Relax and Revitalize at the Salt Hill House on Salt Cay

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Relax and revitalize at Salt Hill House on Salt Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Salt Cay is the 'Island Time Forgot' and will remind you of the Old Caribbean. Come see why the TCI is Beautiful By Nature.

Salt Cay offers world class scuba diving with Salt Cay Divers, whale watching and snorkeling as well.

Salt Cay is an historic island with a candidacy for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historic salinas, windmill ruins and building ruins of the centuries old salt industry remain on Salt Cay.

The last home on the island it is private and secluded. Situated on a rise on the southern end of Salt Cay, it offers surprising views in each directions. Nothing is far away and it is an easy bike ride or walk to the dock, Salt Cay Divers and the Coral Reef Cafe. Shopping at Dickenson's, Miss Pat's and Nettie's is readily available as well.

Great snorkeling is a short walk down the trail to the beach. The house is a great starting spot for shell, flotsam and jetsam searches on the various beaches nearby. Secluded beach areas, such as the South Land's End are within easy walking distance. Check out the rocky shores for the blow hole.

Salt Hill House is situated near 'Queen's Land' with plenty of open space surrounding it. There are free roaming donkeys and cows as reminders of the salt trade times. Chickens, geckos, herons and Osprey, may well come and go around and in the yard as Mother Nature dictates during your stay. This is a modern home in the middle of old Caribbean times and ways.

The screened 'Florida' type porch is a joy to spend your day or evening hours relaxing (and napping) on comfy rattan furniture. The dining room table is on the airy screen porch as well. The screen room is on the south side of the property and features a sunning porch with lounge chairs and total privacy.

The house is cooled by Caribbean style shutters with screened windows to catch the trade winds that bathe the island. There are ceiling fans in the living areas as well as oscillating fans for guest use.

A whale watching deck on the north side of the home affords an almost 360 degree view of the island, beaches and ocean. A quiet little deck at the back door allows you to catch the island breezes and afternoon shade.

The whale watching deck is a perfect place to watch the sun rise and set. Take your coffee up there in the morning and watch the island wake up. In the evening, hope you catch a 'Green Flash' on the horizon. Sip a cold drink and remember the day.

The home itself has a wide screen HD TV, DVD collection (described by a guest as 'fantastic'), CD collection, iPod docking station and surround sound Yamaha stereo system.

The kitchen features an electric range, full refrigerator and freezer, entertainment island, microwave, Krups coffee maker, and a cook's array of tools, kitchen wares, dishes, glasses and basics with which to cook. We can't promise what's in the fridge, but usually there are the basics with which to cook or make a sandwich. Stores are nearby to help with those incidentals not available during your stay.

There is a Weber gas grill for evenings you choose to cook at home, maybe getting fresh fish from local fishermen at the dock.

The bedroom features a comfortable deep mattress queen sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets. There are two large hanging closets. The couch is a new rattan futon with a full size temperpedic-type mattress. We can verify it is a great napping place as well. There are also two inflatable twin beds.

The bath has a glass brick shower, tiled counter and large closet for extra guests and items. There is a private, outdoor shower for your use as well.

WiFi is subject to availability and the equipment guests bring with them. The Coral Reef has WiFi subject to availability as well. Cell phone service is quite good depending on your service, but get an international plan because your carrier's roaming charges will apply.

There are bicycles on site for guest use.

Check out The Compass Rose Cottage on Facebook and see even more images and great links. Be sure to look for the St. Patrick's Day Humpback Whale encounter on You Tube as well.

About Sarah

We are the lucky family that bought Joel and Michele McNair's beautiful home, formerly known as The Compass Rose. We fell in love with Salt Cay in 2005 when we landed in what appeared to be "nowhere". By the evening, we'd seen whales, blue water like we'd never known, and were engaged to be married. After many trips, we returned in the winter of 2017 with our 8-yr-old twins and all of our parents and decided it was time to make Salt Cay a permanent part of our family's story. We are so lucky to have been ushered graciously into ownership by Michele and Joel. Do yourself a favor and read Michele's 'Times of The Islands' articles documenting the history and people of Salt Cay.

Sarah purchased this house in 2017

Why Sarah chose Caribbean

Location location location. It is the last home on the island and affords complete privacy and an almost 360 degree view of the island. But also, it is well appointed and very comfortable. It's a modest house, but it's filled with so many comfortable spots it feels like an estate. The home has been available for rent for over 11 years with many satisfied guests who return again and again. The home has a verified history of safe, dependable renting.

What makes this house unique

While on island we enjoy the company of the Islanders who have opened their hearts to us. Salt Cay is family and sharing their histories and lives is, as with all families, deeply rewarding. Meet the people of Salt Cay and become part of our family.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a wonderful, romantic and adventurous time on the island time forgot. However the local folks we met will never be forgotten for their kindness and hospitality. The island is a true place of serenity. We truly enjoyed staying at the Compass Rose and found no other place on island that compares.

Car: not necessary

The last house in Salt Cay's south district, Salt Hill House offers private, secluded vacationing on an island where time has stood still. The island offers an Old Caribbean style of life with fantastic snorkeling, diving and whale watching in season. Be busy, or not at all.

Relaxation at it's best!

  • 5 of 5

Salt Cay is the most relaxing and private vacation that we have ever taken. Beautiful beaches, friendly people, and lots of sun. Debbie, at Salt Cay Divers, can arrange anything from whale watching to groceries. She also manages Compass Rose for the owners who are great to deal with. All my emails were responded to quickly.

Compass Rose is a very comfortable, clean, and private 1 bedroom house. The only noise that you ever hear is the occasional rooster or donkey. No car, train, plane or people noise ever. Everything you might need is provided. The photos are accurate. You can walk all around the island on secluded paths or take one of the bikes provided. It is a good idea to rent a golf cart as the roads are pretty rough. Wi-Fi is pretty good and there is a marine radio for emergencies. My Verizon apple phone worked great also. The raised whale watching deck is a great place to watch the sunrise/sunset or gaze at the stars.

Everywhere we went people were always friendly and helpful. We even volunteered at the local school that has 10 students. Privacy is the key word. When you go to the beach you probably be the only one on it, or snorkeling by yourself.

Don't miss ribs on Sunday at the Coral Reef ( a small restaurant/bar) or pizza at Porter's Island Thymes

( a pub/restaurant) on Friday. Our favorite was having a nice breakfast at the Coral Reef, right on the water, and watching for whales. Basic groceries can be found at Dickenson's, a small store nearby.

We love Hawaii but Salt Cay is closer, much more private, and the white sand beaches are better. We can't wait to go back to Salt Cay and stay at Compass Rose!

Compass Rose Shines

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I recently spent 7 days at the Compass Rose in Salt Cay. The location was well south of the main areas of the island which made you feel a little secluded. This was not a problem as we felt we were on the island by ourselves. The house was clean and had everything you could want to do your cooking if inclined to do so . We were both surprised how large the house was upon arrival. lots of space to hang both dive and clothing . The breeze coming from both sides of the house allowed us to leave the fans off for most of our visit. whThe outside deck areas surrounding the house allowed you to sit anywhere. The upper deck at night while seeping a cognac and enjoying the stars was incredible. The view during the day allowed you to see both the Atlantic and the Caribbean . We would definitely stay here again if it was available . Bikes are available but the roads are very rocky. I would suggest a golf cart to get around the island which can be rented from Candy

A wonderful house, on a wonderful island

  • 5 of 5

The Compass Rose was the absolute perfect place for us on Salt Cay. It was furnished fully with everything we could have ever needed (plenty of dishes/cups/glasses/kitchen utensils) towels & sheets, etc.

The Rose is situated in the South of the island, and you get an amazing sunrise AND sunset (especially on the raised deck), as well as a perfect, cooling breeze blowing through all day. The house is furnished with plenty of fans (ceiling and floor type) and staying cool was not a problem.

There is a modern entertainment system (with Bose surround sound system), microwave, a nice BBQ grill, fridge, screened in porch area with fans, all of the furniture is comfortable, functional, and very attractive.

The owners have done an excellent job with decorations and furnishings.

The yard is nice and level, with numerous local types of plants growing throughout the space. (Including Turks Heads cactuses/cacti)

We really enjoyed the outdoor shower (there is an indoor one as well!) and sitting on the upper deck watching the sunset.

We found the Compass Rose to be just within reach of everything we needed on the island, but just far enough out of reach to ensure privacy and solitude.

We would definitely reccomend the Rose and look forward to hopefully being able to stay there again soon!

We thoroughly enjoyed the house and the island. We found everything easily accessible on foot or on bikes. We also liked the location of the house and the easy walk to the beach or to "downtown". A small and sprarsely populated island. Debbie and her crew were very helpful and made all the arrangements for us

Just Like Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have stayed at the Compass Rose three different times and it has become like home for us. Michele and Joel make their home our home and in turn, treat it as such. When we want to cook, we have a great BBQ and kitchen to use. The fridge often has everything from mayo to Rooster sauce. We often go to the dock and buy fresh fish and grill it at home.

Evening we love to sit on the deck and watch the sunset after a refreshing shower outside in the breeze.

We have watched the Compass Rose evolve over the last few years. The addition of the screened porch as living room and dining room has really stepped things up a notch. It is often a race in the afternoon to see who gets to the comfy couch out there for their nap! My husband takes his laptop out there and makes the dining table his office when he has to do some work (or play Poker most likely!). Evenings we take a walk, go to the Coral Reef to kareoke or Sunday ribs, or just for a cocktail to visit with other divers and visitors. If we stay in we star gaze and look for satellites and fall stars, pull a movie out of the DVD collection or just enjoy the screen porch and read a book while listening to music.

The bed is really comfortable and we sleep like rocks while there.

The house has screen windows and adjustable shutters with no glass, and screen doors. Trade winds blow in and cool the house which makes it all so refreshing.

Diving is great and our favorite dive spot, Powerhouse, is also an easy snorkel from the beach below the house. We go treasure hunting for beach glass and stuff that washes up on the eastern shore most every day as well. The southern end of the island is not to be missed.

But North Beach! It's like 2 miles or so of white sand beach with no one on it! Wow, this has to be one of the most unusual places around where you can walk on beaches and feel like you are the only one's there.

We highly recommend Salt Cay and staying at the Compass Rose.

Loved Salt Cay - Loved Compass Rose

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have visited Salt Cay several times, and have had the pleasure of staying at Compass Rose. It is a delightful cottage - beautifully situated where you can watch brilliant sunrises and sunsets and once we even saw a 'green flash'. We wandered on deserted pristine white beaches on the North Shore, walked to the Southern point with its spectacular rocky shore, and wherever we went, we were always delighted by the friendliness and kindness of the local people. We spent most mornings diving with Salt Cay divers (top notch group of people) - some afternoons on whale watching trips or snorkeling - some afternoons beach combing - some afternoons just relaxing and enjoying the comfort and amenities of 'our' cottage. The well appointed kitchen allowed us to make our own meals when we felt like it, but there was always the evening draw of Coral Reef Cafe for cocktails and dinner (try their wonderful conch feast!) and a fun party atmosphere. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of life on the mainland, and want to enjoy a simpler life - visit Salt Cay, and stay at Compass Rose.
