandcastles, lakeshore. The-sandy bottomed water, with a gentle slope, is perfect for swimming. The cottage road is one lane and has very little traffic-perfect for walking and biking. Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve is right up the road near the lighthouse and is a gorgeous place to hike!

Fall asleep and wake up to the soothing sounds of the waves. Have your morning coffee on the beach, campfire there at night and a stroll along the water. Our cottages are just across a quiet one lane road from one of the best beaches in Door County; the sandy Lake Michigan beach, in a woodsy rural area with the main activities being swimming, enjoying the beach, hiking just up the road in the nature preserve, fishing off the pier a short and beautiful walk up the beach or road and good ol relaxing.

The small city of Sturgeon Bay is just a 12 minute drive from our cottages and from there you can drive north and enjoy all that Door County has to offer. It is "The Cape Cod of the Midwest"!

Loved our stay! We took our dog with us and would definitely stay here again!

The cottage location is great! We all had a great time on the beach and were able to relax and watch tv if we felt like chilling out, too. There are also some fun hiking trails nearby that we went on. Would definitely recommend this place. We hope to come back again :)

Great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Viking with our family of five. We ate on the picnic table looking out at the waves every night and had a campfire on the beach most nights as well. It's really a great spot on the beach. It was a little cold to swim, but the view was worth every penny. Cabin is rustic but more than adequate. We had a great time!

Rustic but modern enough for comfort!

  • 4 of 5

The location of this cabin is perfect! Just a short beach walk from the ship canal pier. It's a bit rustic and some things could use updating, but the owners keep it clean and well stocked to keep you comfortable. The collection of books and DVDs was a nice luxury. The view out the front windows is excellent, especially during sunrise! And the beach might be across the street, but it doesn't seem that way. The road is very narrow and not heavily traveled and the beach begins immediately once you cross it.

We'll Be Back!

  • 4 of 5

After our grown children from out of state returned home from our stay, they called to ask that we go back next year! We fell in love with the rustic charm and the expansive beach, a perfect place for our family -- space to roam but also places to gather. Our special family time was made even more special when our oldest son proposed to the love of his life -- a forever happy memory of Firefly Cottages!.

Loveee The Nook !

  • 4 of 5

Stayed overnight for 2 nights. I was looking for a little get-away for my fiance and I for his birthday and was looking for a small intimate place. This place was just the ticket. I was expected a beach front, but not this close ! It was very enjoyable to listen to the waves at night whilst we were dozing off into sleep; despite the chilly weather. Although, we are not sure if we would be returning to this place once the weather gets warmed up. There are a lot of properties on this road and I would be worried that the area would be too eventful for our taste of a get-away. Regardless, this is a beautiful place.
