About the Villa: The Villa, with modern amenities/furnishings and gorgeous views, lies in a gated 'jungle neighborhood' on the hillside of the stunning Ojochal valley. Engage in the true Costa Rica experience, the comfort of quiet neighbors, the security of a gated community, and maintained roads. Enjoy the howler monkeys in the surrounding mountains, or bird-watch from the Villa or on your short walks to breathtaking unobstructed ocean views, and local rivers and streams.

The Villa has high wood ceilings with ceiling fans in every room and zonal air conditioning in each of the four bedrooms. A large open semi-circular living area greets all customers. Off of the semi-circle are the entrances to the bedrooms and one full bathroom. Across from the main seating area four large sliding glass doors lead outside to the gorgeous tropical garden. Beautiful, colorful established native plants and palm trees surround a pool and lounge area with views of lush tropical vegetation, and the “whales tale” of the Marina Ballena bay in the distance. A high mountain behind the Villa contains ”secretive” howler monkeys that call to each other in the morning. The Villa is a bird watchers paradise; toucans, kiskadees, flocks of green parrots, and many others are frequent visitors. The pool has a 'BaduJet Swimjet Treadmill' which creates a current allowing you to swim 'in-place' for exercise, water-play, or massage.

The 'conveniences of the Villa': The kitchen has modern appliances which include a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, stove, blender, toaster, garbage disposal, dishwasher, and an Italian brand coffee/expresso/cappuccino maker. The plentiful exotic wood cabinets come appointed with place settings and cookware. A complete laundry room with washer and dryer is on-site. The home also has a new 46' LED Samsung HD television including surround sound in the Great Room, an additional flat screen LED TV in one of the master bedrooms, Satellite TV with 40+ international stations, and a DVD player. The Villa is served by wireless internet and also has an all-in-one printer/scanner available.

The town of Ojochal is five minutes by car from the Villa and offers a world class restaurant (the “Exotica”), authentic French bakery, well-stocked grocery store, and a bar/restaurant frequented by visitors and locals alike. Ojochal is halfway from Dominical and the local Palmar Sur airports.

Between Ojochal and Dominical are at least 6 amazing beaches, with caves, arches, and surfing. The larger town of Uvita is 15 minutes from Ojochal and offers two large continental-type super-markets, three banks with ATM machines, hardware stores, gift shops, a bus stop on the inter-city line, excellent medical and dental care, a visitor's center, and several bar/restaurants.

Or just relax by the Villa pool and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature all around! In the evening enjoy the calm and temperate weather of the outdoors, or the modern 'pleasures' that come with the Villa.

About Alan Hernried (Owner)

I grew up in an international family. My first trip to Europe was at the age of 12. At 16, I spent three months traveling by myself, through most of Western and Eastern Europe (before the fall of the Berlin Wall). I’ve lived and studied in France and Spain and am fluent in both languages.

In addition to my international interests, I play the piano and the guitar. I enjoy the ballet as well as the symphony, and currently sing in an auditioned 100 person semi-professional choir that performs in my home's (Eugene, OR) main concert hall.

My educational interests have always been in science and mathematics. I have studied at Dartmouth College; and received B.S., M.S., and Ph. D. degrees in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. I have been a regular faculty member (professorial rank) at the University of Utah and Oregon State University.

A passion of mine has been fine woodworking. My work has been displayed at some of the finest galleries on the west coast and can be seen at

My wife and I are retired, love five children between us, and a grandchild who lights up our lives.

Alan Hernried (Owner) purchased this villa in 2010

Why Alan Hernried (Owner) chose Ojochal

I came to Costa Rica for my first visit relatively late in my life. During that trip, I found what is now 'Villa Tranquila.' I fell in love with both the property, the people, and the country. A truly unique, unspoiled, tropical paradise. A place to 'get away from it all,' return to a slower pace of life and a greater proximity to nature and all that it has to offer

What makes this villa unique

I treat my clients as honored guests, and offer them a 'once in a lifetime' experience. Their enjoyment is my own. I know that you will be thrilled by waking to the calls of howler monkeys or to a cacophony of birds. You’ll savor the temperate year round climate, swimming in the warm, clear ocean at the close unspoiled and unpopulated beaches nearby. At the Villa itself, you can lounge by the pool, watch satellite TV stations with family and friends on the 46' LED HDTV with surround sound at night, surf the wireless internet available on your personal device, or just relax in the luscious gardens and watch the sun set over an unspoiled tropical and ocean vista,. Villa Tranquila is not to be missed.

Super villa for a family

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 7 and 9 year old just spent a great 7 days at villa tranquila. It is tucked away in the mountain, a 10 minute drive from the main road, and it’s a fun bumpy ride to the gated community. We spent nights eating outside by the pool, watching the sun set and the stars come out, along with all the birds and sekedas.

The villa has a a really big living space and a fully equipped kitchen, with all the rooms off that main space. It works really well. The pool is small, but it has this great swim in place feature, that the kids loved.

All the rooms have fans- we didn’t need to use the air con at all.

Ojochal is really well located- 10 mins to Uvita and 25 to dominical. We did day trips to many sights, spent afternoons at various beaches, or by the pool. Ojochal has a fully stocked supermarket in town - everything you need. No need to go to Uvita at all.

Now Alan: from the time we iniitally inquired about the place in September, to the time we checked out, Alan was a star. He has a great set of PDFs he sends you after payment is received, and it has all the details you need for a great visit. And he was fully available by text for any inquiries. We texted more than a few times, and he was very responsive.

If you are planning a trip to the pacific coast, Alan’s place is a perfect place for a home base. Enjoy!

Wonderful house in Ojochal

  • 5 of 5

We loved this small town. It was away from the major tourist areas but with plenty to do and see. We went to a new beach everyday, saw waterfalls, zip lined over the osa canopy and dined in a different restaurant each evening. The road to this house is a little ways out but the gated community was well taken care of. The house was clean and offered a lot of the basic needs from kitchen to bathroom.

We stayed at Villa Tranquila for the entire two weeks we were in Costa Rica. What a fabulous part of the country -- green, lush, and not very busy at the beginning of December. Thank you Alan for letting us stay in your home. If you are the kind of person who likes a quiet, peaceful spot in the lush jungle up the side of a mountain, then this place is for you! We felt very safe in this gated community. We don't regret for one second staying in this magical place. We will never forget the clouds/mist touching down on the mountain behind us, the hawks circling above, or the bird songs constantly around us. I was always up early sitting in the comfy sling chair by the pool. You will have to use the broom to sweep the jungle away occasionally, as there is no caretaker. Although we only used one of the four bedrooms (firm mattresses), we enjoyed the large lofted living room in the evenings, often listening to a hockey game using the wifi, since we can't speak Spanish and couldn't watch tv (probably a good thing). Load some movies on your ipad instead. It was awesome having laundry facilities. The kitchen had lots of dishes; we brought our own spices from home, which came in handy. Hand soap, dish soap, dishwasher soap are all provided. We used the little cooler in the cupboard for a day trip to the beach. There are two small grocery stores in Ojochal; one near the entrance at the highway and another a bit further up the road. We also shopped in Uvita, where there are two larger grocery stores right along the main highway. The drive up to Villa Tranquila from the highway is about 10 minutes. The roads are narrow and steep in some places and often full of potholes, but who cares in this little piece of paradise? We had no trouble, even after a downpour that lasted all morning, with our little 4x4 vehicle. We loved visiting restaurants in the area – our favorite place was at La Cusinga Lodge, Aracari restaurant (close to Uvita) -- friendly staff, great food, wonderful view and trails. There was also Exotica (amazing dining), the Bamboo Room, with live entertainment and a great view. Mama e Papa had affordable and tasty Italian food (pizza!) and lovely grounds. The Lookout and Ballena Bistro were nice too, all close to where you turn off the main highway to go into Ojochal. Near Domincal was Villas Alturas, with its wildlife rescue facility you can tour and support; afterwards have lunch and enjoy the view. Have fun!

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay, especially for family. We had 4 in our group. Villa Tranquilla is well maintained and is located in a very nice gated neighborhood. Sitting by the pool we say parrots, toucans, howler monkeys, coatis, and many beautiful birds. Annoying insects were minimal to none. The neighborhood is quiet, except for the small river you can hear near by. A short walk up the hill provides unbelievable ocean, mountain views. Alan, the owner is quick to respond with any questions or concerns. We stayed a month and were extremely happy with our choice!

Peace, Nature and Adventure

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate enough to stay at Villa Tranquila in Mid-April. The house is located in a secure, gated community. It is beautiful, well planned, very clean and equipped with all the modern conveniences. The grounds are truly stunning, with too many varieties of exotic plants to name. We awoke to the birds singing up the sun each morning and enjoyed sipping coffee poolside. The mountain in back is mesmerizing. The surrounding jungle is home to a troop of howler monkeys that announce their presence in the mornings and evenings. Toucans and macaws fly overhead, while several varieties of hummingbirds visit the abundant flowers. There are many things to do in the area for those visitors who crave adventure and eco-tourism. Don't miss snorkeling Cano Island and hiking the Corcovado. There are also river trips, horseback rides and mangrove tours. We visited at least five beaches, with Playa Pinuela and Playa Ventanas being the favorites. Ojochal is more of a community than a town, with many restaurants tucked away. Definitely stop at the sodas for the traditional meal and a pina naturales. We left with regret and will certainly be back. Thank you, Alan and Terry, for a memorable stay.
