The Merrick House is a unique, upscale home, architecturally designed to include a portion of the original historic (1840s) brick structure. It is located in scenic Guttenberg, IA, on River Park Drive with direct access to the Mississippi River, city park and river walk. Guttenberg was listed by Forbes Magazine as one of America's 20 prettiest towns. Relax on the 8x20 balcony or lower level porch and watch the barges pass the entry point of the lock & dam or enjoy the large outdoor hot tub. There are plenty of things to do in Guttenberg and the surrounding area for every season. Fly into Guttenberg and land at the island airport, enjoy a round of golf at Guttenberg Golf Club and delight in the breathtaking views, visit the Fresh-water Aquarium, Lock & Dam #10, Eagle Preserve, bike or hike. Within 20-35 minutes in either direction you can visit 2 river boat casinos, Pikes Peak State Park, Effigy Mounds State Park, shopping, antiquing, Amish country, and many wonderful restaurants. You can even enjoy a ferry ride across the Mississippi to Cassville, Wisconsin or Captain the owner's pontoon boat moored conveniently just across the park on a private floating dock.
Keywords: Wonderful home in historic Guttenberg, Iowa, just 35 minutes from Dubuque, IA or a 3.5 hour, picturesque drive from either Chicago or Minneapolis.
I enjoy recreating outdoors and this property is a a great place to start out and return to. I water ski, kayak, swim, and fish the river, or bike, hike, and run nearby parks and trails. The scenery is awesome whether I am on the water, road biking, or hiking in one of the state parks nearby.
Michael C. Shriver purchased this house in 2007
It's fun to just hang around the house if the weather doesn't cooperate or get outside when it does, and return to spacious serenity that invites one to relax and enjoy the comforts of a home with a well equipped kitchen, home theater system, and hot tub.
I have tried to allow our clients to have easy access to some of the things I like to do in the area. I've lost count of all the road, mountain, or hybrid bikes (including tandems) I make available free of charge. I also have one large and one smaller pontoon boat available for rent at reasonable prices.
This is my third stay at the Merrick House in two years and I am already planning on staying next year. My Mother and I met my brother and his wife there for a family get together and all really enjoyed their time in Guttenberg. It is one of the prettiest locals in the Midwest in my opinion and their is plenty to do especially in the fall with the leaves changing. Several nice places to choose from to dine out at. Riding bikes one day was a "new experience" for my mother since it had been over a decade since her last ride. The river was very high this stay so the fishing was poor compared to other times. The Merrick house itself was a novelty for the people in our party who had not seen it before but they all really enjoyed its style and accomadations. Would recommend staying there anytime of the year.
This house is absolutely gorgeous. Went last summer for memorial day, and going back again this July. Couldn't ask for a more relaxing atmosphere. This is one of the very best house/cabin my wife have stayed in about 40 trips. I would highly suggest booking a stay here, you will not regret it. The owner is extremely accommodating and very easy to work with.
Beautiful view of the river. Close to everything on the riverfront. On the days it rained, we visited a winery outside of town. Also took a trip up the river to quaint little towns and ended at Cabelas across the river in Wisconsin. Lots of bikes in garage to ride along the river or around town.

Mike, the owner, was very flexible in changing and adding dates to meet our changing schedule. I started my stay at Merrick House with co-workers, for a girlfriends overnight. We went to dinner, rented the pontoon for a ride with Jim, listened to a band in the park, and used the hot tub. Breakfast on the upper veranda before they left in the morning. My family arrived, and iIt got hot so we didn't use the hot tub again, but enjoyed boating, swimming and the A/C. We rented the pontoon each day with Jim as our captain (we paid him separately). It is moored on a small, private dock - lots of steps down the levee to the water. We had 7 adults, and all enjoyed the beautiful house for over a week! There are 5 levels - just gorgeous, but there were no railings on the stairs, so my mom (who was 89 and uses a walker) was limited to the first floor. We knew the house was not advertised as handicapped accessible, but Jim was so helpful in making arrangements to help my mom be comfortable and get her on the pontoon! The two porches are perfect to sit and watch the Mississippi and the occasional barges and boats go by. There is a park directly across the street with a paved walk along the river. We thought it might be really loud and busy, but the street and town are quiet, as is the river. Jim was our pontoon guide, and fit right in with our family. We used the gas grill and well-stocked kitchen, plus our own groceries. The pontoon was an older smaller one, but it did the job, and we had fun swimming at the huge sandbar. Jim and Mike were talking about getting the newer, larger pontoon ready to go when we left. My son went fishing with Jim and caught a huge fish - a Northern, I think! The downstairs bar area has a table where we played games and cards. There are only two bedrooms, plus a fold-down couch. My daughter and son-in-law slept on the couches in the downstairs and thought they were very comfortable! We also used the fold down couch and regular couch in the TV room , 1/2 flight down. The master bedroom and bath on the top floor is gorgeous, and you can lie in bed and see the river. We enjoyed Judy too, the caretaker. Suggestions to make this stay even better would be to add stair railings, and foldout couches in the living room and upstairs landing/sitting room. I meant to write this review right away last fall and send pics to Mike, but procrastinated. I highly recommend this house for a relaxing, beautiful getaway!
I took my mother and son for a 5 night trip to this wonderful gem. The house is beautiful-they don't build houses as solidly and sound-proof as they did then. The views of the Mississippi River were amazing, and we spent a lot of time on the porch enjoying the scenery. And the location is wonderful for short trips to nearby attractions (Pike's Peak, Dubuque). Communication with the owner was easy and pleasant, and the the woman that opened the house and greeted us, Carolyn, was very nice. All in all, I highly recommend this lovely home.
We rented the house for the weekend to do a little family bonding with our adult children and grandchildren. We enjoyed being able to use the dock for fishing. The house was very comfortable and equipped with almost everything we needed. We loved the front porch and probably spend more time there than anywhere else. A few of the kids took advantage of the tandem bikes that are available. We had a very pleasant experience with the booking process, the tour of the home when we checked in and the personal tour with the pontoon boat was fun. All in all we all had a great weekend and hope that we will be able to do it again in the future.
Fantastic access to the Mississippi River. a beautiful/challenging golf course, scenic bike and motorcycle riding.
