About Oak Flat Manager -Misty Betschart 805-423-0157

Oak Flat Retreat was originally purchased by an artist pair whose primary residence is in Southern California. We were looking for a beautiful country place, where we could paint outside year round. After looking in a variety of places for several years, we came to visit friends in Paso Robles and fell in love with the area. The moment we saw this property we knew that this was our perfect retreat.

In 2000 our plans for a simple remodel of the existing home grew from opening a wall here and a window there, to a complete remodel including porches on all sides, new windows and doors, new beamed ceiling, new roof, fireplace, complete kitchen and master bath remodel, wood floors as well as new A/C and soft water systems. Not to mention the exterior stone, paving and drip systems. We never intended on building a larger house, planting grapes or raising farm animals because we wanted to come to Paso to relax and enjoy family and friends.

As the wines of this area are being discovered and grow in popularity the influx of new restaurants, tasting rooms, organic foods and artistic people continue to change the demographics of Paso Robles. We continue to be amazed at the speed at which our community is growing, but are thankful to be surrounded by large ranches and farms that for at least our lifetimes will help to preserve the country way of life.

Being in Paso is not only a feast for the eyes and taste buds, but the joy and simplicity of gracious country living is food for the soul!

Maybe 4 1/2 Stars

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Oak Flat for four nights and loved it. It's beautiful, there are many species of birds visible from the front porch, we saw deer, we heard owls, coyotes and wild turkeys, the walks are great and the house is terrific. What a view! The nights are totally dark, so lots of stars. And with the exception noted below, it was very quiet. No cars, no horns, no hubbub. We rented both the house and the studio. There was plenty of everything a person could need in the kitchen and bathrooms. The manager (Misty) was quite available, but did not intrude. The house is decorated with wonderful paintings. All in all, we had an excellent time.

There were a couple of issues: first the bed in the studio is not very comfortable (I am told - I slept in the master, which was fine). I think it's two beds shoved together. Certainly not a deal breaker. Second, on our last evening there, some hunters started shooting nearby. We felt they were too close and Misty was concerned because they should not have been there at all. It made us nervous, but only lasted about an hour and caused no real problem, except noise. My guess is that will be addressed.

Owner's Response: We are committed to the pristine condition of Oak Fat Retreat as a refuge for all human beings and all animals. This spectacular 42 acres of rolling property offers an unparalleled opportunity to reconnect with nature in a meditative pause from day to day living. We are known for quiet without intrusion from the outside world. A single incident nearby, is certainly cause for concern as it is previously unheard of at Oak Flat Retreat. So, in response, we immediately reached out to our neighbors regarding hunting groups, friends regarding any trespass and encouraged neighboring owners to keep gates closed with adequate signage. We have added more signage around our boundary to warn outsiders of our commitment to pursue maximum legal prosecution without exception for trespassing. We also installed a game camera surveillance system to record any activity in that regard. We are confident that we have deployed a "watchful eye" buffer zone by engaging owners of surrounding ranch property in a collective . Together, we will effectively monitor and prevent noise disturbance in the future. We love our resident turkeys, mule deer, jack rabbits, coyotes and especially our wonderful guests! Thank you for your review and allowing us to continue to preserve and protect the peaceful relaxation of our guests at Oak Flat Retreat".

Great, great, great place!

  • 5 of 5

I came up this weekend with 3 other girls for a little girls weekend and we had a blast!! Of course Paso is always fun, but I think where you stay makes it that much ore enjoyable. I typically stay in hotels in the downtown area and had decided to look on VRBO which is always fun. The retreat is just that, tucked up on it's on little peak with amazing views, and it's so peaceful and quiet! We were greeted by Tina, she had a bottle of wine waiting for us. The beds were SO comfortable. We were able to cook great meals both nights and even sat out on the paved driveway with our wine and gazed at the stars! There a great little patio area to eat breakfast and dinner on....I can go on and on. We are all ready to come back for our next visit to Paso. I would HIGHLY recommend staying here if you want to jet off for some peace and quiet, and enjoy some Paso wines.

An amazing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I met another couple (our friends) and spent 3 nights at Oak Flat retreat. The place was perfect and check-in/coordination could not ahve been easier. Fresh flowers in every room was a very nice touch. Each bedroom (and every room in the house for that matter) has amazing views of the valley. The beds...well, I can't remmeber the last time I slept so well. They were increadibly comfortable. We cooked breakfast every morning and the kitchecn was well stocked. The table in the nook area was really comfortable and offered a great vantage point to bird (turkey) watch in the morning. The location is very convenient, an easy drive to town and just a couple minutes from several wineries. There is nothing about our stay that we would have changed or flet like we missed. Thank you for opening up your home to us and making it a truly memorable stay. We will try to make it back up soon for another visit.

Comfort Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our daughter and son-in-law arrived with much anticipation! We were welcomed by the comforts of a home away from home. Freshly arranged flowers greeted us in each room. As did the bottle of wine in the kitchen....awaiting our arrival. The fireplace was a treat in the early mornings. Both our beds were divine and the throw blankets were put to good use. We will truly miss the wild turkeys and the deer along the roadway. The views from the house are breathtaking. We even went to the recommended local farmers market and bbq on the porch one evening. What else can I say? We long to return, maybe in the fall.

From the moment we arrived we were in heaven. The location could not have been more perfect as the home is out in the middle of beautiful countryside and just a short trip to the charming town square. The views were stunning as was the gorgeous artwork throughout the lovely and immaculately kept home. The owner could not have been more accommodating and gracious. All the restaurants she recommended were fabulous as well as the wonderful farmers market. We cannot wait to come back!!
