About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + 2 Baths (sleeps up to 13)

This very large house (3500 sq ft) will accomodate large parties of visitors. Has the feel of the out doors, since it is located amidst 20 acres of scenic views but with short distance to down town areas. Recently retired health care professional/masseuse, (kids are grown) wanting to have others experience the joy of Taos living while he is gone to timeshares at other locations. Need a get away from Albuquerque or some other crowded metropolis? Just pack a small case of clothes and come ready to share my home away from home in the magical Land of Enchantment. Santa Fe has nothing on Taos (except for crowds.) A 900 year old pueblo and museums that chronicle its history on the Santa Fe Trail. This part of the southwest is much older than the rest of the United States. Kit Carson is buried in our local cemetery. A 650 foot bridge spans the Rio Grande River leaves you with vistas that are similar to the Grande Canyon. Had the best snow in the southern Rockies last season.

Keywords: Large Hacienda, trimmed w/Cedar and other woods, vigas, isolated but close to town, hiking, galleries, full kitchen seats 12 comfortably, spacious rooms, value but sumptuous.

About The Owner

Individual who loves to travel (4 to 5 times a year.) I build custom furniture which is used throughout the house. Homeowner has lived within this community for 40 years and loves to share his favorite places with visiting guests. I grew up in Albuquerque. I have a fiance who also owns rental properties, so we just go to one of our other places when someone uses this house.

The Owner purchased this house in 1995

Why The Owner chose New Mexico

I have been a Professional in Taos since 1974 and am available to give you insight into how to be a visitor but be as knowledgeable as a local. .

What makes this house unique

I use wood fires as a SUPPLEMENT to heat this house in the winter, so it is very energy efficient. The wood in this house will amaze you (vigas, floors, cedar cabinets and beams.) Located within walking distance of the most photographed church (St Frances of Asisi) in northern NM you are adjacent to National Forest, Ranchos Plaza, or downtown activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My three month stay for a work contract at a hospital in the community was a delight. I felt like part of the family in my home away from home. I plan on coming again for future contracts. I especially liked the country feel and the peace and quiet, since I was working the night shifts during my stay.

perfect for our extended family

  • 5 of 5

This is a large home that had enough room for all 7 of us plus our dog. In addition to the four bedrooms, the kitchen and living room are large gathering spaces, brightened by skylights. The home is comfortable and you can tell the owner lives there when he's not renting it out, but that didn't bother us at all--on the contrary, he left helpful notes about any potentially confusing aspects of life in his home (how to open the damper in the chimney, where to find extra blankets, etc.), and invited us to call if we needed more information. We recommend staying here if you have a large group and want a roomy, comfortable space. An additional plus is that the kitchen has everything you need to cook for your group.

Owner's Response: The best results for guest stays are communication with the home owner and this party was exceptionally good at this. Thank you for your stay.

Ski Sipapu- 4 families/friends

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful house with a gorgeous view of the mountains. It was spacious enough to allow four families to fit comfortably, come together as a group, and sleep in private quarters. The open kitchen dining area was conducive to our large group as well. Skylights, fireplace, wood burning stove, abundance of wood, cookware/spices, large yard, long covered porch, and jacuzzi were much enjoyed ammenities. It is clean with plenty of towels provided. This is not an empty rental, owners belongings and personal effects were around, so it felt more like we were staying with a relative. The owner was very helpful with our stay. It is very close to Taos and just ~30 min drive to the Sipapu Ski Resort. We would love to stay here again.

budget rental

  • 2 of 5

We usually stayed at rental house for our ski trip to NM and Colorado. This house is different than most rental house we stayed before. It appears that the owner still lives in the house, while most rental house we stayed before are vacation homes and professionally managed. There are a lot of personal items in the house. Most of closets or drawers are occupied. And the house is dated and we found spider webs in one of rooms. The layout of the house is good except only two bathrooms. If you are on a budget and have a big group, this house could be a good choice. But if you are used to staying at 3 star or above hotels, this house will not work for you.

Owner's Response: During the Holiday season most of my rentals are for budget minded families. Next time you are in Taos you might try booking with an agency, since it says in my information that this is an owner occupied house.

annual family reunion

  • 4 of 5

this is a composite review, so was downgraded a bit from my personal perspective. the owner was extremely accommodating, early check in, free access to all the facilities, very personable, etc. beds were very comfortable. place was the perfect mix of being secluded (very quiet and peaceful, at the end of a private road, so no traffic at all, and lots of room for parking and walking around outside) while being very close to all the shopping and amenities that taos has to offer. it was a good base camp location for fishing eagle nest lake, driving the high road, and urban activities. some in our party found the bathrooms a little hard to get to and a little congested in the morning with just two bathrooms. i would have given it 4.5 stars if that would have been possible.

We were disappointed

  • 2 of 5

There are several steps throughout the house and not very good lighting. I would not recommend this listing to anyone disabled. Only 2 bathrooms and the steps up to one bathroom are steep. The mats put out to give more traction slipped. There was no lid to pots and knives were dull. No steamer either. The description of house listed space for 15 but one of the sofa beds opened out to block one of the other beds and one was too small for anyone but a small child. The dirt road to the house had deep ruts and could be a problem with rain or snow if don't have 4 wheel drive.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry for your disappointment. Of all the dozen or so review that I have received in the four years since joining this site, I have had none that were so focused on the negative aspects of their experience. Especially since I spoke to this person for over an hour on the telephone and answered 5 emails all prior to arrival, but I did not receive any calls (tho my phone number is located throughout the house) during this stay. I could have told them where to find 7 lids to pots, and suggested a couple of the 14 knives that are available in the kitchen that are very sharp. Even night lights that are in the house to be used by people who don't want to have their sleep interrupted when there are numerous guests in the house. This house has 7 queen or full sized beds/sofa sleepers/futon beds and 6 foot couches for sleeping 15 people. It is not ideal but most of the people who travel in groups of 15 are looking for the economy of $10-15 per night per person accommodations not spacious places with room service. So, if you were to compare this review to the other 11 groups who listed this as 5 star I would just say that some people see the world through eyes that see the world as the glass BEING HALF EMPTY. (Note: no positive comments in this review.) PS Most of the travelers to Taos, NM are looking for something quaint and picturesque (like dirt roads and 20 acres of surrounding fields that are within 5 minutes of Wal-mart.) This town has a 900 year old Pueblo, not Disney World and the glitz of the city.

Sipapu Ski Area
Car: necessary

Taos Ski Valley is the premier ski area in the Southern Rockies and is located 45 minutes from this location. There are four other ski areas within the surrounding Sangre de Christo area (Red River, Angel Fire, Sipapu, and Ski Santa Fe.) In fact, Sipapu which is the smallest and most family friendly is only 15 minutes away via one of the most scenic roads in Northern New Mexico (Highway 518.). In summertime there are hiking trails within short distance. The Santa Fe National Forest is within walking distance of this property. Taos cultural events like art galleries, live theatre, museums (Kit Carson), and plaza based dances are all things that can be done under the wonderful blue skies. Many visitors come for the cool temperatures in summer (max 85 with very little humidity) or head to the even cooler temperatures as you go up onto the mountain peaks that surround the community. Eagle Nest lake and Abiquiu lake are both located within an hour of town. Rio Grande River is near. Lots of fresh powder in the winter months. Get your skis ready
