Overview

About the property

Lakefront estate on a private woodland peninsula, fireplace, sauna, chef kitchen

This secluded magical estate is located on an seven acre woodland and park-like lakefront peninsula. The rustic Tudor house is surrounded by water on three sides, which offers magnificent views from almost every window. With its steeply pitched roof, stone facade, and waterfall pond the house wouldn’t be out of place in the English countryside or Germany’s Black Forest. One reaches the lodge via a long private road through the woods.

This is the perfect place to gather with a group of friends and/or a family get together -- well-behaved dogs are welcome! We can seat large groups for dinner in the dining room or Great Room. Due to the artistic, unique touches guests have said that they felt like they were in a movie set.

GREAT ROOM: Inside you’ll find a cavernous wood-paneled Great Room with floor-to-ceiling windows, a huge working fireplace, a baby grand piano, a victrola, built-in library filled with books, comfy faux-fur draped couches, and an enormous wrought iron chandelier. It's the perfect place to watch movies (large flatscreen TV/DVD), play board games or read by the fire. The owner is a children's book author/illustrator and her books are available for reading out loud while looking at the dollhouse sets which illustrate them. There are some taxidermy animals in the Great Room. Rather than take them down the homeowner has given them crystal tears because she is an animal lover.

DINING ROOM: The stately wood-paneled dining room features a gas fireplace, giant wooden tables, a built-in wine wooden wine rack and oil paintings. The dining room is adjacent to a glass and wood conservatory filled with cozy seating, trees, plants, an upright piano, another dining table, a working fountain and tree trunk columns.

KITCHEN: The kitchen is a chef's paradise. It features a Viking professional gas stove with griddle, a Sub Zero two door refrigerator, a interior barbecue grill and plenty of counter space with stools. The kitchen is well appointed with every type of plate, bowl, wine glass, cup, platter, coffee, utensil and cooking tool imaginable. A professional juicer is available upon request for those who know how to use it. The spice cabinet is filled with all types of exotic and traditional spices. Off the kitchen is a laundry room with a washer and dryer.

5 BEDROOMS: The Clocktower Bedroom has incredible lake views from french doors, a king-sized bed, a queen-sized round bed, two clock tower windows, his/her full bathrooms, a massive sunken tub, a steam sauna shower, a flat screen television (cable) and access to a stone patio. The Blue Bedroom has a king-sized bed, a twin bed, a small flat screen television (with DVD player/cable), a full bathroom, and views. The Spring Flowers Bedroom has a queen-sized bed and lake views. The bathroom with a cedar steam shower is across the hall. The Ship Captain Room (upstairs) has two twin beds, a queen bed, two twin cots, a small stairway library and lake views. The Cinderella Chef Bedroom is off the kitchen. It features a twin bed. There is a full bathroom right next to it.

GROUNDS: Outside you’ll find a secluded lake with a private floating dock, a large stone patio with cafe lights, manicured grounds, three decks, rolling hills, a koi pond, a babbling brook, a butterfly garden, a child's playhouse, hammocks, a swing and huge pines circling the home. You can dine al fresco on the giant double length picnic table on an octagonal deck. Other activities: Boating/swimming/fishing/ice skating on the pristine lake, napping in the hammocks, playing house in the child's cottage, swinging, sunbathing on the patio and roasting marshmallows in one of the five fire pits.

MISC: Pet homing doves fly free on the grounds. The owner also has a potbellied pig named Nini who grazes outside in the backyard pen. Nini is an actress and is quite friendly. There is a separate apt on the property which is occupied by our animal sitter. She feeds Nini, the homing pigeons and koi fish while we are away. There is also a caretaker, Joe, on call. He will make sure the driveway is plowed and will shovel paths, if necessary. Firewood and a wheelbarrow is available outside for your use. This isn't a bed and breakfast. We want to give you complete privacy and autonomy. The homeowner is available 24/7 via text during stays in order to assist with any questions or concerns.

SIZE: Square footage: 5,000 interior, 7.5 acres of land (Main house: Great room, dining room, sun room, commercial kitchen, 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, cedar sauna room, steam shower, laundry room, heated towel rack; Outbuildings: Boathouse, folly tower, Hansel & Gretel child’s house).

DISTANCE: Only a one hour drive to Manhattan.

PETS: Well behaved dogs and friendly potbellied pigs are considered for $100 per visit. We have a large dog run, a pig barn/pen, and a chicken coop. Other animals are considered on a case by case basis.

SLEEPS 16 (OR MORE): The house can sleep 16 in beds: 2 king beds, 2 queen beds, 1 full bed, 4 twin beds, 2 cot beds. Our rates are for 6 people in Fall/Winter/Spring and 13 guests in the Summer and on selected holidays. $50 per person per night is added to the fee for each additional person. A $100 flat fee is added to the quote for each dog. We do allow camping and air mattresses as long as the extra per person fees are paid. We have one full-sized mattress in the linen closet. We suggest that guests to bring pack and plays for infants.

About Cynthia

Artist, children's book author, playwright living in NYC. My children's book dollhouse sets are on display in the house. http://www.butwhowillbellthecats.com and http://cynthiavonbuhler.com

Cynthia purchased this estate in 2007

Why Cynthia chose Stratford

This property is a private waterfront oasis located only 1 hour from Manhattan. In the summer swim in the lake, dry off in the hammock and relax in the cedar sauna. In the fall boating is still possible and the leaves are bright and colorful. In the winter read a book by the huge fireplace, cook in the professional kitchen and dine in the wine-colored dining room. This is truly a special place to hold family get together for the holidays or to escape for a romantic weekend vacation. Need a place to write your next novel or paint your masterpiece, look no further. The views from every window are incredible. I have had yearly family reunions here ever since I bought the home. It is a treasured event that my family looks forward to every year.

What makes this estate unique

It's extremely rare to find a private, 7 acre lakefront estate only 15 minutes from public ocean beaches, 1 hour from Manhattan, 20 minutes from New Haven and 1 hour from Hartford. You have all of the benefits of complete privacy and relaxation with fine dining, theater and nightlife close by.

Notes:
Caretaker: A caretaker is available for any household problems you might have if the owner isn't available. The owner reserves an attached art studio with a separate entrance for their pig sitter. The owner's potbellied pig sleeps in the caretaker apartment and in an outdoor pen on the grounds. We can recommend caterers. Events for groups larger than 16 are available for an additional fee. Please ask the owner for a quote. We need to know the number of guest and all details. The house and grounds are perfect for parties and corporate meetings.

Such a unique spot!

  • 4 of 5

We loved being in this house to celebrate my brother's 45th with family. The house was totally offbeat and fun to explore. A perfect place for a murder mystery game or a cocktail party. We just enjoyed sinking into the couches and loving the giant, beautiful fireplace room. My kids (6 and 10) loved swinging on the hoop and the silks that hang from the ceiling in the great room. They actually have taken circus classes so this was a serious bonus surprise. We loved being out by the lake and did some fishing by the bonfire on the dock. My brother even caught a large mouthed bass that we cooked up for dinner win the cool kitchen. Beds were comfy. The place could've used a bit of touch up cleaning but we didn't mind. Highly recommend if you'r looking for something a little quirky, different and special. Thanks so much Cynthia!

Beautiful and intriguing home.....

  • 4 of 5

The description of the home as a Rustic Tudor manor house with a large property with lake are accurate...in addition, it is most interesting and unique. All in all our family enjoyed checking out the details of the house and spending time on the dock on the lake and using the fire pit at night. The kitchen has a nice lay out for food prep and hanging out. Our adult son and niece enjoyed the sauna. The house is almost like being in a museum with all the special touches that the owner has created. We delighted in looking at the children’s books she has authored and the amazing intricate creative work and handmade sets and cut out hand painted figures. It is certainly a one of a kind house! That being said, the taxidermy animals with crystal tears were a surprise, and also the curious hall of mirrors. A few other touches were also a bit unusual. When we goggled the owner's name, we found photos and info on her "surreal, immersive theater that has esoteric ritual ceremonies featuring eclectic music, devilish dance and daring performers”, which explained some of what we had seen. In hindsight, I’m glad we had a chance to get a glimpse into this artist’s world. The house is certainly an amazing conversation piece!

Unique Home to Celebrate ANY occassion!

  • 5 of 5

What a truly amazing time we had at this unique house as I celebrated my 50th! You really need to take your time and walk around and enjoy all of the unique finds that are hidden throughout this house...lots of surprises! We had an "adult" weekend right after a snowfall so we did not get to enjoy any of the outdoor amenities unfortunately but that didn't matter! Our guests included musicians who used the pianos (there are two) and we brought along our own accoustic instruments so we forgot all about the outdoors! :) The house is stocked nicely with all of the items you would need to cook & bake as well as towels, etc... We loved the Master Bedroom with a view of the lake....it was very peaceful way to wake up and enjoy the sunrise. Plenty of space to spread out when needed and the dining areas provided an area to be more cozy. Cynthia is SUPER responsive and helpful to ensure a wonderful getaway! Hope to return in a warmer time of the year to enjoy the outdoors! THANK YOU!

Incredible, creep-tastic weekend of mystery

  • 5 of 5

I and eight of my very closest friends had the unrivaled pleasure of staying in Cynthia's one-of-kind Connecticut estate last weekend. You would have had to legally evict us and/or pry us out with large crowbars (we loved it that much), but Cynthia was so nice and responsive that we wouldn't have wanted to make her life more difficult. Have you ever wanted to star in your own murder mystery, minus the murder? Cynthia's house is the perfect place for you to live out your real-life game of Clue dreams. Set on a beautiful lake, complete with paddle boats, each room of this house is more fantastic than the last. The entire weekend felt like one big treasure hunt, and the constant refrain was, "Oh my god. Come check out this _______," as we discovered mind-bending surprises at every turn. I thoroughly recommend a stay at this house for anyone who is a boring person - simply spending time here will make you interesting by default.
