We would love to welcome you to our slice of heaven -- a 10,000 square foot, 10 bedroom "Big Chill" house overlooking the beautiful Niagara River. It has gardens galore, river access, a tennis court and a large heated swimming pool, all on 7 acres and over 350 feet of riverfront on the lower Niagara River in Western New York. Formerly a day's carriage ride from Buffalo (now 30 minutes by car), the house was built in 1916 by one of our ancestors as a summer retreat. It has been updated over the years (including central air-conditioning throughout) but retains all the charm of an old country estate. There's lots to do in the area, including amazing Niagara Falls, but the property itself is a peaceful and rejuvenating place to spend time -- perfect for reunions with family and friends.

Our family loved this home!!!
We celebrated Mom's 90th birthday in Kathy and Duncan's lovely home. It was elegant, yet comfortable; full of love and history. There was enough space for our large family to eat together, cook together, laugh together, and find a quiet place to read. The kitchen was large and well appointed with every tool, utensil, pan and platter needed. The knives were even reasonably sharp! The gardens were beautiful with five comfortable, charming porches where we could sit and enjoy the view. The swimming pool was a highlight for all four generations. It was well maintained, with plenty of chairs, floats, toys and even beach towels! The Smith family was attentive, responsive and generous with their time, yet not intrusive. Our family, to a person, couldn't have been more pleased.
Absolutely Fabulous Home on the Niagara River!!
We have been renting VRBO homes for over 10 years for a group of 12 and this was byfar the best home yet!!
Beautiful home that was well appointed, lush gardens & numerous patios, pool, tennis court, the kitchen had everything we needed to cook gourmet meals each night for 12 and our hosts were so very helpful with all our questions about the house, the surrounding area sights and history of the home.
The home is located right on the Niagara River in a quiet neighborhood, yet close to the falls, Canada, wineries, and much more. We would HIGHLY recommend this home to anyone!!
Spectacular Elegant Practical for large families
An outstanding home on the mighty Niagara River that is perfect for larger families. With 10 bedrooms and 10 baths, multiple dining rooms and 5 patios/porches we always had family gathering places and quiet private conversation areas, even a special place for a marriage proposal!! A wonderful heated pool and tennis court that was used often. We absolutely loved our stay and a happy couple will never forget that moment. The owners were wonderful and very helpful making our time so relaxing. Many thanks, we will be back!
Cannot be beat!!!!
If you have a large party and are looking for a place close to Niagara Falls and Niagara-On-The-Lake...look no further!!! This beautiful home and property cannot be beat.
We were a group of 14 adults (7 couples) who spent a week here in July.
Every couple had their own beautiful room with attached bathroom. We cooked breakfast and dinner most nights and and never lacked any utensils to cook with. Our only problem was picking which porch or patio to eat each day. In the morning we enjoyed breakfast in the back of the house along the Niagara River watching the different birds in the bird feeders.
Cocktails at night were usually on a large porch overlooking the beautiful gardens and dinner was spent on a covered patio. The atmosphere was so beautiful, we never wanted to eat inside.
Many of us took long walks in the morning or rode bikes made available by Duncan, the owner. The tennis courts and pool were used every day. To tell you the truth many of us didn't want to leave the property and do the tourist thing. This home was very close to the Falls and Niagara- On-The- Lake and travel to Canada was no problem, even in the busy month of July.
The owners of the property, Duncan and Kathy were a delight. They provided everything we could have possibly needed. This home is immaculate and the surrounding estate is so impeccably maintained, especially the beautiful gardens.
We will find any excuse to rent "Four Winds" again. Duncan and Kathy, thank you for making our stay at Four Winds a week we will never forget.
Thanks, Julie, for such a lovely review. What a great group of people you brought, and Kathy and I were delighted to know how much you enjoyed the house and grounds. We try to make it the kind of place that groups/families want to return to, and we succeed.
A Dream Week
This was the perfect home for our 17-person family reunion, ages 7 to 75. Four Winds is a gorgeous riverfront estate with fantastic porches and lovely gardens. Duncan and Kathy have thought of everything in providing a fully-furnished retreat, and were the consummate hosts. In addition, with the swimming pool, ping pong, tennis courts, the birds and chipmunks, and so much more, the kids were never bored around the house. This was my family's 14th annual reunion, and Four Winds is one of the few to which we would strongly consider returning.
Four Winds far surpassed the expectations of our 16 guests, ranging in age from 7 to 75. The house was spacious, immaculate, and there was a separate quarters off the kitchen where my daughters' family, including 5 boys, stayed and had complete privacy. There were many outdoor patios and the pool and tennis court were pristine. The attic playroom was huge and the boys were well entertained there. Duncan was always available to address any questions or concerns. The kitchen and appliances were state of the art. Bedrooms and living spaces were decorated beautifully with many antiques that highlighted the history of the estate. Bikes were available for rides into the quaint villages of Youngstown and Lewistown. Kids and adults loved visiting nearby Niagara Falls. We also saw a concert at the Art Park in Lewistown and attended a jazz festival there. Four Winds definitely set the bar by which all our future vacations will be judged. We definitely plan on returning in the future.
Getting There: The property is a manageable, if long, day's drive from Chicago, the Eastern Seaboard, Virginia, central North Carolina and most of Eastern Canada. If one is flying, the property is about 40 minutes from the Buffalo-Niagara Falls International Airport with its rental car counters about 100 yards from baggage claim. It's one of the easiest airports in America to get in and out of.Local Attractions: There is an incredible number of things to do in the area, from cultural and historical to sports and recreation. Here are just a few, all within a half-hour drive: * Niagara Falls - One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls is just 10 miles away. If you've never seen it, you must. It is incredible and there are plenty of things to do there, foremost among them the "Maid of the Mist" boat ride that takes you to the very mouth of the Falls. Also lots of hiking trails in the gorge. * Artpark - A wonderful park and arts facility just 3 miles away. All summer long they host concerts by rock and pop artists and daytime arts activities for families. There are hiking trails, fishing docks and picnic sites. * Old Fort Niagara - More than 300 years old, Old Fort Niagara figured prominently in the colonial wars and the War of 1812. It's a wonderful place to visit, even for adults, and there are several live re-enactments during the summer. * Casinos - There are two large nearby casinos, both in Niagara Falls; the Seneca Niagara Casino on the U.S. side and the Fallsview Casino across the border. In addition to gambling and restaurants they showcase big-name entertainment on a regular basis. * Villages of Lewiston and Youngstown - Our house is almost exactly in between two small villages -- Lewiston and Youngstown. Each are less than 3 miles away. Lewiston is the larger of the two and was voted one of the top 10 small towns in America in an on-line poll by USA Today and Rand McNally. Charming and historical, it sports a large supermarket, several good restaurants and has two big festivals in August -- the Art Festival (2nd weekend in August) and the Lewiston Jazz Festival (last weekend in August), along with weekly concerts in the Gazebo on its main steet. Lewiston was the final stop on the Underground Railroad. Smaller, Youngstown also has a market and a couple of restaurants, as well as a great farm market and its own weekly outdoor concert. * Jet Boat Ride - This is one of the top 5 adventure rides in America, shooting through the Niagara River's class 5 rapids. A must-do attraction with departures from both Lewiston and Youngstown. * Niagara-on-the-Lake - Across the border (and right across the river) is the beautiful town of Niagara on the Lake, the prettiest town in the Province of Ontario. Lots of good restaurants and cute shops, it is also home to the Shaw Festival, a major Canadian theatre festival and the 2nd largest repertory theatre company in North America. * Southern Ontario Wineries - Surrounding Niagara on the Lake are numerous estate wineries. Southern Ontario has a particular micro-climate making it a prime wine-growing region. Many of the wineries have tours, tastings and great restaurants. * Buffalo - Last, but not least, is the city of Buffalo, NY, with dozens of excellent restaurants (including many that will satisfy the palates of even the most sophisticated diners), numerous outdoor concerts, festivals and theater during the summer months and beautiful old homes and historic buildings to tour.
