Conveniently located, charming and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was perfectly located, close to great dining and the Blue Ridge/Skyline Dr. The owner went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and was beyond accommodating during our stay! I highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for some fun and relaxation in a beautiful peaceful setting. Our dog Brutus who doesn't always get to enjoy vacations with us had a wonderful time running around the property.

Calm and Peaceful Rustic cottage !

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed our Easter weekend visit to this rustic cottage.

The cottage was well stocked with all the basics, and my daughter especially enjoyed the air hockey, and ping pong table in the basement. The location was very convenient to travel to all the local attractions, with easy access to I-81, yet the house itself is situated away from the roadway, on a private lane, and is very private and peaceful. Two levels of decks, and front and rear decks, made it easy to pick a relaxing spot in or out of the sunshine, or in a calm breeze. Phyliss was very hospitable, and checked to be sure we arrived OK, and had no questions. A nice country cottage, and all in all, a great choice to stay !

Rented for 4 nights-left after the first night!

  • 1 of 5

We rented the cabin for 4 nights. It was raining when we arrived, the gravel road was washed out, the windows were OPEN, TV on, and a bag of personal belongings inside. Upon texting the owner, she told us she left the windows open for fresh air (that should have been a clue) and the TV on, since the last renters had trouble with it. Also that she would pick up the personal belongings in a couple of days.

We noticed a strong musty smell as we entered through the lower level, but that was a basement, so we did not think much of it. Living level was a comfortable layout so we settled in. We noticed the smell creeping upon us, so we turned on the ac units (there was no central air) , on fan setting, to bring in fresh air, they were FILTHY and did not help. We also noticed that the living room sofa and chairs all smelled bad, like wet pets. We attempted to get fresh air into the upstairs bedrooms. Even with windows open and fans on, we could smell and taste that musty mildew odor all night. It was awful, woke to headache and sore throat. (the upstairs beds were poor quality, not level, and sheets clean but had stains). We ate our breakfast cereal out on the deck the next morning, standing up, since all was wet; just to breathe some fresh air.

We agonized about staying or leaving but decided for health reasons to abandon this cabin. After decision was made, it was a HUGE relief even though we had already paid for the stay. No dollars are worth our lungs' health. We had been told to place our trash in the out building and in doing that, noticed that there was a mountain of trash bags in that building! Yuck.

We had to drive away with the car windows open, to air the smell out of our luggage and belongings. We have stayed at many homes and condos and this was the only one that was unsafe air quality. This place should NOT BE RENTED or lived in until the air quality is remedied. Although we do not suffer from either, anyone with asthma or allergies BEWARE! We have owned multiple properties and are familiar with maintenance procedures and this cabin does not have the maintenance it needs.

The owners response was that she wished we had called, "the heat pump would have cleared the air." I am sure it would NOT have remedied the mildew/musty situation or the smelly furniture.

Owner's Response: I have resolved issues described above with the installation of a dehumidifier. It works great to remove extra moisture from my basement. The lower level of my home was completely remodeled 7 months ago. It is a great second gathering space inside my home. When needed, the area also has its own source of heat. I am more than happy to work out a partial refund when, rarely, guests are uncomfortable with my home. I rented my space150 nights in the past year to over 40 different families. Not one asked for a refund! Come for visit! Phyllis Cave, owner

Great location and very peaceful area

  • 5 of 5

Our family met for a short vacation. Property was a good fit for us. Some toured Monticello, some golfed and some hiked in the Blue Ridge trails. The house was clean and had plenty of sleeping areas. Close to Stauton which had some very good restaurants that we dined at. The property is not right on the main road. It was a good thing I had a GPS or you would drive by the driveway. I would recommend this property for your stay.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful, peaceful home located in beautiful Shenandoah Valley. We are a family of four and one dog and we had plenty of room to spread out. We especially enjoyed the deck in the mornings and evenings. We felt very much at home here. The location of this house was superb. Shenandoah National Park and The Blue Ridge Parkway were about twenty minutes away, where we enjoyed beautiful scenery and excellent hiking. The house is a little over a half hour away from Charlottesville. We highly recommend visiting Monticello. Phyllis, the owner, was a joy to work with. We will definitely return!

Owner's Response: I enjoy providing a peaceful retreat. I have upgraded the property in numerous ways without making it "stuffy". It is still a relaxed, laid-back house/cabin in the woods with many amenities including comfy beds and upgraded linens. I take pride in ironing my pillow cases for each new set of guests. I have installed a new tub 19" deep on the inside. My lower level is mold-free, recently refurbished. I even share several sets of nice dishes including bone china cups for tea. My grand piano will be tuned this month. I have raised my prices but not a lot. It is important to me that my visitors feel they receive an excellent value. Please come and experience for yourself!
