About the property

4 bedrooms, loft, 2 futons, 2 baths, sleeps 10

Want to stay in a tree house on the beach? This unique house is located directly on the beach on the quiet east end of this family friendly island, perfect for beach combing, walking, or just sitting on the deck enjoying the idyllic setting with incredible views and the calming effect of the tranquil ocean waters. Ocean Isle is situated on a protected stretch of the Atlantic coastline with a directly south-facing beach which keeps the ocean calm and the sun shining over the ocean from dawn to dusk. The house features an open design with a huge master bedroom, another large bedroom and a loft upstairs with balconies overlooking the two-story living room with two walls of top-to-bottom windows for incredible views of the ocean and Shallotte inlet.

About the treehouse: There are no large trees on Ocean Isle Beach so we trucked in 20 40-foot telephone poles, sunk them deep into the sand 10 feet apart, and built our tree house around them using pole frame construction. The poles are mostly exposed and obvious both inside and outside the house and give it a completely unique character. There are wooden floors throughout, except in the master bedroom which is carpeted. The spiral staircases are much larger than most factory-built ones and were designed and built from scratch by the Roberts family and the house itself was built by the Roberts family with their own hands and everybody pitching in. Every bedroom has access to a porch and there are both upstairs and downstairs decks on the ocean side of the house. We love spending time in this treehouse on the beach and we think you will, too.

About Mike Roberts

This house is owned by three brothers; Michael, Gordon, and Rob Roberts.

Mike Roberts purchased this house in 1979

Why Mike Roberts chose Southern Coast

We three brothers built this house in 1979 with our Dad, Robert J. Roberts of Charlotte, NC, who has since passed. The house's unique design features extreme wind resistance to survive the hurricanes and other severe storms that often batter the coast. It has two stories of windows facing Southeast for brilliant views and passive solar heating in winter.

What makes this house unique

There is no other house exactly like this, and no better place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Southeastern North Carolina coast. If you are looking for luxury and electronic entertainment, look elsewhere. This house is all about the sun, the beach, and the water.

Perfect for the young at heart with a view

  • 5 of 5

The house was very special place that I will rent again. The views are amazing from every place in the house. The porches that are everywhere overlook the whole island. You don't need to even lay on the beach to enjoy the sounds and sights of the ocean. From the top porch you feel as if your on top of your own island. The main porch has perfect sight lines to beach combers, the surf, and the wide open ocean. The house is just one piece of what this listing provides. The owners are some of nicest and cool laid back people I have met. I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with them. The house is being updated and repaired from some of the storms that ravaged the island that speaks volumes to character of the owners and the unique nature of the house in my opinion. This house is a one of kind. My stay there will stay close to my heart and remind me of how much we all need to step back from our fast pace lives. So we can allow ourselves to soak in the beauty of nature. YOU GUYS ROCK BABY!! Thank you very much and will be seeing again soon cheers- Erin

a lot of beach once the tide goes down

Property is older but improvemts are being made. Can't beat the seclusion being towards the east end of the isle. We would come back to vacation!

September getaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the pole house. The view from the deck was incredible. We could sit and watch the dolphins and pelicans for hours. It is exactly what we were looking for. Very relaxing.

Needs TLC

  • 2 of 5

I have to say we really enjoyed the town of Ocean Isle! The beach is beautiful and not crowded at this time of year.

As for the house... Yes, gorgeous views, the convenience of walking just 5-10 steps to the beach, and the fun factor of a unique "treehouse" that was custom designed/built by the family.

Unfortunately, that's all :(

The negative review below was, sadly, right on. I thought we weren't too picky and would make it work as a fun family "adventure," but it really is bad. Rustic is OK. But the house is in dire need of a handyman, an exterminator, and more importantly, a good thorough CLEANING. There is a musty nursing-home-like smell in the air and it is evident that it isn't being cleaned well. We were with 2 kids and had a hard time fully relaxing because we didn't want them to touch anything!

It does have a lot of potential with some TLC. This may be a good choice for a group of college kids, or maybe a bachelor/man trip. But not recommended for a family, especially with small kids, unless you want to spend the first part of your vacation cleaning stuff (I do enough of that at home already).

For anyone who does rent in the future, a helpful tip would be to bring your own towels, pillows, linens, toiletries, paper towels and toilet paper. And don't forget the Clorox wipes.

Fun Place

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the treehouse. We spent a 2nd week at a more conventional beachhouse and found that we missed the treehouse. Yes its rustic. If you need high-end finishes then not for you. Good size, well-stocked, great location on the beach. Lots of character. Love the Kitchen looking out at the ocean. Only complaint would be the upper level bedrooms have no sound barrier from area below. Hard to be quiet when folks are still sleeping upstairs.
