About the property

Main House, 3 Beds, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6) + Apartment 2 Beds, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Casa Sorpresa (Surprise House) is in the city center of La Paz, on same block of the City Museum and very close to Malecon, to the Cathedral Square and to the shopping and supermarkets area (walking distance).

You cannot see Casa Sorpresa from the street, but once you cross the front door the house welcomes you with a large and peaceful patio, a very quiet and reserved place. No one can see you while you're relaxing in the pool!

Main House

The courtyard always provides shade, thanks to the house layout and to the presence of a large mango tree and a tangerine tree.

Casa Sorpresa has been built just 5 years ago, with wonderful finishes and ample spacing.

The house features 3 bedrooms (2 king size and 2 single beds). Rooms have their private access to the patio and their windows overlook the pool. The two king size bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.

Large Mexican style kitchen with every modern appliance (electric oven, dishwasher, side by side fridge, espresso machine, gas stove, microwave). The kitchen is directly connected to the living room and can host you and your friends for dinner. The outside covered patio features a second kitchen and is equipped for outdoor lounging and dining.

Every room is air conditioned (kitchen included). Guests of main house have an indoor garage for 1 car at their disposal. Pool cleaning and plants are taken care of by the owner.

In the same property you can rent an apartment with indipendent entrance. It offer 1 king beedroom, 1 double bedroom, 2 bathrooms, living room with kitchen, covered terrace. Living and bedrooms are air conditioned.

Only if you rent the apartment, you can not use the pool, the covered parking and the courtyard.

The main house and the apartment have their own privacy, but we prefer to rent both houses for a large group of guests.

Great home for large family

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the nicest homes we have stayed at in Baja. The house is fully furnished with all the necessities you need. It is very clean and well maintained. The pool was a great feature to have while it was hot during the day. It is located very close to the malecon and beach and we walked there daily. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in La Paz!

The owner is very responsive via email

Beautiful courtyard. Kitchen and living area has lots of room. Master bath and bedroom is great.

  • 4 of 5

We leased the whole property for 4 of us. Friends couldn’t come at last minute so we had plenty of room! The property has an unusual lay out. The master area is in the main house. Two bedrooms and a bath are reached by out side stairs. Another bedroom is also reached from outside. Then there is a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchen in yet another stairway. Great for 2 families. We all stayed in the main house where our son and grandson slept on the sectional and were comfortable. It was not ideal but it worked.

The house was very clean and just as pictured. We were very comfortable. Our rent car fit in the garage, which was an added bonus.

Antonio is a great host. We saw him in town on several occasions and he wanted to be sure we were comfortable.

This was our 3rd trip to La Paz and our son’s first. We visited several restaurants and went fishing with great results. The place to go for fishing at a reasonable price is the Bay of Dreams. Locals can tell you were it is. Go a day before and make arrangement with the captain. Beautiful water and lots of fish. $130 for two of us.

We did not find the location to be within walking distance. If you are a runner, in excellent shape and 20 something you might be able to walk. We are seniors and all of us are not in shape. We were thankful for the car. The neighborhood is very nice and for the most part well kept. We felt very safe there and recommend it to anyone, especially s large group. Convenient to the supermarket and restaurants.

Visit the beaches when you come to La Paz! They are gorgeous.

Amazing garden. Main house is really nice, although the rooms do not communicate. We are a family with young kids, and that was not ideal for us. More convenient for 4 adults or a family with teenagers.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived into La Paz mid-afternoon on New Years Day. We met the 'contact' for the house, Antonio, at his Gelato shop near the Malacon. A short drive away was this villa.

As others have stated, the curb appeal may leave a bit to be desired. However, once you enter the courtyard, you will be amazed at the quality of this Villa.

We rented the villa with two families - 4 adults and 3 teenagers. One couple enjoyed the 'main house' which is in the back of the property. This has the spacious and well-laid out kitchen, the living room, a huge bedroom and bathroom. The other couple enjoyed the spacious upstairs suite, which had its own private staircase entry. Again, a good size bedroom and large bathroom. One of the boys stayed in the lower room, with a bathroom he could use across the courtyard, while two other boys enjoyed the separate apartment, which had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large living/kitchen area and its own balcony. So we ultimately had five bedrooms in use, and each bedroom had access to its own bathroom.

The villa was VERY comfortable. We really enjoyed the huge open courtyard, with a private pool, several comfy sitting areas, two covered sitting areas, and a tangerine tree that provided us with our daily dose of fresh fruit. We cooked several meals in the well-appointed kitchen, and used the gas grill in the courtyard. The LEY grocery store was located a short two blocks away and had absolutely everything we could have wanted, all at very reasonable prices.

We had two cars, so we parked one in the protected garage, and the other directly in front of the villa, on the street. We considered it a safe area.

The wi-fi worked great, and they even had SKY television in the lounge, although we really didn't watch TV.

We particularly loved how they decorated the villa, and we appreciate the excellent style.

While in La Paz, we took advantage of the whale shark snorkeling, we went fishing (about a 1 hour drive away, took a day trip to Todos Santos, and enjoyed walking around and exploring.

There are only two complaints that we had: there was a bad smell in the living area of the apartment; and please note that the villa is located directly next to a museum, which had some traditional Mexican dance lessons going on - the music and foot stomping was loud, but usually over by 9pm.

If you are looking for a private home, away from any crass tourism and in a fun, local neighborhood, this is your kind of place. We highly recommend it.

Awesome house

  • 5 of 5

The property is located in a visually unappealing spot for the most part so we were kind of worried but when we got In we were blown away. This house had it all. The rooms were very private and had there own full bathrooms. The kitchen was awesome both indoor and out. The location is a 15 minute walk from the malecon, about 7 blocks and you can swing by the church and multiple restaurants on the way. Also there is a Ley supermarket two blocks away which is very convenient. The 4 of us had a blast here and when we come back we will most likely be booking this house again. The property manager Antonio was very helpful and is a very knowledgable. He told us about places to visit, eat, and even set us up with an awesome fishing trip. Stayed for 10 days, had a car for 3 days and felt safe and stayed entertained the whole time. Around 5-7 pm there is a dance studio next door that practiced so we even got free music and tap dancing at dinner. This place was awesome and you will not be disappointed.

Spacious Gathering Place

  • 5 of 5

We had this villa (main house and apartment) for two weeks over Christmas, with our numbers ranging between two and ten as family members came and went. It was perfect for our needs, and gave us ample space to congregate (mainly in the courtyard with its large mandarin orange tree) and to get away from one another, as desired. It was as advertised, although potential visitors might want to know the pool is really a plunge pool (hard to tell from the photos on the web site) and not heated. The apartment and one of the main house bedrooms are up significant flights of stairs. This was not an issue for us.

The main kitchen was well equipped. We cooked major Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners there and ate them outdoors by the outdoor kitchen. We didn't have occasion to use the the apartment kitchen although we did borrow the griddle from there for cooking breakfasts. We encountered several random plumbing issues over our stay. Each time the manager's response was prompt and appropriate. Thank you, Antonio.

The shuttle bus by EcoBajaTours from Los Cabos Airport (SJD) provided excellent service. This was important to our group arriving from disparate places in Canada and the United States because it was more direct and economical to fly there than to La Paz. We used the local buses to get to some places in La Paz and the shuttle buses from the bus station at the Malecon (15 minute walk) to visit Balandra and Tecolote beaches. We also rented a car on one occasion. If you want to rent a car between Christmas and New Years you will need to reserve it well in advance. Secure parking is provided at Casa Sorpresa.

As we didn't have a car for most of our stay, we really appreciated the proximity to the Ley grocery store, and we also used the Mercado Bravo. Try their empanadas. The landscape is dotted with restaurants. We appreciated morning coffees and hot chocolates from Arabica (G. Faria and 5 de Mayo). Our group really enjoyed pozole at a Sinaloan restaurant on Felix Ortega just east of the ballpark (Arturo C. Nahl) and fish tacos at McFisher. We felt we were in convenient walking distance to the Malecon and the Centro Historico. The real attraction is the Sea of Cortez and the marine life. I would recommend staying at the Casa Sorpresa as a base for visiting La Paz and surrounding areas.
