About MELANIE VANKOTEN-EVE
We are native Montanans, Joe is a CPA, I am a retired Insurance Agency owner. We have invested in farms & ranches for the past 20 years. Between us we have 8 children , ages 37 to 17.
MELANIE VANKOTEN-EVE purchased this Villa in 2005
Why MELANIE VANKOTEN-EVE chose Whitefish
Actually, this was to be our dream home in Whitefish - on the lake & by the ski area! I put my heart & soul into every detail..... then we accidentally fell in love with Flathead Lake, where we moved during the remodel & addition on our Lakeshore home. Being Native Montanans, we love the mountains & the lakes & cannot imagine a better place to live than western Montana ! Whitefish is great in any season for your outside adventures!
What makes this Villa unique
Located right on the lake, in the winter we can watch ice fisherman with their catch of the day & cross country skiers gliding over the frozen lake surface ....And in summer, friends boat into our dock for a BBQ or drink, & to let their kids enjoy the water. The year round ambiance of the city of Whitefish, with its top-notch restaurants & local flavor is always enjoyable. Of all the celebrations, 2 of our favorites are the 4th of July with its fireworks display off of city beach, and the Winter Carnival weekend (February) with its parades, polar plunge, & overall festivities. Access to the wonderful Montana outdoors is so important. Also, the peacefulness of the lake & mountain views is beyond words... The best of all worlds!.

Came down with 9 people for a ski weekend and this place was amazing.
Great location and property
We booked the house for 2 families to have a vacation together. The location was incredible - right no Whitefish lake, close to downtown and 40 minutes from Glacier Park entrance. The house was very nice with plenty of rooms for 2 families with 8 kids. Being on the lake was wonderful. We were able to rent a boat and use the dock with paddle boards. The views from all of the decks were stunning. The only issue was the train. They are very, very loud and run all night, making sleep difficult for anyone who is a light sleeper.
We are so happy our Lake home worked well for your two families - we think it is a terrific, spacious floor plan for large groups such as yours! Whitefish Lake views from the decks & all the bedrooms are amazing Year 'round. While our home has triple insulated windows and walls, we do find maybe one (1) in 10 or so groups is bothered by the trains. Part of the ambiance of our area is the train that comes right through downtown Whitefish! ... we even had one family rent with us the entire month of August for the prior 3 summers in a row, as they loved the house & the location so much (they built a condo on the lake this year, so will have their own home to go to now). With 4 bedrooms in the walk-out basement on the lake side, I like to think we can cater to those who want to avoid the train.
Loved our stay at this home. We were 3 families, 2 kids each and this house accommodated us perfectly. Close to town, great kitchen...happy, happy. The train behind the home took some adjusting to and it would have been nice to have some window coverings in the upper master but the train can't be helped and became almost charming towards the end of our stay.
Spectacular lake home!
Wonderful hosts - thank you for sharing your beautiful Whitefish Lake home with us for our monthly June vacation! The house had everything our family needed for a comfortable stay. We would love to come back!
January Ski Vacation
What a wonderful place to call home for our group of 5 couples while on our annual Ski Vacation! This home is perfect for entertaining with the kitchen & Great Room together on the main level where our party mainly hung out. A little cold for the outside BBQ, but the kitchen/living area was cozy with the gas fireplace. Kitchen was well stocked and plenty of towels for the hot tub & baths. Gorgeous views from all rooms in this home of the frozen lake across to Whitefish Mountain. Lots of wonderful snow our entire stay. With a 20 minute drive to the ski area and a short drive to the downtown restaurants & bars, it was a prefect location for us. The 5- bedroom/5-bath floor plan allowed us lots of privacy & room to spread out in. The heated floor 2 car garage with the built-in ski rack was wonderful to unpack all our snow-filled ski gear at days end! An enjoyable home in a wonderful winter setting, we look forward to next year! Owners were very nice & even left us a gift basket.
The owner/manager of this home is unethical and unprofessional
This house sits directly adjacent to the railroad tracks with frequent trains running around the clock. The house vibrates when the trains pass and quite loud. This was never disclosed to us. In addition, the heat did not work in the downstairs area where most of the bedrooms were. It was very cold. This was not disclosed to us prior to arrival. When I asked the owner for an adjustment on the rental rate she refused. Later she charged us almost $100 to refinish an end table in the living room because a glass left a water mark on the wood. There were no coasters and this is normal wear and tear. We did not have a good experience with this unethical owner/manager.
Oh my, as much as we try to please all our guests, obviously some are not happy no matter how much we try. Yes, the railroad does run by a good portion of the homes along Whitefish Lake, but the railroad is very much a part of the Whitefish ambience (note other guest reviews, it truly is not an issue for the majority of guests, winter or summer!) Our home is very well-built with triple wall insulation and is very sound structurally. We did discover a problem with the boiler that supplies radiant heat to the floors to about 20% of the entire home, which included the garage, along with the upper master and lower master suites the day before this renter arrived. HOWEVER, our boiler service had us purchase portable electric heaters that very day for these spaces, AND WE NOTIFIED the guest of such by email and text before his arrival. When our housekeeper arrived (saving me a two hour trip) to help the guest locate a plunger (one on each level), she noted the entire house was very warm, (including the garage!) and demonstrated the thermostats for the rest of the 80% of the house not affected by the boiler. I do realize guests coming from Southern states may not understand how cold our Montana winters are, but rest assured this home is quite cozy!! There also is a gas fireplace on the main level in the Great Room/Kitchen area and one in the Master bedroom, both of which put out a lot of heat! There are many large windows in this home, which allows for all the wonderful views, that may feel cool without properly turning up the heat in winter! We do take care of Our Guests within reason and if this home was questionable in anyway we most certainly would've found alternate housing for this guest. Please contact the Owner with any concerns. PS We do have 2 sets of coasters in the Great Room area...
