About Marilyn Johnson
I am an artist and interior designer, now retired, from the US. My husband is a retired ins. broker. We enjoy living here on the ocean where we can go into PC for social occasions, movies , restaurants, etc. but be home in about 20 minutes to escape the noise and traffic.
Marilyn Johnson purchased this Apartment in 2007
Why Marilyn Johnson chose Panamá Oeste
We have remodeled this house from a three unit apt to a house with this completely private & separate apt on the top floor. We looked at other beach locations but didn't want to be so far from Panama City. This location is perfect for us. We can hear the ocean at night, watch the sea birds during the day and we have a large yard full of tropical vegetation. We share all this and the pool with our guest, but the side entrance and separate entrance gate for the rental parking area gives all of us total privacy.
What makes this Apartment unique
Very large and spacious apartment, quiet country location, just a short drive over the canal to the city of Panama. Very private yard and entrance so renters can have as much privacy as they desire, but are welcome to share our patio and pool area too.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Nice property. Convenient location but outskirts of town a little rough. But security was good
Quiet area except for the dogs. Waking up to birds chirping was awesome.
Exactly as promised and more!
What a great place to stay if you want to get away from resorts! The apartment was exactly as pictured and promised. The location was great and views beautiful. Not one mosquito just the odd Gecko on site. Always an abundance of hot water for showers and maid service once a week.
We arrived later in the evening and after a very long flight it was so nice to have had prior arrangement for Jose (I got his name and email from Marilyn) to pick us up. He was very sweet, drove very nicely, was knowledgeable and spoke English very well. He assisted us at the market where we stopped to pick up a few groceries.
Our hosts; Marilyn & Jerry....I can not say enough; they were wonderful hosts! We really felt they went out of their way to ensure we were happy with our vacation. As we were in Panama for 3 weeks we did have days where we stayed at "home" lounging by the pool. They totally respected our privacy but were always there if we wanted to visit. I'm sure they shook their heads at some of the silly questions we had once back from a days excursion!
I really recommend renting a vehicle and pay the extra for navigation as driving in Panama City is crazy! Again our hosts assisted us with small but valuable pointers of where to go and things to do. Marilyn actually made our reservations for us for dinner at Miraflores Locks (which is a must). She also gave us great suggestions of nearby restaurants and activities. There was also a binder in our apartment of things to see and do and where to eat.
Keeping in mind that this is a 3rd world country, there were a few negatives that have to be anticipated. We walked the sandbar at Veracruz beach and although there was a good amount of garbage thrown about it is still a nice beach. Again our hosts proved valuable as they told us where is safe and not safe.
Now home for a few days I so miss the great Ocean view from our apt where I would do my morning Yoga. While we could not take the hot temperatures and beautiful ocean home with us I know that we returned home having acquired new friends with our hosts and hope that one day they visit our country!
Thanks so much for the great review. We try to make our guests feel at home, and offer any assistance that we can, without being in their way. We're glad that you enjoyed our pool and local beach areas while here, as well as the regular tourist destinations. We also feel that we have made new friends, and hope that you will return some time
Wonderful ocean front vacation
We all enjoyed our stay at Casa las Olas. The apartment is so big, and the ocean views are wonderful, and the pool/garden area is beautiful and relaxing. The kids swan in the ocean that is just across the sea wall from the house, and my husband spent quit a bit of time walking on their beach, enjoying the sea life he found in the tide pools. Of course, we all spent a lot of time in their beautiful pool, and also at the Veracruz beach where we enjoyed the ocean, nice sandy beach, and fresh fish restaurants. They rent paddle boards there too, but maybe next time we’ll ll try that. We rented a car, and went to all the tourist spots. We found that the location of this apartment was really convenient to most of the places we wanted to visit.
We would recommend this vacation apartment to anyone who wants a quiet, but convenient location on the ocean.
Thanks for the review. We enjoyed having your family stay with us. And glad that you enjoyed our apt, pool, beaches. We hope that you return to Panama, and stay with us again
Nice house..... rocky and polluted beach
The accommodations were very nice, everything we expected from the pictures and descriptions. We stayed on the top floor of the house and the owners were on the bottom and were on-site the entire time. The pool was refreshing and clean but covered with shade from noon on.
Although this property is on the beach, you can’t swim as it’s shallow and rocky, what little sand there is, is mixed with dirt so the result is sandy mud…. so no walking or laying on the beach. I’m one that would walk on the beach for a few hours each day, so this was a big disappointment. When we did walk along the water there was lots of debris scattered around and in piles.
The town of Veracruz was about a mile away, we either walked to town or took a taxi. We didn’t speak the language but were very successful in eating at little places scattered throughout their neighborhoods. We usually didn’t know what we ordered until it arrived but didn’t have any problems eating it all. When I walked around the village I would take pictures of little “restaurants”, easily spotted by a card table or two with chairs set up. Later, when we went out to dinner I would show the taxi driver the picture and he would know where to take us…. As I said we didn’t speak the language. We had lots of laughs with the taxi drivers and the restaurant owners.
There were a few fruit stands where we purchased fresh fruit each day and there were a handful of little grocery stores scattered throughout town that carried everything we needed, one of the stores baked fresh bread each morning which was a pleasant surprise.
Veracruz has a nice bus system that takes you into Panama City, the buses leave about every 30 minutes and the charge is $1 per person. Once you are in Panama City Ubers and taxis are everywhere and taxi drivers will negotiate on price.
This is a great place if you want a quiet, relaxing vacation.
We are glad that you liked our apartment, and the town, but disappointed that you found our ocean front not to your liking.
Our beach area is normal ocean sand, not mud, but it is not a “traditional” all sand swimming beach. This is why we describe our property as ocean front, not beach front.
Veracruz beach, about ½ mile along the coast from us, is a traditional swimming beach, with a large expanse of sand, good for sunbathing and swimming. The beach behind our house is the same sand as at nearby Veracruz beach, but here it also has very large volcanic boulders, better for exploring the many tide pools. It is very easy to walk out to the water, allowing people to explore the area, or play in the ocean. Some of our guests have found sand dollars, and other interesting marine life while walking out there at low tide. We even had baby turtles hatch there a few months ago. Our neighbors, and some guests, swim, fish and kayak from our beach area, and one of our guests launched his paddle board from here.
Of course many of our guests prefer swimming and sunning by our pool, and luckily, we have a very large garden area so that they can always be in the sun, if that is their goal.
The extreme tides in Panama sometimes leave debris from the ocean along our coastline, but while not as clutter-free as we would like, neither the area, nor the ocean is polluted.
This is exactly what we were looking for!
This was a wonderful place to stay while we visited Panama! We will definitely go back. The condo is spacious and fully equipped with everything we needed. And the view from the third floor apartment is gorgeous. It is open and light with a large bank of windows. We loved it because we could be in Panama City with 20 minutes, but the condo is in a quiet, relaxing area.
We had rented a car, so were able to take day trips with this as our home base. We (of course) went to the Panama Canal one day and visited Casco Viejo (old town) which is really interesting. Then came back to Marilyn and Jerry's to sit by the salt water pool with a cocktail. We loved the patio area by the pool. It is beautiful! At low tide we liked to walk down to the tide pools on the water and explore. It was really the best of both worlds - the pool for sunning and swimming, and the beach where we looked for treasures! Marilyn and Jerry are great hosts and gave us a lot of information about places to visit and things to see. They also put us in touch with a good driver for times that we didn't want to drive in PC.
There is such a list of places that we were able to visit on day trips from the apartment. One day we drove to the little mountain town of El Valle which is a couple hours' drive from the condo. We also went to the small airport in PC (Albrook), and took a plane to Isla Contadora in the Pearl Islands - spectacular. All in all, it was a wonderful experience for us. Marilyn and Jerry, we will be back! Thanks so much!
Sallie, it was great having you and Mike spend your vacation here in our apartment. It is gratifying when our vacation guests appreciate all that we have to offer here, and have a good time both exploring Panama and spending time here in Majagual/Veracruz
Beautiful Oceanside Penthouse
We totally enjoyed our stay. It’s a beautiful, relaxing place to be. You can’t beat the sound of the waves from the ocean, with the beautiful breezes coming down from the mountain. The accommodations are large, open and spacious, and stocked with all the essentials. We enjoyed the salt water pool and relaxing on the patio loungers, taking in the sites of the tropical trees, flowers and the ocean tides. Tropical birds calling complete the atmosphere. We enjoyed a meal out at a local restaurant, KariMar, and stopped in frequently at one of the local supermarkets only a few mins drive away. Panama City is about a 15 minutes drive. If you do not have your own transportation, there are taxis available. We didn’t use any of the public transportation, so can’t comment on the cost or ease. Jerry and Marilyn are excellent host and hostess! We highly recommend Casa Las Olas as a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy the vistas.
We really enjoyed having you stay with us. This is a good place for people who want to hit the tourist sites, maybe have a dinner or shopping in Panama City, but relax in our quiet garden atmosphere, just 15 minutes down the coast. Or, you can relax in our local beach restaurants and on our local beach.
there is a nice long beach with open-air beach restaurants and paddle boarding rentals near our house
