Ocean Front 3 Bedroom House in Chatham Cape Cod with great sunset views.

About the property

Ocean Front 3 bedroom house with views of the Nantucket Sound in Chatham

Welcome to RiverWatch! Have a fantastic trip and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Cape Cod. The house you are looking at was built in 1927, and has housed four generations of our family. It's a three bedroom house with two porches overlooking the Nantucket sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Expansive views of the ocean and the meadows. You can walk to the water's edge right from the house to the marsh,(but we don't swim there) or take a longer walk to the beach (10 minutes), or into the little town of South Chatham that has a fun family cafe and an upscale restaurant. A short drive north is the town of Chatham known for its band concerts on Friday nights, great seafood, shopping and art galleries. In the other direction is Harwich with its majestic boat harbors, fish shanties, and the go-karts.

The Cape is known for its long stretches of beaches. A favorite beach of ours is Hardings Beach, about a 10 minute drive. You can purchase a weekly or daily pass ($60 per week), and there is ample parking, life guards, toilets, and ice cream trucks. Park in the lot farthest from the entrance and take a nice walk to the light house in the distance at Stage Harbor Entrance. We also suggest that you have a sense of when high and low tide is, as the weather can frequently change with the tide. So what seems like a cloudy day can become sunny when the tide direction flips. There is a reason for the saying “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute…”. Google “cape cod tides” and look for Stage Harbor tide charts. Another excellent beach is Ridgevale, which is a bit closer and has a nice sand bar with water on both sides for those looking for a quieter place to swim or a place to let the little ones explore. Chatham Sailboat operates from Ridgevale for those looking to rent a sailboat or paddle board.

Sunsets: We love a beach in the town of Orleans called Skaket. It’s on the Bay side of the Cape, so it offers a different experience, including beautiful sunsets. When the tide rolls out at Skaket, the sand bars stretch on and on and on. It’s great for exploring and looking for crabs, and the beach is popular with children for that reason.

Chatham Light Beach: The Chatham Light and Beach offer remarkable views, but parking is difficult and the water is colder because of the direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. We suggest looking but not swimming.

Provincetown & Outer Beaches: For those looking to explore, a drive up route 6 offers a chance to see the outer beaches with its wild sand dunes, and cold rough waters.

Band Concert: A fun family tradition is the Chatham Band Concert that happens every Friday night at 8 pm at the Kate Gould Bandstand in the middle of town. The event is perfect for all ages, and they have dances for the kids. A trip to the Chatham Candy Manor before band concert makes the evening that much sweeter.

About Colin Gillis

My wife live in New York City with our son. We were married in Chatham in September 2001 and we have a boy who is now 7 years old. We try to balance out the uniqiness of raising a child in NYC by letting him have lots of time on the Cape to feel the sand on his toes, taste the wind, run around naked a bit, and find a quiet spot to hear the song of the bob white birds.

Colin Gillis purchased this cottage in 1927

Why Colin Gillis chose Cape Cod

The house has been in the family for four generations. Its a very special place. 2014 was the first year we decided to open it up to our friends on HomeAway. We made many improvements over the season and this winter to help our guests. The biggest one we did just recently -- we added heat and air conditioning! This has extended the season by several months. We also purchased really nice outdoor deck furniture and cushions and lots of smaller items like a gas grill, a coffee maker, more plates & cups, new indoor furniture and TVs. The prior year we did major items like new sliding glass doors in the living room to let the view shine in, and we planted hydrangeas along the edge of the road. This is our home, our son is named Chatham, and we really care about the house. It is where our heart beats and the birdsong in the yard is the tune we carry inside of us. We want to share it with loving people, this is not a party spot, and its a classic old school cape house regardless of the small luxury that has been added. You will have to run thru the rain to take a hot shower outside, and if you have never done that in life, try it because it feels real good. We work hard to make each trip a success, and honestly we don't overly grumpy people, they can stay at the Crusty Crab Inn. We want you to feel the decades of little feet picking up shells, learning natures lessons, and realize at the end of the day just how good you feel.

What makes this cottage unique

Gorgeous sunsets, views of a lighthouse in the distance, and you can see the light from Chatham lighthouse coming faintly over the water at night. Watch for the moon to rise up out of the Ocean, its one of the prettiest things we have ever seen.

Special location with specatacular views in cute rustic cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had a phenomenal stay at River Watch. A spectacular view and cozy deck provided endless hours, day and night, to sit, relax and enjoy nature. Every day two Ospreys caught fish and flew practically overhead, a family of 6 Egrets perched in the nearby tree and fished the flats, and the rhythm of the tides and quiet activity on the river and bay in front of us was a special experience. A beautiful rustic cabin, with plenty of air flow and breeze provided the perfect relaxed Cape experience. A truly special place.

Beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

River Watch is the right name for this place. The views of the marsh and Nantucket Sound from the large back deck are truly spectacular. We enjoyed having coffee out there in the morning and cocktails at night while watching the Marsh Hawks hunt for fish and build their nests. The house is historic but very well kept and equipped with good amenities. Our family of four was quite comfortable there. It's in a great location--peaceful but just a couple of miles from Chatham. The owner couldn't have been nicer and was very responsive to inquiries. Plus members of his family live all around (the road is named after them) and they were friendly and helpful. We recommend River Watch without hesitation. Makes for a great family getaway.

Owner's Response: Jon Brose and his family are the perfect people to connect with in the shared economy world. They are fantastic communicators, they charmed our neighbors Angie & Bill, and we built trust between each other. This is one of the oldest houses on Cape Cod, which makes it special. This family was incredibly gentle, patient, flexible and friendly. Thank you so so much, Jon, for being you. You charmed everyone on the street. My brother hopes to give you a boat ride next year! Enjoy the stoneware, don't forget how nice those outdoor showers are, and thank you again for being the nice person you are with a fantastic family. Please come back!

Beautiful views, everything you need

  • 4 of 5

The views from the cabin are amazing, it's easy to get to many great places in less than 20 minutes, the cabin has everything you need, is beautiful, and the outdoor shower is a nice treat. The owner is friendly and helpful.

However, you can't really walk to the water's edge - you can get to the marshy grass but it's still 30-50 feet before there's actually water. Also all of the rooms in the cabin are actually one big room with dividing walls- all rooms (except for one bedroom and the bathroom) share the same ceiling. Meaning that everyone can hear each other perfectly throughout the cabin and if a light is on it lights up all of the rooms. Maybe not a big deal for some but something that is good to know ahead of time.

Overall a really great place to stay- we had an amazing time.

Will not rent this cottage again.

  • 2 of 5

My wife and I spent a week at the cottage in August 2016. We love Cape Cod and this area. We were disappointed/unhappy with the cottage. We have been vacationing at the Cape for over 20 years and have never had a bad experience until now. Walking up to the cottage I noticed a security camera and it made us uneasy wondering if there were cameras inside. The owner never addressed that with us. The cottage was not clean, dirty stained mattress covers and pillows (owner said he was going to order new ones), gaps and holes in the screens in the screened in porch allowing bugs inside, two sliders for the living room and neither slider screen locked so we were not comfortable with leaving the sliders open at night for fresh air, outdoor patio furniture for living room furniture, air conditioning unit ineffective. The owner had said he wasn’t happy with the A/C but honestly, it didn’t take the edge off as he indicated it would. We purchased box fans. We found Colin accommodating and very pleasant to deal with up front. Once we communicated our dissatisfaction to him he was indifferent to how unhappy we were with his cottage. After giving him several opportunities to deal with our dissatisfaction with no results I requested a refund of some of the rent. He responded with what I understood to be an offer and asked if it would it make us happy. I replied yes and then didn’t hear back from him. After seven days went by I contacted him again expressing frustration with zero communication from him. Six days later he responded to my email and accused me of extortion by using the review process. I was simply following the steps gives for trying to resolve a problem with an owner. Step 1, contact the owner. You know how that went. Step 2, write a review. Step 3, get HomeAway involved.

Great Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

This property is exactly as described by the owners, and then some. Amazing views and great deck to entertain upon. Colin and Louise were helpful in every way imaginable from dining hints and shortcuts to the closest beaches including the sandbAR in the pictures. And yes, the pictures are very representat I've of the property and views. My family, all lifetime Cape Coder all came to visit and were blown away with the deck views and privacy of the location. We are planning to return next summer. Property is close to Harwichport action than Chatham which is great by us as I am from Harwich and Main Street has so much to offer now with new additions for dining and entertainment without the Chatham crowds.
