The Merrick House is a unique, upscale home, architecturally designed to include a portion of the original historic (1840s) brick structure. It is located in scenic Guttenberg, IA, on River Park Drive with direct access to the Mississippi River, city park and river walk. Guttenberg was listed by Forbes Magazine as one of America's 20 prettiest towns. Relax on the 8x20 balcony or lower level porch and watch the barges pass the entry point of the lock & dam or enjoy the large outdoor hot tub. There are plenty of things to do in Guttenberg and the surrounding area for every season. Fly into Guttenberg and land at the island airport, enjoy a round of golf at Guttenberg Golf Club and delight in the breathtaking views, visit the Fresh-water Aquarium, Lock & Dam #10, Eagle Preserve, bike or hike. Within 20-35 minutes in either direction you can visit 2 river boat casinos, Pikes Peak State Park, Effigy Mounds State Park, shopping, antiquing, Amish country, and many wonderful restaurants. You can even enjoy a ferry ride across the Mississippi to Cassville, Wisconsin or Captain (with a check out from Jim) the owner's pontoon boat moored conveniently just across the park on a private floating dock.

Keywords: Wonderful home in historic Guttenberg, Iowa, just 35 minutes from Dubuque, IA or a 3.5 hour, picturesque drive from either Chicago or Minneapolis.

About Michael C. Shriver

I enjoy recreating outdoors and this property is a a great place to start out and return to. I water ski, kayak, swim, and fish the river, or bike, hike, and run nearby parks and trails. The scenery is awesome whether I am on the water, road biking, or hiking in one of the state parks nearby.

Michael C. Shriver purchased this house in 2007

Why Michael C. Shriver chose Iowa

It's fun to just hang around the house if the weather doesn't cooperate or get outside when it does, and return to spacious serenity that invites one to relax and enjoy the comforts of a home with a well equipped kitchen, home theater system, and hot tub.

What makes this house unique

I have tried to allow our clients to have easy access to some of the things I like to do in the area. I've lost count of all the road, mountain, or hybrid bikes (including tandems) I make available free of charge. I also have one large and one smaller pontoon boat available for rent at reasonable prices.

Wonderful experience for the family!!!

  • 5 of 5

Super comfortable house with many amenities. We highly recommend going out on the pontoon boat with Jim. He is an expert guide with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Mississippi and its many denizens. Guttenberg is fantastic getaway from busy urban life.

Owner's Response: Agree, I get nothing but positive feedback when clients engage Jim's services for a river adventure. He is a great guy to hang with and always enjoys the experience as well.

Beautiful area and very peaceful and relaxing. We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

The Merrick House was very nice. The location right on river street was so nice with the front porch and upper balcony overlooking the Mississippi. Mike was very accommodating and responded quickly in getting ready for the trip. Hot tub was nice but might be leaking a little. Wireless internet was very weak and spotty. No tv but did have movies to watch. We did a lot of sight seeing, hiking and some fishing. The river was a little high so the dock and boat were not accessible as the ramp to get on the dock was not long enough to reach the lower sidewalk. The bicycles were excellent. The neighbors were also very friendly. The house is big...just my wife and I went ... but it was very clean and very comfortable. The porch and balcony were our favorite places... so peaceful and relaxing. We went in late June and the weather was ideal - low to high 70's. The sidewalk on the dike overlooking the river was also very nice to go for walks. Would love to go back sometime.

Memorial Day Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This home was wonderful to stay in. Character was very unique as well! House was well-kept and has everything you need including bikes! It was so nice to sit on the porch and overlook the river. It was also nice that it was a quick walk/bike ride to watch barges go through lock & dam #10 and downtown. It is also within distance to Pikes Peak State Park, McGregor, Marquette and Prairie Du Chien. There is a winery as well near by - Promiseland Winery that was phenomenal.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jamie for mentioning the bikes. I counted over 15 on them including 3 tandems that are free to use as well as a few that are more high end that I would rent. It sounds like you found many things to do around Guttenberg besides hangin' on the porch. I so appreciate how nice you left the house and the glowing review. Mike

Great House and Location

  • 5 of 5

Had a girls trip in August of 2016 and just realized I never left a review! The house was great- the pictures do not do it justice! We loved sitting on the porch and of course the hot tob was fantastic! Plenty of sleeping options and the house is very roomy! Great location to town and wonderful views of the river. Great place to stay!

Owner's Response: Don't quite understand why your review is headlined "Disappointed" when you had so many nice things to say about the Merrick House and surrounding area. Thanks for the 5 star review.

Serene Retreat on the Mississippi

  • 5 of 5

This house is perfect for a girls getaway. It has stylish decor, comfortable beds, and a wonderful, well-equipped kitchen. We ate well, slept well, and spent hours talking on the spacious porches that overlook the river. There are fascinating sites for day trips; we loved the Indian Mounds National Park. But you only need to cross the street to enjoy biking or walking by the Mississippi River. I would recommend a stay here to one and all. The owner is wonderful to work with and the property is outstanding.

Owner's Response: It's good to hear your group had such a pleasing experience. I should take more time to enjoy the porches when I'm in Guttenberg. I agree Indian Mounds is a great place to hike, learn about culture, and view the Mississippi.

Great Fall Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is my third stay at the Merrick House in two years and I am already planning on staying next year. My Mother and I met my brother and his wife there for a family get together and all really enjoyed their time in Guttenberg. It is one of the prettiest locals in the Midwest in my opinion and their is plenty to do especially in the fall with the leaves changing. Several nice places to choose from to dine out at. Riding bikes one day was a "new experience" for my mother since it had been over a decade since her last ride. The river was very high this stay so the fishing was poor compared to other times. The Merrick house itself was a novelty for the people in our party who had not seen it before but they all really enjoyed its style and accomadations. Would recommend staying there anytime of the year.

Owner's Response: It's nice to be reminded that someone appreciated the decor of the house itself. It also delights me to know that your mother took advantage of the bikes that are available. Next time you come ride one of the tandems with her if you haven't already. Thanks, Brad
