Architectural Digest Masterpiece 18th Century Tuscan Villa

Bedrooms 4
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Villa, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Le Tanelle is a very special place situated on a high private promontory in beautiful countryside on the edge of the Maremma.

When you first arrive, as you are standing next to the carefully restored large stone farmhouse, the views of San Gimignano, Volterra and the Pisan Alps can take your breath away. Sunlight dances on the infinity pool as the water slips over the edge and you view the patchwork fields, vineyards, hilltop towns, and the wild wooded chestnut and oak forests.

You enter through wrought iron gates into a covered courtyard with a huge brick archway with a private bedroom off of it. The large kitchen, fully equipped, was once a stall for cattle and has the original stone flooring and troughs. Sienese marble countertops and a central table made of old chestnut, complement the rustic character.

The large dining/living area has comfortable seating around a fireplace. Through arched glass doors you step down to the terrace with seating overlooking the pool and the spectacular views.

Next to the terrace is a shady wisteria pergola with a marble topped table for dining “al fresco”, surrounded by flowers and rosemary. Nearby is a large stone BBQ fireplace grille.

Moving on from the sitting area you enter a space originally for wine caskets and grain. Part of this is now a laundry room and a bathroom with shower.

The main entrance with the old bread oven has a majestic stone stairway leading to a large upstairs living room with the original enormous hooded Tuscan kitchen fireplace surrounded by a relaxed seating area. There are two spacious double bedrooms, a bath with marble shower and a large bathroom with an old claw footed bathtub and a separate marble shower. The fourth bedroom has a double, two single beds, and a small bedroom off it with a single bed.

The charming hill towns of Radicondoli and Castelnuovo are 15 to 20 minutes by car. In about an hour’s drive through fascinating countryside you can reach San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena, Massa Marittma and the sandy coast. Florence is about 1½ hours.

Le Tanelle is a magical private space set in pristine countryside. The Italians always describe Tanelle as “tranquillo”. After a hot day in Florence or Siena it is paradise to return here to this oasis where there is always a light breeze.

When you are at Le Tanelle you have total privacy, but not completely isolated as there are other houses less than a half a mile away.

Surrounded by nature, with the woods behind and the fields below there are wildflowers, birds, deer, fox, wild boar and a 10th century castle just a few miles away. Perfect for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding not far away.

Important! This property is rented from Friday to Friday.

About The Owner

I am a Yale University educated Architect and Builder. I fell in love with Tuscany and Siena on my first trip to Europe at the age of nineteen.

When I bought Le Tanelle it was in a ruined state. I spent about twenty years restoring it, doing much of the work myself and with students. It has been one of the most satisfying things I have done in my life. It was published in Architectural Digest February 2006.

When you sit on the terrace in the late afternoon, the warm sunlight raking across the Tuscan countryside you feel you are in paradise. As the twinkling lights of San Gimignano, Volterra and all the little hill towns in between emerge as evening falls, you know that this is the magic hour.

The Owner purchased this villa in 1987

The perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

After a long climb through the winding roads we finally arrived at La Tanelle. Entering in via the poolside we were blown away by the breathtaking views, the rolling tuscan hills seemed endless.

The house itself is stunning, all bedrooms were very spacious and the kitchen was well equipped. We spent most evenings out under the pergola drinking wine and playing cards. We took it easy in the daytime and ventured out to local village hilltop towns. All very beautiful and relaxing.

It is quite remote so you will need to load up on the way with groceries.

Would highly recommend

Beutiful house and location

  • 4 of 5

This is a very charming house, restored with great respect of the history of the house. This means that there are nice bathrooms (not shown in the pictures, btw), a well functioning kitchen and a modern pool, yet the style and atmosphere is like being a couple of centuries back in history.

The house is located in the mountains with a fantastic view. But it is not that easy to get to it (the location is not accurately specified in the rental add -- the GPS coordinates are 43.206814, 10.962262 ). It takes 20-25 minutes to get to the nearest store and and 1 hour and 20 minutes to Siena.

Exquisite in every respect

  • 5 of 5

We invaded La Tanelle with a two week house-party to celebrate my 75th birthday with mixed guest list of family and friends. It could not have been more perfect -- the restoration of the house and its simple elegance, the practicality of the rooms for different pairings, the joy of the country kitchen cooking, thou outdoor grill and pizza over, with many good cooks and inside/outside settings for eclectic, boisterous diners, the panoramic view of landscape and distant hill towns that changes every day and every hour of the day, the pool, the wildlife and walks just outside the door, the markets and villages a simple drive away, and more. It brought out the best in all of us, made us better, deeper conversationalists, funnier, more creative, and more loving of all the good people who came to affirm family and friendship.

Tuscan family reunion

  • 5 of 5

After a long drive from Florence airport we finally settled into the peace and quiet at Le Tanelle. This was an excellent opportunity to spend time with both family and friends for 2 weeks. When not relaxing by the pool with a beer or wine we travelled the surrounding countryside, visiting nearby towns and dining in local restaurants and wineries. We also did a full day tour to Cinque Terra and Pisa (with a separate company) and on other days visited Florence, Lucca, Sienna, Volterra and San Gimignano. Highlights also included a winery tour of Chianti and a cooking school conducted at Le Tanelle. The villa, while rustic, had all necessary comforts except Wi-fi. A problem we had when the pool drained half empty overnight was immediately addressed and we were soon able to swim again. The scenery was spectacular and many great photos were taken. We would highly recommend this villa for its peace, serenity and great views as well as local wildlife

Stunning vistas, well-equipped, very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Stunning vistas of the hills and hilltop villages, remote from other properties, lots of forest to explore, within easy driving distance of towns and Siena, Florence, Volterra, and San Gimignano. A wonderful outdoor space with well-maintained infinity pool, herb garden, and landscape. A spacious interior space with two separate living rooms, a large, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. Everything works! And interesting wildlife: we saw deer, badgers, hares, fireflies, and heard a wild boar and lots of foxes. Suitable for all ages and interests. We had a superb time.

Tuscan Charm at it's best!

  • 5 of 5

My week at Le Tanelle was memorable. Tanelle is a classic Tuscan farmhouse, restored to all its rustic charm with a lot of modern amenities. From the terrace and swimming pool you’re greeted every morning with a stunning view across the Tuscan countryside. On a clear day you can see as far Volterra and San Gimignano. We had al fresco lunches under the pergola, and dinners at wonderful restaurants in the medieval hill towns that dot the landscape – all within a 20-minute drive. I enjoyed the easy access to Siena and dozens of historic hill towns but also appreciated the quiet of Le Tanelle’s hillop aerie after a long day of sight-seeing.
