About the property

Two story home behind walled garden, separate one bedroom Casita, and roof patio

Casa Escuela Bilingue – a piece of history in the heart of San Miguel.

Location: Centro in San Miguel de Allende (Five minute walk to the Parroquia or to the Instituto Allende)

Accommodations: 2 bedrooms and 2 baths in main house. Third bedroom and bath in casita.

This unique home in the heart of San Miguel began as a two-room bilingual school in the 1950’s, owned and run by noted educator and writer August Irving Ramirez. It was renovated and expanded in 2002 into a spacious and charming retreat.

Nestled quietly off the main road, Zacateros , Casa Escuela Bilingue, with its two gardens and 3 private bedrooms, is a perfect place to return to after a day of exploring the many things to see and do in the city.

Located on a private lane, you enter the home through a beautiful walled courtyard with outdoor sitting areas and a lush garden. Stepping inside, you enter the large living room, dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. In the living room, one of the couches turns into a foldout sofa-bed if required. A large second bedroom (with a king or two singles) and private bathroom, with large French doors onto the garden, is up three stairs from the main room.

Upstairs, there is a large master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a private balcony overlooking the garden. Across the landing is a lovely covered terrace, or sala, with built-in seating, washing facilities and views of the garden. An iron spiral staircase takes you up to the roof top terrace and a garden with a view of the surrounding city and Parroquia.

Separate from the main house, a private casita with a double bed and private bath opens onto both the private lane and the garden.

Great shopping, restaurants and groceries are just steps away on San Miguel’s best shopping street, but the private passageway and interior gate create a very quiet location. Within one block in either direction, you will find several fine restaurants, small supermarkets, an ice cream shop, and an organic grocery store, several wonderful shops for talavera pattery and tiles, Oaxacan rugs, metalwork and a broad range of Mexican folk art.

There is a house keeper who will be available once a week, a gardener who tends to the many plants and flowered pots several times a week, and private laundry facilities for your use. The house is also fitted with a water purification and pressure system. The home has three gas fireplaces – located in the living room and the two bedrooms in the main house.

There is a local property management company on call two blocks away to deal with any concerns that may arise during a rental period.

For home entertainment, the home has two TVs , a DVD player, a CD player, and access to cable TV.

Keywords: Located in Centro area off Zacateros (one of best shopping streets in town) with entrance to home off private laneway, two-storey home with a separate casita, second floor covered patio and private patio off master bedroom, two walled-in gardens located in interior courtyard and rooftop

About Pearl Ing or Kingsley Watts

We are a Canadian couple, born and raised in Toronto. We have spent time in other regions of Mexico over many years and decided to buy a property in San Miguel de Allende in 2011.

Pearl Ing or Kingsley Watts purchased this house in 2011

Why Pearl Ing or Kingsley Watts chose Zona Centro

We came to visit some friends in Summer 2011 and fell in love with San Miguel and this house in particular. It was originally a small bilingual school converted into a home some years ago. We hope others will enjoy the uniqueness, charm and peacefulness of this house as much as we do. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

A Taste of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Casa Escuela Bilingue is as close to a perfect vacation hideaway as one could hope. The house, inside and out, is a work of art. If you stay there, plan to pick a lounge chair outside to read amidst the tropical foliage either downstairs by the lime tree or on the roof near the fig tree. Indoors you will find all amenities that make your visit comfortable such as a well supplied kitchen and plenty of hot water and of course wifi. The location is better than perfect and you can walk to most everywhere. I only hope that on my return visit to SMA Casa Escuela will be available.

Colonial Charm with Modern Amenities

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter, and I just came back from San Miguel having spent a week at Casa Escuela Bilingue. What a delightful house, garden, and casita! We couldn't have been happier. The house is ideally located off the main road but far enough down a charming laneway as to ensure privacy and quiet. The house is decorated impecably and exudes old world charm all the while provding the comforts of home. It was such a treat to shower in the morning under a large rain shower head with windows opening onto the garden below. We spent early mornings in the garden, drinking coffee under jacaranta trees and evenings sipping white wine to the sounds of ragtime piano played by the neighbour next door. I highly recommend Casa Escuela Bilingue and look forward to a return visit!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

I have just returned from a month stay at this casa and cannot recommend it highly enough. I have been coming to SMA off and on for 20 years and this is by far my favorite rental in this price point. The space is just right - not too big, not too small. We were a group of 3 female friends. We enjoyed our common living areas but also valued the many private spots where we were able to have some solitude and quiet time. Speaking of quiet, a definite plus of this casa is the quiet location. Many rentals in SMA have noise issues. Though we were off one of the busiest streets of SMA, it was always quiet at our casa as it is set back down a lane from the main street and nestled in a garden setting. Another plus that we really appreciated was the purified water system - didn't have to worry about brushing teeth and drinking water and so much easier than lugging the big bottled waters onto a stand. It's location between Centro and San Antonio is perfect for walking to everything. There are restaurants and shops everywhere! Comfortable furniture and beds in addition to a fully equipped kitchen made our stay very relaxing and enjoyable. The only negative is the bathroom in the casita is rather primitive. I think it could be improved with a shower curtain that reached the floor to prevent the water from spreading so far and flooding the room. Other than that, this was a perfect rental. In addition, Pearl and Kingsley, the owners, are delightful and so easy to communicate with. I highly recommend Casa Escuela Bilingue and would happily return.

Ideal Location, Comfort, and Privacy

  • 5 of 5

My family just returned from two weeks at Casa Bilingue. The home's location could not be better: approximately equidistant from the Jardin and Parque Benito Juarez. Like the other reviewers say, it's at the end of a small callejon that connects to the main drag, so privacy and convenience exist side-by-side. The home's collection of eclectic books, movies, and games made for many happy hours and it was a joy to be surrounded with lovely folk art, textiles, and landscaping. A shady ground level patio, mid-level sala, and sunny roof deck offer wonderful outdoor living (and quiet retreats) for sun- and shade-lovers alike. The kitchen is small but highly functional and all three bedrooms are more than ample but cozy. You cannot go wrong with this home--innumerable eating and shopping opportunities are right outside the door and the peaceful comforts of home await inside the property's gate.

Extended Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family had the pleasure of staying at Casa Bilingue for three months. The location off a main street, but down a private lane was excellent. We felt perfectly safe at all times. The home is comfortably outfitted, and the courtyard is lovely to sit in. We all enjoyed the use of the roof-top patio with views of the hills and even of the Parroquia. One of my favorite things about the home is the area across the lane filled with trees and shrubbery. Especially from the upstairs bedroom it was wonderful to look across so much nature in the heart of the town. Thank you, Pearl and Kingsley!

Fantastic place in great location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I (along with two friends) arrived at this wonderful place and we felt as if we were in an oasis. The property manager was there when we arrived - even though with a delayed flight we were a day late (we did call ahead to tell them!). The location of Casa Bilingue is terrific. It is off the street and so is very quiet, but is only a short walk to shops, restaurants and everything San Miguel has to offer.

This place is ideal for two couples since there are nice big bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms for both couples. There is also a casita and a pull out couch, but we didn't use those. The kitchen is well equipped and the gathering spaces are comfortable. There is a good stereo, a TV (which we didn't really use), and good wifi. Another thing worth mentioning is that it is super clean with comfortable beds and nice linens.

Casa Bilingue is better than the pictures!
