About Kathy Ocean

We are Jim and Kathy Ocean. We're musicians and concert/event producers who decided to share our little piece of paradise after landing in Guerneville the summer of 2004. We take great pleasure in creating a space where people can relax, explore and recharge, and consider ourselves very lucky to be in the position to meet people from all over the world. We are knowledgeable about the area and are happy to provide tips, suggestions and share some of our favorite and little-known places with you.

Kathy Ocean purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Kathy Ocean chose Russian River

Moving to the Russian River area was a dream come true for both of us. For Jim, it meant reconnecting to his musical roots in Sonoma County from the 70's. For Kathy, it meant fulfilling the lifelong desire to live in the woods near the sea--a longing that began as a child when she had recurring dreams of oceans while trapped in the cornfields of Indiana.

When an unexpected and brief window of opportunity opened up to buy the property--Jim will say it was because our MGB broke down near Jenner, Kathy will say it's because Jim stung her with the question, 'Why did you move all the way to California and never settle near the sea?'--it was during a time when real estate was really hot. We had 24 hours to decide if we were going to radically change our lives around. The decision was made scarier by the fact that the place was priced outside our comfort zone, and to make the numbers work, we would have to rent the cottage on the property. Little did we know we were about to enter into a vocation that we would grow to love & that would give back to us in so many ways.

What makes this cottage unique

The moment we first walked through gate of our future home, we were struck by the wall of green--from the giant 'three sisters' old growth redwood, to the many sun-dappled fruit trees, to the redwood fairy ring (where we eventually married), to the tangle of blackberry vines that inhabit the fence line. We were mesmerized by the gurgling of the creek, the chorus of birds, the sight of butterflies and dragonflies flitting about, and greatly amused by the pileated woodpecker hanging upside down drunk on berries. We found the array of small cottages dotting the grounds enchanting. (They reminded us of a summer camp).

In short, we were sold by the laid back green opulence of this spot which we call 'Hawaii in the Redwoods' during the summer, 'Vermont in the Redwoods' in the fall, and 'Rip Van Winkle in the Redwoods' during winter. We signed on the bottom line and never looked back. And we're happy to share this place's restorative magic with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What an awesome place! Our host were super nice folks and very down to earth. We hope to return as soon as we can and what a cool town to wander around in. The most comfortable bed that I have ever slept in. For those who like to get lost in the softness of pillows this is it. Sure wish we could have stayed more than two days.

Romantic, secluded cabin in the woods near town

  • 5 of 5

The good:

nice hammock for 2 outside plus outside tables on the patio and in the yard under an apple tree

well stocked kitchen with spices and basic cooking supplies

storage

friendly dog

The bad.

I really, really didn't have any issues. And I travel a lot and usually have at least one small annoyance, here everything was perfect.

Perfect for Us!

  • 4 of 5

In the area for 9 days doing wine "research;" had 2-3 tasting appointments every day. It was a great home base for us! We started every day making breakfast in the cabin and then returned in the evening and made dinner. The accommodations are "minimal".... nothing fancy....but it was fine for us! Enjoyed the hot tub most evenings, but as mentioned, it is not private. We didn't spend much time outside the cabin (except in the hot tub) because of the mosquitos. We enjoyed the opportunity to watch a couple of the movies that were available in the cabin (great selection). Of course we watched "Bottle Shock." A very memorable trip!

President's Day Weekend 2017

  • 3 of 5

Nice little cottage tucked away in the woods. Cute and comfy for a quiet get-away. The hosts were very nice, Jim gave us a tour of the property with lots of interesting information. We were there on a very rainy weekend and it would have been nice to have a couch or loveseat in the cabin to sit and read or visit, since we were unable to sit outside on the porch. The hot-tub BBQ area are in the hosts back yard and we felt a bit uncomfortable using them we felt we were in the hosts private space, but then we are from Wyoming and used to more wide-open spaces. Over all a nice weekend and a cozy place.

just what we needed , A NICE GET AWAY WEEK END,

  • 4 of 5

A pleasant place to stay. Nicer than many motels. Quite, and pleasant . I know I may be repeating my self but as near as other homes were located , it was hard to know you had neighbors. Down side was lack of setting, but nothing to be put out over.
