Mike Seely is a semi-retired financial consultant and money manager. He was chairman of HSBC's US mutual funds and recently published TURNING POINT, a book about the challenges facing our millennial childrenl. He and his wife, Meg Mithoefer, also live in Dorset, VT and Stuart, Florida.

Why mike seely chose Anse La Raye Quarter

Visited St Lucia in 1976 and fell in love with it.

What makes this villa unique

The space

Brigand Hill has a main building with 3 bedrooms ( two queens and 1 twin set) as well as 3 full bathrooms--all with skylights-- a living room, outdoor dining room, two outdoor showers, a full wrap around deck overlooking the canopy and rainforest to the East, and the Caribbean Sea to the West. We have a separate " cabana" just off the pool that includes two more bedrooms ( one queen, one twin set) and another full bathroom with his and her sinks.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire home and all its amenities. Brigand Hill is the only villa in a 500-acre former banana plantation that includes a private beach with utmost privacy. Easy access either by walking down the driveway or drive down with all of your necessary items for the perfect beach day-- i.e. cooler, drinks, food. Snorkeling is great just off the beach to the right, so make sure to enjoy our complimentary snorkel gear. Just ask our caretaker George.

Interaction with guests

Owner of the villa lives in the US most of the year, but is always available by phone or by email should the need arise. We have a full time caretaker who lives below the home in his own space who can help with absolutely any issues at all. George is a great guy and a jack of all trades, so don't hesitate to pick his brain regarding history of the island, things to do, where to go. He can also help plan daily excursions and act as your tour guide and show you around the island. He's about as great as they come.

Other things to note

Brigand Hill maintains a full time staff that includes a cook ( Bertilla), maid ( Vera) as well as our caretaker, George. Guests say Bertilla's cooking rivals that of the major restaurants on the island and we highly recommend planning several meals w/ her. Vera will make sure your bed is made every morning and clothes are washed and folded. You don't have to raise a finger; let them pamper you!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This Villa is incredible! Sleeping in the Master Suite is like sleeping in a tree house with the sounds of the jungle all around you. We loved the secludedness of the property and the lovely beach down the hill, and couldn't imagine staying anywhere else.

The staff was so friendly and totally pampered us. Bertilla's cooking is off-the-hook, and the two times we had Christie's was delicious as well. They were both great at accommodating Colette's gluten allergy. We went to Michelle Elliot's Pink Plantation for dinner, and while we enjoyed the atmosphere and the food, it was nowhere near as good as Bertilla's and Christie's. Vera is such a sweet lady and was happy to hang dry some of Colette's clothes. And George, well he is just plain the best! He made us feel like family, showed us the Island, took us snorkeling at Ti Kaye and the Jalousie Plantation, and provided us with tons of fresh fruit from the estate. He also made us some local treats and cocoa tea. You are so lucky to have the staff that you do, and we can't rave enough about them.

We hope to be able to visit again someday, as this was our favorite vacation ever!

Room Tip: There is a Master Suite upstairs in the main house, two bedrooms with two baths on the ground floor...

The perfect holiday home, with the best staff, on a beautiful island.

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had the privilege of staying at Brigand Hill on the transcendent island of St. Lucia.

The House:

Exactly what we needed to relax and unwind. The house is set beautifully in the luscious hills of Anse La Raye, you cannot see any other properties, just beautiful greenery and the sea in the (not to far) distance. The main part of the house has a fully functioning kitchen, breakfast bar and comfortable seating leading out onto where we spent the majority of our time at the property: the large wooden dining table, pool, and sun loungers! All of the bedrooms are of equal size and each come with their own bathroom (apart from the 2 by the pool which share one), perfect for friends who like their own prep space! The master bedroom (which I had the pleasure of staying in) has beautifully high ceilings, wrap-around windows and a 4-poster bed. Due to the setting of the house, there is often a gentle breeze which keeps the temperature wonderfully refreshing.

The Staff:

As wonderful as Brigand Hill is, it would be nothing without the EXCEPTIONAL staff, who looked after us, like we were members of their family.

Miss Vera came in the mornings to clean the rooms, bathrooms and kitchen AND do our laundry (never have I returned home with nothing to put in the washing machine) all to the highest quality; it felt as though we were living in a hotel!

Bertillia is the heavenly chef that we have all struggled to live without since our return home! We had asked for local foods to be prepared, and were not disappointed at any point. Bertillia came in hours before to lovingly prepare and cook our meal and we spent but a few minutes to devour it all! We would highly recommend the St. Christophine dish, the curry goat, the breadfruit balls, and the St. Lucian national dish of salt fish and green bananas. Just typing that has given me hunger pains!

Last, but certainly not least, is George – the only person you need to make sure you have the best time on the island. We didn’t really have any plans when we arrived, but George sat with us and helped us to work out an amazingly well-paced itinerary for the week. He fixed EVERYTHING for us – anything we wanted, George went out of his way to help). I am truly indebted to George for his exceptional care of me and my friends, we feel like the luckiest people to have visited St. Lucia because of him!

Enjoy! :)

Simplistic Luxury & Serenity

  • 5 of 5

Brigand Hill is a wonderful place to stay on this spectacular island. Centrally located on the west coast, the villa provides easy access to a variety of activities all over the island for half or full day trips. It's simple beauty & structure, & impeccably maintained grounds reflect the island itself. It's just enough without being too much. For those who really want to feel immersed in the St. Lucian terrain/climate, it's the perfect place to make your home base. Sitting on a hill above the Anse Galet valley, the villa has surreal views of the rugged topography while providing a glimpse of the Caribbean Sea to its west. The bedroom upstairs in the main building has screened shutters, allowing the constant tradewinds to create a cool & airy environment while you sleep at night or nap during the day. When there's a rainstorm, you can hear it approaching as it comes down the valley & descends upon the house. If you're lucky enough to be sleeping when this happens, this room couldn't be a better place to be. At night, you'll hear the sounds of the rainforest take over, & it's like falling asleep on a perfect summer night. Add a bag of ice to the grocery list so you don't run out using the blender :)

George, the caretaker, is extremely knowledgeable on anything/everything St. Lucia-related. Happy to answer all your questions to guide you in the right direction when making plans, he'll even accompany you on an excursion! He came with us on our Gros Piton hike & barely even broke a sweat! A jack of all trades, he's eager to share his passion for the island. Vera is a love & happily and graciously keeps the house in order during your stay so you don't have to. I'm pretty particular about other people doing my laundry, but she took scrupulous care of my clothes. She even had flowers on the bedspread upstairs upon our arrival - so romantic. Bertilla is a super sweet, talented cook & prepared some really great meals for us. She'll make you anything but I suggest you request some local dishes like christophene casserole, chicken curry, rice & beans, or pumpkin soup - all delish! She set a lovely table every night outside by the pool, specially folded napkins included. This crew left no detail unnoticed and their hard work revealed itself in my experience at the villa. They added elements of ease and welcoming grace to the trip which made the island as a whole even more special. I can't wait to go back to St. Lucia, and I'll definitely be staying at Brigand Hill.
