About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4) 1800 sf. ft. but feels like much more

Casa Del Panadero was recently remodeled to provide you with the modern comforts while preserving authentic Yucatan architecture and design. This home is ideally located just blocks from both the Plaza Grande (the center of Merida) and the famous Paseo de Montejo, with its restaurants, shopping and museums.

Casa del Panadero has all the rich architectural details of an original colonial home in Merida, such as the pasta and crema maya tiled floors, high ceilings and huge wooden doors, but with brand new amenities like three air conditioners, a swimming pool and central patio with fountain. The house is painted in rich, hacienda colors and just being inside the house promotes a sense of well being and relaxation. Breathtaking local artwork through out the house and two stone accent walls which will accentuate your stay !

There are two bedrooms. One in the front of the house, and one in the back by the garden and the pool. Both have king sized beds and their own newly renovated bathrooms with showers. Back master bedroom has a new hallway closet and dresser section built in . There is also a combination safe available for your valuables.

In the interior of the house is a living and media entertainment room, a dining room fit for 6 people and an interior patio with plants and a central fountain which opens up to a brand newly renovated kitchen with central island and amenitie's including all new appliances including a dishwasher. The water system has been upgraded to include a pressure system and soft watering system as well as a separate faucet at the sink which gives you bottled water for drinking. Panadero has upgraded internet which is reliable as well as a local phone for your use. A 32 inch TV and music system is available as well as Apple TV and Amazon Fire stick and echo to allow you to access your Netflix etc.

Behind the house is a tropical garden with a stone patio and a filtered swimming pool with a beautiful waterfall and light feature as well as an outdoor shower.

About Darren Woodson DVM

Darren and Margie Woodson are both veteranarians ( and business owners since 1985 , from Farmington New Mexico. They are parents of three children in their twenties and multiple dogs and cats and other menagerie in New Mexico This lovely home in Merida is a getaway for them, and they love to share it with others when they cannot be there themselves. Margie is originally from Puerto Rico and is obviously fluent in Spanish and Darren is from western Kansas I ( and not fluent but trying to learn ) They met at Kansas State Veterinary school.

Darren Woodson DVM purchased this house in 2009

Why Darren Woodson DVM chose Centro

We chose to buy a home in Merida because the city and surrounding countryside are gentle, gracious and endlessly fascinating. The city of Merida is the safest city in all of Mexico, and safer than most American cities... in violence, it is on a par with Wyoming and Montana... in other words, there is none. We love the Yucatan culture and the relaxed, welcoming and tranquil attitude of the people of Yucatan. It is really hard to explain the allure of Merida and the Yucatan , it really is different than the rest of Mexico and frankly just needs to be experienced.

What makes this house unique

When we are at Casa del Panadero, we love to wake up in the morning and enjoy a breakfast of coffee and local tropical fruit in our patio or now at the new kitchen island . We dip in and out of the pool all day when we are home. Or we go out for the day, exploring Mayan ruins or other colonial cities not far away from Merida, like Izamal or Tecoh. At night, Merida comes alive... so if we aren't enjoying our swimming pool again, we go out on the town. We can walk almost anywhere and enjoy free events like dancing, music and theatre at many of the barrio parke's . Casa Del Panadrro has the best location in Centro. As you can walk to everything , we also have two bikes for your enjoyment . As they say with real estate LOCATION, LOCATION , LOCATION !!!

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the moment we entered Casa Panadero we knew we had entered a special home. The colors, the furniture, the outdoor spaces, the great detail in maintaining the colonial charm of the home. Our stay was so relaxed and the property manager for Casa Panadero , Silvia, could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Darren was always avilable ,either by phone or e mail to answer any questions that I might have. That alone was a major reason for our renting Casa Panadero. My only suggestion would be to have the television hooked up to an antenna. Cable or satellite would have been nice, but the home is so calming and Merida is such a charming city, that spending time alot in front of a television would distract from those experiences. So there really isn't a great need for cable or satellite.

The house is perfectly located for a stay in Merida. After being greeted so warmly by the property manager Silvia, we settled right into the rhythms of Mexican life. The layout and design of the house are fantastic in every way. Breezes blow through open courtyard doors, and the gentle sound of fountains calms and cools. The showers are hot and the beds perfect for great sleep. There’s also a great kitchen for meals or mid-afternoon snacks. Tip: memorize an easy guacamole recipe, shop the local markets for a few ingredients, and enjoy!

I spent 3 weeks at Casa del Panadero over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Could not have picked a better place! Both the house and the location were top notch. I felt warmly welcomed by Silvia (property manager) with flowers, fresh fruit, coffee baked goods and orange juice- so totally prepared to settle in. Additionally, the owners (very responsive and helpful) left a picture book of Yucatan locations and a bottle of wine. I'm a "foodie" and enjoyed cooking in the totally redone, the house was within walking distance to the "Slow Food" market on Saturdays. In fact, its within walking distance to absolutely anything Centro has to offer. The pool is a private sanctuary- I was in it every day. A fountain in the pool and a fountain in the central courtyard provided a wonderfully soothing sound atmosphere.

A popular club, "La Negrita" is just a few doors down- great live music with a Cuban influence (it seemed to me). The music drifts easily to Panadero- yet the club keeps very reasonable hours, resulting in a perfect mix of quiet, tranquil days- upbeat early evenings- and quiet peaceful nights. Parque Santa Lucia is very close by and has a selection of maybe 6 outdoor patio-type restaurants to choose from (all good, btw) Great place for lunch and reading, I thought.

Casa del Panadero has been restored with quality materials, good design sensibilities, colors and textures... (I'm an art professor, so I do notice those things). It's truly an experience. All the work pays homage to the traditional colonial aesthetic, yet provides all those creature comforts we all want!

It's a special place- I hope to visit again. Thanks Darren and Margie for sharing your wonderful home!

Wonderful home for six weeks!

  • 5 of 5

Casa del Panadero is a great house in a very central and convenient location that allowed me to walk everywhere. I loved the high ceilings, multiple places to sit and relax, and the pool. It really did look like the pictures! The owner was pleasant to deal with, and Silvia, the local manager, was attentive. As a single female, I felt very safe in Merida, and would recommend it to anyone.

We LOVE casa del Panadero!

  • 5 of 5

We have spent a total of 5 months at Panadero: one three month stay 2 years ago andanother 2 month stay this last winter.

Can't say enough positive about our experience. The house is wonderful in every respect.

It's in a great location, a short stroll to the Plaza Grande, Paseo Montejo and the Santiago barrio as well.

The owners are marvelous folks whom we never met but felt like they were true friends nevertheless.

It's very important when renting a wonderful old colonial in Mérida that you have a responsive and responsible property manager on call who can help with concerns both major and minor that do come up.

Panadero has the absolute BEST representative in Silvia. We actually become dear friends and her close relationship to Panadero's owners only makes it easy for guests to feel part of a family.

The fact that we won't be able to return to Mérida next winter opens up the opportunity for you to rent this enchanting house. Don't hesitate, I guarantee you will be thrilled.

A great relaxing stay at the Casa del Panadero

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 8 nights at the Casa and we were sorry to have to leave it so soon! The time spent at the Casa was simply delightful. We were met by Silvia, the house manager, who showed us around the property and explained everything to us. The house itself is quite large, with two good-sized bedrooms, a large living room, dining room and kitchen as well as a private patio. At the back is the small pool and patio. Every room in the house is well decorated with mostly high-quality Mexican handicrafts. The house is on a quiet street, and because of the thick walls, what little street traffic there may be goes unnoticed. There is AC but we rarely had to use it as the walls retain the cool of the night through the day. We had to remind the manager to come clean the pool as it had not been cleaned on our arrival. The caretaker took care of this on the next day, so we were able to enjoy the pool the rest of the week. The kitchen is well equipped and this allowed us to cook many of our meals.

We appreciated the welcome bottle of wine, the 6-pack of cold beer, the fruit basket and the pastries on our arrival. A very nice touch!

We had no problem parking our car and the old man José took special care of us, keeping a parking place on the street for us. A few pesos a day tip was all it took. Since the Casa is only 5 blocks from the center of town, we were able to walk to most of the restaurants and shops. There is a Walmart store a bit further away which has a good selection of wine and liquor, as well as all the veggies, meat etc. you need.

The listing photos are bang-on.

The refund on the security deposit took about a month to arrive (the owners have to wait to get the electricity estimate before being able to calculate the refund and send it on).

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the Casa del Panadero and will certainly recommend it to our friends.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed your stay . It does take about 5 to 7 days to get electricity amount and our goal is to get the deposit back with in ten days at the most. We did and do have some logistic financial issues between the USA and Canada with money exchange and finally figured out that a money order was the best route which did delay your deposit return , Thanks again Darren and Margie
