About Kathy Ocean

We are Jim and Kathy Ocean. We're musicians and concert/event producers who decided to share our little piece of paradise after landing in Guerneville the summer of 2004. We take great pleasure in creating a space where people can relax, explore and recharge, and consider ourselves very lucky to be in the position to meet people from all over the world. We are knowledgeable about the area and are happy to provide tips, suggestions and share some of our favorite and little-known places with you.

Kathy Ocean purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Kathy Ocean chose Russian River

Moving to the Russian River area was a dream come true for both of us. For Jim, it meant reconnecting to his musical roots in Sonoma County from the 70's. For Kathy, it meant fulfilling the lifelong desire to live in the woods near the sea--a longing that began as a child when she had recurring dreams of oceans while trapped in the cornfields of Indiana.

When an unexpected and brief window of opportunity opened up to buy the property--Jim will say it was because our MGB broke down near Jenner, Kathy will say it's because Jim stung her with the question, 'Why did you move all the way to California and never settle near the sea?'--it was during a time when real estate was really hot. We had 24 hours to decide if we were going to radically change our lives around. The decision was made scarier by the fact that the place was priced outside our comfort zone, and to make the numbers work, we would have to rent the cottage on the property. Little did we know we were about to enter into a vocation that we would grow to love & that would give back to us in so many ways.

What makes this cottage unique

The moment we first walked through gate of our future home, we were struck by the wall of green--from the giant 'three sisters' old growth redwood, to the many sun-dappled fruit trees, to the redwood fairy ring (where we eventually married), to the tangle of blackberry vines that inhabit the fence line. We were mesmerized by the gurgling of the creek, the chorus of birds, the sight of butterflies and dragonflies flitting about, and greatly amused by the pileated woodpecker hanging upside down drunk on berries. We found the array of small cottages dotting the grounds enchanting. (They reminded us of a summer camp).

In short, we were sold by the laid back green opulence of this spot which we call 'Hawaii in the Redwoods' during the summer, 'Vermont in the Redwoods' in the fall, and 'Rip Van Winkle in the Redwoods' during winter. We signed on the bottom line and never looked back. And we're happy to share this place's restorative magic with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What an awesome place! Our host were super nice folks and very down to earth. We hope to return as soon as we can and what a cool town to wander around in. The most comfortable bed that I have ever slept in. For those who like to get lost in the softness of pillows this is it. Sure wish we could have stayed more than two days.

If you're looking to get away, unplug and be surrounded by beauty, then this is the perfect retreat. The hosts are warm and simply amazing. This was the exact type of get-away we were looking for. Very comfortable accommodations too :)

A perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what we were looking for! The cabin was cozy but not cramped. The kitchen was well stocked with spices, coffee, tea, etc. The area was beautiful and the owners were on-site to answer any questions and strike up a nice conversation. Freindly folk without intruding on our vacation. We will definitely be going back! Highly recommend!

Affordable getaway tucked away in the woods

  • 5 of 5

I had never stayed in Guerneville prior to this trip. This is a bit of a bohemian community and Kathy and Jim's place is no exception. The cottage is tucked away under some redwood trees at the edge of their property. The unit is clean, furnishings are nice, and the bed was exceptional. While they live on the property as well (main house), I went two days without seeing a soul so it is quite private. There is a nice hot tub that is always "on" and I took advantage of that on a couple of nights. There are plenty of places to eat and drink locally. The weather in this area is exceptionally moderate; unlike Bodega Bay where I encountered gale force winds off the ocean. It is located in a residential community but it didn't feel like other homes were on top of me. There is plenty of off street parking. The location is away from the main street area of Guerneville by a mile or so; far enough to avoid traffic, crowds, and noise. Kathy and Jim are exceptionally nice people; available if needed but not intrusive. I envisioned that this property is where Neil Young would have lived had he not become rich and famous. The only issue I had was with the wifi; it is quite strong in some areas of the property but not very strong in the cottage. Also, if you have ATT cellular, don't plan on making any calls. Zero bars here and in much of Guerneville.

Lovely setting, needs basic upgrades

  • 3 of 5

We stay in 3-4 vacation rentals every year and many in the Russian River. We like the location and the yard of this one and felt fortunate to find an affordable property that allows dog. However, two major issues with the property: 1) there is no sofa/comfortable place to sit. Replacing the desk with a loveseat or a couple chairs with ottoman would be a huge improvement, for example. 2) Our dog NEVER pees anywhere except outside (truly). Upon our arrival, he immediately lifted his leg and peed on the carpet. We were mortified and immediately cleaned it up using the carpet cleaner spray provided. As our stay continued, we realized the reason that happened is that many other dogs have done the same thing, as evidenced by the stains and faint smell that persisted throughout our visit. It has become clear to me that a dog-friendly rental should strive to be carpet-free, which we will look for going forward.

Very cute, relaxing and quiet

  • 5 of 5

We felt very welcome and had a great time. Everything that was described was accurate. There is a cute little doggy that came by everyday to check on us and we were close to town, but not too close.

the cottage was the perfect size for two people and had allot to do (movies, books, these cool blocks...I think they were for kids but yes I played with them...) There is also a binder with all sorts of ideas and local attractions if you are looking for things to do. The owners are also nice and will give suggestions.

It was also so so so quiet, but not in a creepy way. The property was very peaceful and restful. My husband and i got up early and sat in the fairy circle and enjoyed the mist.

I was sad to leave. It felt like home from the second we got there, you can tell that the owners enjoy having guests and make the effort to provide everything they can to make your stay nice. I would like to come back someday :)

Cozy, comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed my stay at your little cottage. The bed was very comfy and the movie selection was great. I was greeted by Jim Ocean, the owner, who was very nice and gave me a tour of their property. I also met Kathy Ocean, who was just as gracious. I would definitely recommend this hideaway for anyone who wants a quiet time. Thanks again for respecting my privacy.
