Luquillo is a beach town (surfers paradise) beautiful beaches for fun in the sun.
Near many attractions like the rain forest (El Yunque) bio bay horse back riding and many more.
There is security for your safety.
Golf at any one of the beautiful courses or a mountain adventure.
Alex & I are adventurous people & love the Caribbean, so we chose to move here from New Jersey. There's just so many things to do here on the island of Puerto Rico, it's not only beautiful but so are the people.
This is a Fabulous beach town not too busy with lots of fun very close by. Including us with just a 5 min. ride away. The building has a rap around balcony on the 2nd floor to enjoy watching the surfers which are a short block away. You also have the convenience of the town plaza for a quick breakfast to go or a ice cream for your desert. There is also a convenient store in the plaza, and our Mayor & police are across the plaza as well. Or just people watching. Walgreens & Supermarket is just 5 mins.by car cross rout 3.
Luquillo beach has several different types of beaches, which are surfing, calm with bathrooms & showers, little wavy for the beginners of board riding & surfing ( surfing lessons with boards are available).
My wife and I spent two nights in downtown Luquillo in January 2017 due to the location. The apartment is one block from "boarder's" beach and Boarders Restaurant, a mile from Amigo's grocery store, and a mile and a half from the Luquillo kiosks. Luquillo is an older community of 20,000 people founded in 1797. Many of the downtown buildings need repairs and/or paint. But we felt safe in the area. Welcome to Puerto Rico.
Richelle's building is one of the best kept buildings in the downtown area. She maintains three second story apartments above commercial space on the first level. The apartments each have their own bedroom, bathroom, and living space. They each share a kitchen, greeting room, and outside veranda. Richelle and her husband are actively involved in maintaining the property as they were both coming and going during our two day visit.
Our unit was clean and comfortable. We had a mini-fridge, safe, couch, TV, and air conditioning. There was activity outdoors in the evenings but it was quiet for sleeping. A walk home from dinner at Boarders Restaurant allowed us to experience the sounds of the Puerto Rican Coqui frog. Visitors can listen to a recording of the frog's evening chorus on the internet and then identify the sounds while in Puerto Rico.
If you want the local flavor of Luquillo, this is the place for you, providing you do not want fancy. This place is clean, homey and the hosts are lovely and very responsive. It was not clear in the posting that this was a shared kitchen which could have been a problem if the other suites were occupied and liked to cook. In hindsight, the affordable price should have been a clue.
Great local restaurants, lovely beach and easy access to El Yunque, the rainforest. Was very helpful to have a car and on-site parking was easy. Neighborhood, at first glance, makes you wonder, but it felt safe and everyone was quite friendly. Only drawback was 6am mass at the town square during lenten season could disturb sleep in front apartment where we stayed. But great fun hanging out on balcony to people watch. We would definitely return and bring friends!
Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) really enjoyed our stay at Ocean View Suites in the heart of Luquillo!
The owners, Alex and Richelle, were friendly, responsive and very very helpful in terms of accommodating our schedule and giving advice about local attractions, restaurants, etc.
This second-floor unit is in an older building located on Luquillo's main plaza, right next to La Pared beach. This is a nice, basic rental property.
The 3 suites available on this property are all arranged around a central lobby and shared kitchen. All areas are squeaky clean and very well maintained. The balcony wraps around so you can see the ocean, plaza and a view of the rainforest from the second floor. When we were there, the breeze from the ocean meant there were no bugs, but had there been, there is AC in the units and screens on windows. Beach chairs and plenty of beach towels are part of the deal - very useful!
A few things you should know that may be factors for you - though they were not for us:
* There are three levels of security (locks, etc.) for your room, but this rental is NOT located in a "gated" or security community. It's right downtown. We felt very safe here, but know this is a consideration for others. Parking is on street (we had no problems finding space) or in the lot across the street.
* This unit is on Luquillo's main plaza - fun for drinking coffee on the balcony and watching school kids head to school across the plaza, but less fun if people are driving through the plaza at night with the requisite LOUD radio. With doors shut and AC on, this was not a problem for us.
* Water pressure in the unit was variable when we were there; we think this was more about a municipal water issue than any problem with the unit itself.
The ENTIRE 3-unit space would be great for an extended family to share, something we are considering for future visits to the area.
This was a great place to get the flavor of Luquillo and Puerto Rico. It is in an older two story building with one side facing the city square and one side facing the beach. The square is a center of activity surrounded by small shops and hosts local concerts and other activities. The side facing the water has a clear view of the surfer beach about one block away over a seldom used parking lot. The building has a wrap around balcony with open views in both directions. It is wide enough for chairs and a small table which made for great water and people watching. There were several good restaurants within 3 blocks and the neighborhood seemed safe any time of day. Less than a mile away we had a shopping center with good grocery store and some fast food restaurants. Alex and Richelle were excellent hosts. They responded promptly during the booking process and answered several questions before we arrived. They helped with transportation and met us when we arrived. Our room was clean and comfortable. We shared a common kitchen with two other rooms, but never had a conflict. Seems like most of us didn't cook much even though the kitchen was very well equipped. Most days, we just walked to the beach and turned left when we felt the sand on our feet. Some days we walked over 3 miles each way without ever leaving the beach. Most days, the beach area right in front of our place has real waves pounding in and you could watch surfers. As you headed west, the beaches were protected by barrier reefs. You could see waves crashing off shore, but the beach areas were sheltered and great for swimming. And, the beaches were not at all crowed even though we had 85 degree air temps with 80 degree water temps. One day we did the about 10 mile drive to the El Yunque Rainforest which is an interesting change of pace.
Very comfortable stay - we had everything we needed. Rooms are clean, space is good. Host was very friendly and helpful. Had breakfast every morning on a balcony with a view to the ocean! WiFi was somewhat slow. Would recommend!
