THE REAL DEAL
The historic Open Cross Ranch is an authentic, working cattle ranch in the Canelo Hills near Sonoita. Enjoy the most stunning views and excellent accommodations. The Ranch was first homesteaded in 1918. Most recently the original house and two private guest houses have been updated and renovated by owners - husband and wife, Mac & Billie Donaldson. They reside in the main house, and the Homestead and Canelo Houses are available to travelers. With unrivaled panoramic views and spacious areas, the western setting also provides a rich backdrop for events, including weddings and receptions.
HOME SWEET HOME
Each house is tastefully appointed with details that make a house a home, such as linens, cookware, dinnerware and more. Each quality item has been personally chosen by Billie Donaldson. Other luxuries include a modern laundry room in each house, and beautifully appointed kitchens. Your comfort and privacy are important at the Ranch. Once you arrive, it becomes your private home to come and go as you please; a 100% self-serve stay. Billie’s complimentary welcome basket will be waiting for you. She might include fresh eggs from her hen house, seasonal goodies, or other local offerings.
HORSES WELCOME AT OPEN CROSS RANCH
If you want to vacation with your horse(s), call for details. Private rides are sometimes available with the owner, schedule permitting; a great way to see the working side of the Ranch.
A GREAT ESCAPE
The Open Cross motto is, “unplug and unwind”. Be prepared to leave city life behind. This countryside property provides private nature walks, hikes, horseback riding, and mountain biking right outside your door. The dark nighttime skies are a stargazer’s paradise, and the landscape is pure inspiration for artists and photographers. Riding stables are just a stone’s throw, and a mere 4 1/2 miles off of Hwy 83, you’ll find yourself in the heart of some of Arizona’s best wine country. The immediate area offers wine tastings and tours at a dozen vineyards and wineries, many of which are recipients of some of the most prestigious wine awards and accolades. “Foodies” might also appreciate local organic produce, Farmers’ Markets, and plentiful homemade goods. A quick jaunt to nearby Sonoita and other towns, reveals a wonderful selection of restaurants, shopping, historic attractions, museums and other recreation. Throughout the year escape to events such as the Sonoita Rodeo, horse races, food events, county fairs and other community activities. Fishing and water sport enthusiasts enjoy nearby lakes - Parker Canyon and Patagonia.
FOR NATURE LOVERS
This Madera oak woodland receives the majority of rainfall from July through September, bringing rolling green pastures and abundant wildlife activity. Every changing season is celebrated here. The higher elevation of 5,100 ft. makes for cooler, greener summers than many of the surrounding cities and towns, while fall and winter are comparatively mild, with a short-lived snowfall now and then. Each season brings unique sights of native fauna and colorful landscapes specific to these wooded grasslands.
BEHIND THE SCENES.
Open Cross Ranch is a USDA Forest permit in the Canelo Hills of Santa Cruz County. This year-round cow and calf operation has crossbred cows with Angus and Hereford bulls. Calves are born from April–July and are weaned in the fall. Because of the difficult terrain of these limestone hills, working cattle by traditional horseback is necessary. Owner Mac Donaldson oversees the day to day operations that keep this part of the Ranch's history alive and kick'n. It is a beautiful family affair.

Away from it all... and yet everything you could ask for.
Stayed here for 3 nights while wine-tasting in the Sonoita and Elgin area of AZ. WONDERFUL experience! March 1-4 2018.
Make no mistake, this ranch is remote. There are only a few decent restaurants in the area (Go to The Cafe for the best meals in town). If you plan to get here late on your first night, you'd better bring something to cook for dinner that night. Kitchen is FULLY stocked and ready for you - you just supply the food.
Billie has done a remarkable job in decorating these cabins, and supplying you with everything you might need during your stay - and it's all top-notch first-class amenities. From the monogrammed towels, to the private label soap, to the pre-cut wood for fires inside and out, to the furniture and comfy beds. This place is remote, but it is not lacking in what you would want in a get-away cabin. Remarkable taste in decorating!
Within 30 minutes of this ranch, you'll find easy access to more than 16 wine tasting rooms and microbreweries. Most are open from 11am til 4pm... but some open at 10am and others close at 5pm.
We will come back.
It's so relaxing and quiet. The rolling hills of trees and tall grasses make you feel like you're in Montana... and the deer running around the area are spectacular.
Peace and quiet, lovely owners
House has everything needed. Heating works well. Beds very comfortable. Good laundry system. Hosts we're helpful in giving an understanding of the area's history.
Perfect small group retreat stay
Open Cross Ranch was a perfect match for our group of 8. It is private, off grid for unplugging, ample spaces for connecting with Mother Nature, clean, simple, inviting, cozy and full of beautiful energy. Our group will be back.
A perfect week at Open Cross Ranch
Thanks, Billie and Mac, for a wonderful time. Your home is both beautiful and comfortable and we appreciated your attention to detail. We enjoyed lots of great hiking and birding in the area. We look forward to a return visit!
Wonderful place, wonderful hosts!!
Open Cross Ranch is a fabulous place to get away from it all. The house is beautifully appointed and fully stocked, and there's a grill and firepit ready to go. The views are incredible. Billie and Mac are superb hosts. This is my second time staying there (once in Canelo House with my husband and this time in Homestead House with a group of friends) and I can't wait to go back.
Beautiful house and property. So peaceful.
