The word kaštel derives from the Latin word castellum, and indicates a fortified palace, castle, fort, tower or bulwark. Kaštela city is situated in Kaštela Bay, between the island of Čiovo and the Marjan peninsula, between cities Trogir and Split. Its natural area is sheltered by the mountain Kozjak on the north and surrounded with islands on the south, so it is not surprising that the Kaštela City is man's haven since prehistory.
It is also known for its cultural and fun programme named Kaštela's summer with plenty of various events taking place during the summer among which are the most popular concerts of the vocal groups named 'klapa'. Klapa is a form of traditional a cappella singing in Dalmatia and it is inscribed in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
